Etix 1-2 on the GC of a Grand Tour.
How they wish they could do that in a classic.

Zakarin not helped by the bloke flagging to get his attention in the final corner, but it was that sort of day: one to forget.

Not doubting Brambila's ITT pedigree ... I just thought he was well down with 10km to go.

A rest day summary of where CN thinks things are

http://www.cyclingnews.com/featur...alia-analysing-the-gc-contenders/

For me they've maybe elevated Landa a bit much given he didn't come across so steady on the other days, I'm still not sure exactly what's going on with Nibali as he hasn't convinced me 100% yet. Valverde seems the most solid so far and with Amador to play as a joker or act as a wingman he has the support the others seem to be lacking?

If I were rooting for Valverde I would be worried that he has peaked 2-3 weeks too early ... as it is I worry that Nibali may peak 2-3 weeks too late!! lol

Well, the bookies think Landa is in pole at the moment.  I wouldn't be so sure, mind...

I wouldn't be in a hurry to back against Nibali just yet, although it's fair to say his form doesn't look great.  Valverde looks good value @ 6/1

+1

Altho if there's anyone who can carry superb form over an entire 3 weeks without an off-day it's surely Piti.

I don't think Nibali is that far off his best (or put it differently - where he needs to be to win this Giro)... wrong tactic on stage 6 aside, he's followed the right moves so far, and kept out of trouble without having to stretch the legs too many times.

Landa's TT defies logic.. but it is a SKY marginal gain?? If he's been spending more than normal amount of time testing/training for timetrial improvements, will he still be the same force in the mountains??

Zakarin has that fortunate ability to follow moves in the mountains quite easily - despite being far back, he could quickly ride himself back into it without spending too much over next week. Someone like Chaves or Pozzovivo are now required to spark the race to climb the Top 10... i can see Zakarin following their moves while Nibs & Piti watch each other

Kruiswijk is in a great position too, but a bit untried in leadership role... in his breakout Giro where he top 10'ed it was in the foil role for ?Gesink? IIRC. Other times he's been climbing well it has been when a GC battle hasn't mattered. Curious to see if he can stay with the above names when it counts.

I was thinking last night it was a quiet rest day with no scandals or riders sent home and so on, and then this bizarre one comes along

Well, I thought it was the most blatant drafting I have seen, and
I couldn't believe he persevered with it for so long.  Hatch and Kelly didn't seem to make a whole lot of it though.

Pulled by his own team as punishment?  Crazy...

Well Landa is already 5 mins down on the stage so the bookies odds are missing a couple of zeros now.

The usual, very fast, post rest day mountain stage.
Started late, but is going to finish early.

Oh, dear, I'm becoming a KOD expert.  Zakarin in the ITT, and now Landa today!

Bob Jungels becomes Bob Mountains, while the rest continue to play footsie.
Neo pro, "Duracell" Ciccone hardly lost a second to them as a result.
The rest of the breakaway looked cream crackered.

Aw Gawd, you had Landa as well.
I seem to have the KOD touch as well, can't remeber who the other one was last week.

Terrific entertaining stage today I thought.
