The Mrs and myself were debating recently if Hugh Jackman was the poor man's Russell Crowe, or if Russell Crowe was the poor man's Hugh Jackman. It was a source of much hilarity to see them go head to head last night in Les Miserables on C4.

We're still no closer to an answer though Wink

Saw this today and could not resist sharing.

"A “philosopher-climber” took the stage victory and the lead of mountains classification at the Tour de l'Avenir Thursday, at the French-Italian border, in the ski resort of La Rosière. Indeed, Guillaume Martin, the Frenchman who is now second overall at three seconds behind Austria's Gregor Mühlberger, completed Masters in philosophy in June at Nanterre University, close to Paris. His subject of studies was, somehow a question of sport: the links between spirit and body in the work of Friedrich Nietzsche."

The Little Rowers made their debuts in the Yorkshire County Swimming Championship at the weekend. Competition was fierce (12 year old girls swimming 60 seconds for 100m freestyle Shocked) and the youngsters didn't trouble the podium, but it was a proud Mum and Dad up in the gallery all the same. Smile

The long course version of the Yorkshire swimming championships have taken place in recent weeks, with both Little Rowers in action. "Little" is definitely misleading; even by the standards of swimmers, they are definitely on the tall side of things.

Younger Little Rower was in action in 5 events, with a best result of 15th in the 50m breast stroke. Quite how the youngster performs at such a level is a mystery to everyone, as she has been in one of the lower groups in the squad training only half the time of most of the others. Due to dance commitments, she raced both days at the weekend with a hint of un-removed stage make-up on her face, before dancing in the evening with chorine in her hair. Smile

Elder sis, at the wrong end of the age range, was only in the 50m freestyle, but made her appearance count, dipping under 30 seconds for the first time and missing a spot in the final by 0.03s. Leading off the relay the next day, she went even faster, with a time that would have secured 5th place the day before, which was both pleasing and annoying. (More pleasing, it must be said.)

If that isn't enough "Proud Parenting" then Elder Little Rower is now faster over 50m freestyle long course than Rebecca Adlington ever was!

Be thankful I don't know how to upload videos...

More swimming news...

Younger Little Rower is now the North East Region 12 year old 100m Individual Medley champion.

Elder Little Rower couldn't quite match that but bagged 10th place amongst 14 year olds in the 50m freestyle.

I don't know why I've bothered caning myself over the years. Vicarious competition is much easier. And more successful!

Congrats, to them and MrsSR and you.
It seems natural to suggest that your self-flagellation is not entirely unconnected to their success.

You're too kind!

I think they have benefited from my fast-twitch DNA, but all other physical attributes surely come from Mrs SR.

I also like to think that I've demonstrated that to achieve anything meaningful - however modest - you need to work hard, with Mrs SR demonstrating that even if you're good, you still need to do do the "hard yards" to be able to dish out appropriate pain to your rivals.

The swim coach is progressively adding more endurance based training to the regime, with repeats on 200m and 400m featuring regularly. Elder Little Rower - naturally a sprinter rather than a stayer - is coming to appreciate that her decrepit Dad maybe isn't so decrepit as he does more repeats of longer work duration with less recovery on the turbo than they do for their hardest sets.

Looking at the state they're in after 200m races, I still think they have unexplored opportunities to "embrace the pain"...

Seriously, well done to your juniors SR.  I'm not sure I would ever want to run in to any of the rowers in ANY kind of competition, but I do enjoy your reports.  You should give workshops... Laughing

Thanks! But don't tempt me - writing reports after competing is quite challenging as you need to remember what happened. When watching, the detail is all too clear, with the potential for videos as well!

Certainly not Younger Little Rower or her Mother. These days I could probably be bribed with the offer of a pint!
