Mavic is recalling all of their R-SYS front wheels due to a problem with the carbon spokes.

Well I gotta pay my dealer a visit on monday morning. Waiting until march for the replacement is a bit of a pain. On the upside the free set of wheels is ok.

Well, more bad news about this wheel. Even the post-recalled version is trouble... story.

The whole wheel collapsed on the guy during a race.

I read the article and you can put my name on the list of people who will never ride carbon fiber spoked wheels.  I can't think of anything more frightening than having my front wheel disintegrate beneath me.

I have seen a rider julienne a gray squirrel that zigged into his front wheel with minor consequences (to the rider).  If he had been riding on a set of Mavic R-SYS the results probably would have been more akin to a Hezbollah teenager dashing into an Israeli cafe.

Plus Mavic sending out the "Find some fault with the cyclist" team seems rather stupid.

Mavic responds to the article...link

They are basically saying that something else caused the problem.

Of course they do.  Not like they are going to sell many of those if they say, "Yeah, there's a good chance of your R-SYS exploding right under you."

Nope, instead they're "gonna to put on the summer... the extra summer deputies as soon as possible. And then we're gonna try and use, uh,  shark spotters on the beach."

After many months of waiting I got my front wheel back recently, feels fine. Not seen many stories of the wheel spokes carcking smashing of breaking under the rider since.

"Preliminary Indication: A failed tire or a puncture could have caused the cyclist to instantly lose control of the bike, resulting in a crash event involving the subsequent breakage of the wheel."

Should I expect this type of failure if I crash after a puncture? I had one ona downhill last week.

Mavic wheels seem on the structural limit. I touched the back wheel of a companion on a run and his spoke broke. It seems impossible to fix a new spoke without sending back to the factory.
