After seeing the text commentary referring to "The riders take the high-speed 360 turn " I had grand visions of an amazing spiral loop construction and rapidly scrambled around for a route map and Google Earth.

But no, the idiot meant a simple U-turn. Sad

edit - actually it was somewhere in between - imagine them leaving a large roundabout at the same entrance that they entered it and you get the idea.

Good win for Gaviria who was scrapping for intermediate points as well.

I was having kittens when they were charging through those crowds, standing in the road.
A miracle that we didn't have a pile up.
Quite a lucky Giro in this respect so far.

Gaviria has raced of the rust and he's now looking the part.
Jakob Mareczko was absolutely flying over that final 100 metres.

I am still trying to unimagine Matt Stephens in a cargo shorts and black shoes combination talking up the finale in the finishing straight of Messina

Eurosport have dealt with it in detail today. A clear push and although partially obscured by tree foliage, Rosa ends up in the crowd, hitting a a spectator dressed in blue.
Fair enough ... I haven't had a chance to see that.  Was it at the beginning of today's coverage?

Yes.
They have that 20 minutes of general race chat before each stage now.
Devoted much of that time to this.

However, if you are looking for mitigating circumstances, here is the argument for the defence.

Most of the comments underneath have it right imo.

On that first point, how many with microphones have Eurosport working on the giro.

I've counted 8.

I've just had a quick 3 point weather check of stage beginning middle and end and it looks to be a 40-65kph crosswind, from the land side, all the way.
Could be total carnage with huge GC implications, or else they will all huddle together like sheep.

One of those comments refers to Moreno punching Rosa earlier. Then the footage of Rosa giving him a slap, then Moreno sending him into the crowd.
There might be a whole history of events between the two.
Perhaps it is the sinned against rather than the sinner that ultimately gets the severe punishment, or maybe they have it right.
As a football analogy Moreno's shove was more than just bumping foreheads, it was a full punch to the face.

At halfway a decent gap of 7' for a strong group of 5 riders.
Was over 8' at one point.

Code:
Mads Pedersen     (Trek-Segafredo)
Jasper Stuyven    (Trek-Segafredo)
Lukas Postlberger (Bora)
Simone Andreetta  (Bardiani-CSF)
Silvan Dillier    (BMC

Cannondale and Wilier Triestina slowly pegging it back.

50 km to go. Gap @ 5'

The sort of break that will stay away if they haven't already put too much effort into it.
Going to take at least two teams to bring it back.

Cor this is dull.
The lack of ambition from teams without a real GC contender is staggering.
Hatch trying hard to build tension when there isn't any.

Yep, day for an escape.  No team cares.

Gott be Stuyven eh?

There is always some excitement in seeing if the escape will survive and I always prefer it when they do.
10 km to go gap still over 2'.
Escapees (except Pedersen obviously) still not going full gas as Pedersen has been able to be dropped on the short climbs only to catch back up later.

Thanks Huw ... I'll take a look.  I'm not looking for a case for the defence, I was just surprised that what looked like a 50:50 in the original coverage appeared to have been handled so inequitably.  But there's no excuse for pushing someone off the road.  For sure Rosa does something in this latest clip but it looks fairly innocuous to me.  As others have said ... probably some spat that stated hours, days or weeks earlier.  Oh hum.

Dillier outsprints Stuyven.
Postlbereger 3rd.

Canondale finish 5th to justify their leading the chase all day.
Adam Yates gets the last SM points paying place.

That's what I said at the time.
The most exciting thing to happen all afternoon.

The thing about a breakaway win: it's exciting if there is doubt whether they will make it or not. Today, it was never in doubt.

Bart:
It's happened again today, as it does most days and was caught and shown by Rai with that zoom shot.
Omar Fraile had a bit of a swing at a Katusha rider. Little or no contact and a few harsh words.

I reckon the dqf was purely down to the fact that spectators were involved in the incident.

That was just a lot of cars. The guy waving them to parking place/run off at 400 metres seemed to have been in a panic to get them all through the opening before the main group got to it.

You should have worked more in the Leeds office. Violence was not only tolerated but positively encouraged!
