Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
FPs are now open for what looks like quite a climby edition.

Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
and as usual with the dauphine, it is an early start tomorrow
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
And as usual in the Dauphine, (or ToS) Thomas de Gendt goes up the road to get his stage win.
Badly misjudged chase by Orica, given the sprinter teams were never interested. DD were never pulling them back alone.

UKES coverage is all over the place this week, what with the wall to wall tennis coverage.
Live today, then late for two days before live again.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
RAI were live for the last 35km yesterday (think there was a Juventus Cardiff post mortem going on that delayed the start of their coverage). Should be a reasonable back up for the week.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
Evening highlights on ITV 4 in case anyone hasn't spotted that yet. Some pre and post race interview in the mix. Contador says he has a weak team, so it's up to others to work.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
Has there been a new UCI rule banning calculators or something? Given it's the second time this week that they've gotten their sums wrong on the catch I do wonder . . .

Still always nice to see the break survive.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
4 - Try Porte please
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
It's getting to be nice entertaining trend, this breakaway malarkey  Very Happy

FDJ alone today, DD alone on stage 1.

I noticed that Katusha didn't make the usual effort.
Partly due to Kristoff's poor form perhaps, but I suspect also partly due to them being mugged in the past by the last 3kms only, Cofidis boys.
They never work in WT races, just the Coupe de France and so on.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
I wasn't watching cos days like today are drying paint days, but the reports I read did suggest Cofidis were working and stretching it out between 50km and 25km to go and then they left it to others after they had brought the gap down quite a bit?
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
Watching highlights on itv4 now, I just thought breakaway will succeed as they said today's stage is the most clear cut sprinters day Wink
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
Stage results:

1 Richie Porte (Aus) BMC Racing Team 0:28:07
2 Tony Martin (Ger) Katusha-Alpecin 0:00:12
3 Alejandro Valverde (Spa) Movistar Team 0:00:24
4 Stef Clement (Ned) Team LottoNl-Jumbo 0:00:28
5 Chad Haga (USA) Team Sunweb 0:00:32
6 Jasha Sütterlin (Ger) Movistar Team
7 Alberto Contador (Spa) Trek-Segafredo 0:00:35
8 Christopher Froome (GBr) Team Sky 0:00:37
9 Thomas De Gendt (Bel) Lotto Soudal 0:00:42
10 Brent Bookwalter (USA) BMC Racing Team 0:00:45

General classification after stage 4:

1 Thomas De Gendt (Bel) Lotto Soudal 13:05:53
2 Richie Porte (Aus) BMC Racing Team 0:00:27
3 Alejandro Valverde (Spa) Movistar Team 0:00:51
4 Stef Clement (Ned) Team LottoNl-Jumbo 0:00:55
5 Alberto Contador (Spa) Trek-Segafredo 0:01:02
6 Christopher Froome (GBr) Team Sky 0:01:04
7 Brent Bookwalter (USA) BMC Racing Team 0:01:12
8 Jesus Herrada (Spa) Movistar Team 0:01:15
9 Sam Oomen (Ned) Team Sunweb 0:01:17
10 Diego Ulissi (Ita) UAE Team Emirates 0:01:22

What was telling for me was that Porte, Valverde and Contador all put time into Froome in the second half of the trial, which had the main climb.

2017 starting to look a bit like 2014 for the out and out favourite for the Tour.
Maybe this year, it will be a battle, rather than a surrender.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
Well Froome's not been injured (AFAIK) like he was in 2014 so he's not had to chase form like he did that year. Too many distractions with new family situation? He maybe looked heavier than usual too?

I'm more than a bit astonished by Valverde. A tired Quintana and himself will be an odd couple come July.

Putting together the Suisse FP thread, I was struck by BMC bringing a big name team (home tour I guess), so went to check Porte's supporting cast. Doesn't look too bad.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
Well it certainly hasn't been the dominant Froome that we've been used to, and Porte is the one with the weight of expectations now.  Still, horses for courses - and I wouldn't be in a hurry to back against Froome in July.

Valverde is Iron Man... Wink

I've been wondering about froome's weight too.

But I'd agree with Gerry about come july
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
Yes, at the moment I would go with Froome too as he knows how to win it, but it looks like it won't be a coronation this year.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
The breakaway aren't going to make it, today.
Dylan van Baarle is last man standing, but FDJ, Katusha, Sunweb, Direct Energy and DD have all been working hard in the chase.
No, not Cofidis though. Wink  Laughing
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
Well well, Phil Bauhaus beats them all.
France get Demare 2nd, Coquard 3rd, Petit 4th and Bouhanni 5th.
Kristoff team bossed it, but he could only manage 6th.
Critérium du Dauphiné: Sun 4th June - Sun 11th June 2017
There is something curiously anti-zen about Bouhanni - he invariably follows the path of most resistance Wink

Nice pick Bio

Katusha management might be right about Kristoff, it looks like his bolt is shot...

That's what you get when you peak for the Tour of Oman.
