that was hard switch with the three races, dwars, milan san remo and catalunya. its hard not to focus towards one particular race.

Worse to come.

I just did two.
The Cobblestone Fantasy Cycling League
hehe, i had ciolek. didn't have cancellarra though.

damn good pick!

4 hours 18 minutes to the next team switch
The Cobblestone Fantasy Cycling League
hmm. it was about 1hr 12mins to go last swapsies when i changed ciolek for jeannesson. the lad had better go off on one like edet and dmartin have, or i'll be slightly ever so slightly miffed.

That was a pretty tough selection with the four races to think about.  After back & forth cross-checking on the available startlists, I ended up with what looks a pretty good team on the sidebar that will no doubt let me down spectacularly!

I get a bit less than happy and feel like I am not having much 'fun' at this time of year.  Took me ages to figure out who was riding and who I fancied for Tour of Catalonia and for some muddy semi-classic, E3 I guess.  then suddenly, while the Catalonia is still going, I have to ditch some of those guys to deal with Flanders and and P-R.  Which of course are not the only races going and I don't know how the points get awarded anyway.  Not exactly.  I would like it better if we had a "beginning of the seasons in foreign lands" team, followed by a "Paris Nice and TR team", then a muddy classics team, then the various small Tours, then the big ones.  This switching every week makes it hard to keep up, above all with exactly who is riding what races.  withdrawals, injuries, who is "just training" …  It is the time I really like Neal's game which is only the big Tours.

I played a game once, for one year, where you could change members of your team at will, within certain price limits.  But it is way more realistic to have a team and stick with it for a bit longer.

Still, I always say this and I always try to keep up.  And I always miss some deadline and fail to score points with my sprinters in a hilly race.  More likely I just make mediocre picks, as I seem to have done lately, dripping like a stone to fourth place out of five.  I really am aiming for second place and will be happy with third, but fourth is quite poor.  I am not good with one day races, over the years I have seen that.

My currently active team.  For a few days!!

Sagan Peter
Boasson Hagen Edvald
Cancellara Fabian
Phinney Taylor
Quintana Rojas Nairo Alexander
Gallopin Tony
Kelderman Wilco
Slagter Tom Jelte
Petacchi Alessandro
Vansummeren Johan
Hushovd Thor

They said that the picks you made for the Tour of Catalunya would remain in place for the whole of that tour, with your new team selection just being for the 4 new races.

The above is a nightmare, feels like hard work!  I use this site and made selecting for the races on now a little easier:

http://www.procyclingstats.com/

Your selection looks pretty good to me, good selection of Classic faves there.

My selection is now:

Sagan Peter
Froome Chris
Cancellara Fabian
Gesink Robert
Porte Richie
Pozzato Filippo
Wegmann Fabian
Gatto Oscar
Petacchi Alessandro
Ciolek Gerald
Thomas Geraint

Some i have no idea why i picked them but it's difficult to resist the temptation to just make up the numbers.

For example, I somehow missed that rule.  Left Quintana in, to cover myself, and I could have had someone else who is actually riding those classics.  Goss, for example.  Oh well.

Anyone know how you can find out exactly what points you got for a particular race or day in a longer race?  I thought I wold be doing a bit better having picked first and second for the E3, but maybe I am dreaming.
The Cobblestone Fantasy Cycling League
FF - Players results then filter by race.  You got 886 points for E3 but Nolte got a rather splendid 1414, which was even more than resbandit Maffy got (1342).  Your massive haul was fourth last out of 5 and the only person you beat for E3 was me.

And I'm shit. Wink

Thanks Gerry.  Now I can keep up.

I foolishly figured that since I did "well" picking first, second and change, then how could anyone do "better", relegating me to a distant fourth.  Foolish, arrogant guy that lurks beneath my modest surface!  I really am not really that good, what I would call mediocre,  at this team in a league thing.  Partly because I don't actually have a pal I can discuss things with.  I read quite a bit.  It all goes on in my head.  Not a single cyclist (or sports enthusiast) that I know around here would waste their time in a small group of unknown people competing to see who can pick winners in bike races (full of doped up cyclists, they would add).  I am convinced that if I had a pal I met for a coffee regularly, my strange version of professional cycling races would be better.  Instead I do this strange practice with four blokes, most likely I will never meet, who I would not recognise on the street.

Anyway, it is fun competing with you guys, but hard to keep it going all year.  One day I will make an announcement, "I retire, can't handle the pressure".  Still, we do what we can.  Am I an addict?

the points scale is http://cobblestone.be/index.php/rules/points/dayraces

e3 due to favouritism of the guy running the site scored double points Smile

Right, Nolte, got it printed out and posted above my puter.

Fortified by these tips, I am ready to rock.

i like johnd's cross-bernie picture. it'd been my desktop on the laptop for the last couple of years until i tried to chuck out an apple studio display 21crt that i accidentally tested and found that it worked again for half an hour yesterday.

it appears fearlessnolteshark is picking all the cast iron faves secretly, and doing rather well out of it. only hanging on by the skin of my earlygatto.

last thursday's current non-canc rule14 team:
Sagan Peter
Boasson Hagen Edvald
Chavanel Sylvain
Kristoff Alexander
Bennati Daniele
Turgot Sébastien
Bak Lars Ytting
Breschel Matti
Stybar Zdenek
Oss Daniel
Thomas Geraint

with boonen's crash, sylvchav may let up at dddp for later efforts. which was a badly canculcated risk, given the fact that faburama doesn't give a flying buffalo mozzarella about g-w. still, smugyounglaurent's still smiling on top for bit of a while longer.

dunno why you don't like this utterly bestiest time of year ff, even if it's snowing it's proper fascinating brilliant. i'll pop round for a ride and a cup of tea if i ever get down your way. probably complain about it being too hot anarl.
The Cobblestone Fantasy Cycling League
Its not that I don't like this time of year for cycling races  I love it for cycling races.

What I don't like is the constant team changes in this cycling game, and the fact that I don't really get how the system works.  I could try harder, but I grow seriously weary of new instructions for a new gadget or for a new game.  And it seems that I am constantly making a new team for a new set of races, including some I have never heard of and don't even care about.  I don't like it because the weather is not quite good enough for  fair weather cyclist like me, but I can sniff the spring in the air.

For the cycling races on TV, if I didn't have to pick a team, I love it.

I should probably just stop this game and concentrate on the other one, where you pick a team for the duration of a Grand Tour.  And just see how it works.

Current team.
Sagan Peter
Boasson Hagen Edvald
Cancellara Fabian
Phinney Taylor
Goss Matthew
Turgot Sébastien
Bozic Borut
Vanmarcke Sep
Petacchi Alessandro

I think it says alot for the strength of our little league that I got a podium (third) overall for Paris-Roubaix with 1172 points (no prizes for guessing who was fourth, it was indeed the mighty Maffy) and scored 960 points for RVV and can't even get off the bottom of our league!  I see that our runaway leader Maffy is 16th overall in Cobblestone so I really hope he can go on and do a Slapshot, and take the whole thing.

*I am however killing the boards.ie league in Velogames Very Happy
The Cobblestone Fantasy Cycling League
I knew you guys seem to score many points more than me, but I didn't realise that you both had done such a good job on the cobbles in the overall league.  Nice choices.

You will never beat Maffy, but I am quite sure you will lift off the bottom.  Oh.  That leaves me there.  Better score some points fast.
