Hi peeps, since I finally got my bike I'm looking for easy-ish rides in North/north east London to start training (for lack of a better word). I live near Muswell hill which is not quite beginner friendly... so I'm looking for something a bit flatter which doesn't necessarily imply riding down kingsland road along all the lovely buses

Head down to Regents Park and do the inner ring road past the zoo etc...of course you got to up and down Highgate Hill...

i'm sure I can find an alternative route to Regents Park, maybe longer but flatter...

Personally I'd head north, and get to the other side of the North Circular. You can't be far from Trent Park, Chase farm etc?

If you can find roads to head north and get out of town that's got to be your best bet.
The only decent riding in London itself is at Richmond Park but you've got at least 25km of trudging across central London to get there. There's a 20min lap with a little climb, quiet roads, proper 'countryside'-style parkland and nice views of the London skyline.
Regent's Park will do as a fill-in, especially if you have to work right in the middle of town, but it's pretty crap riding just round and round, a 6min lap with traffic lights, junctions. Bored me to tears.
Hillingdon and Hog Hill are decent crit circuits with plenty of racing, even in the winter.
When I worked in London I usually waited until about 8.30, even 9pm before going out on the bike. The roads are bearable by then and you can train properly. Some awesome rides coming back from Richmond Park via Park Lane at nearly midnight! |

not too far from there. i'll have a look at how to get there avoiding wood green high road
Someone told me to try and ride along the A1000 (staying away from the M25, obviously.
anyway, thanks to everyone and keep them coming. every suggestion is more than welcome

Isnt there a dedicated road circuit that Britishcycling is developing for the Olympics ? Lea Valley park i think its called check out the website......Dave Cockram (BWiggos father in law is facilities manager for BC.....he should know.....hes an ex club mate of mine.

if I've googlemapped the right one i'd say it's about 25 miles away from me.
is it in Hertfordshire?

done it! really nice ride, due to lack of time didnìt really cycle through the park. just made it to cockfosters went a bit past the park and went back.
definitely worth doing it again (and maybe going a bit further!)

Go EAST young man to the Flat lands of Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.
Lots of quiet roads to be found in rural England with village Pubs.

I'm starting to think I should look around for a cycling club or something like that. I'm enjoying my rides but after a while on my own and with no music (no iPod, I want to hear the cars coming up from behind me) it starts getting boring.
I've also, finally, started to cycle to work. it does feel great! (apart from when I have to breathe busses' fumes in Angel...)
