Crumbs !
Nibali tries to attack to bridge to Fuglsang.
Fails.
Dumoulin attacks and off he goes.

I confess that I gave up and went out.
Awful stage design. Really starting to miss old Angelo.
Wellens wins from the breakaway.
Nibali must have no idea where his form is at the moment.
Dumoulin and Zakarin act, Pozzo latches (or leeches) on while the rest people watch.
All pretty meaningless in terms of the third week, but this Giro is already starting to look like a carbon copy of the 2012 debacle.

That was a bad attack by nibali, the rider he hurt most with that attack was himself

Good win for wellens

Nibs trying his form, or quickly finding out he's got nothing at the moment. Trying to find a positive - he might be not so tightly marked next time after this mega-fail.

Happens to me all the time.. a lull in the pace or there's a change in the front of the group and it slows down, in a spontaneous decision its a great chance to attack and get a quick gap.. but very often not sustainable and does more damage than good to your own chances.

Fuglsang up the road WAS a good Astana tactic though - he performed role of spoiler quite nicely for those waiting for the bonus seconds, and had Nibs reached him, a good launch pad for that attack to stick.

Probably Nibs should've waited and used his burst of adrenaline to follow Dudu instead of roll the dice... still long way to go.

Wiggins Tour win wasn't that bad was it Wink At least as a fellow TTer, Dumoulin is attacking everywhere for the seconds.

Nice win for Wellens and as a stage to see where the relative forms are I thought it was OK for week 1. There were seconds there to be picked off - probably better than there being minutes of differential?

Nibs soundbite is that he was following instructions to have a dig if he felt good, but it was wrong call because of headwind. So why did he follow through with doing it then??!! Very Happy numpty!

Yeah, I like the way TD is looking to take seconds where he can, rather than rely purely on the TT.  I think the Giro could take something from the 'classics' first week that the TDF has gone for in the last 3 or 4 years.  Tuesday's stage was great, but the first week hasn't been all that, really.

Big sprints are fine and dandy as a spectacle, and are (and should be) an integral part of GTs - but are probably best left to balmy July days with a sunflower background, non? Wink

Strung out in single file for 20kms followed by an over cluttered bunch sprint.
Flipping odd, stage.
At least it was over in short order.
Not finding this a particularly attractive Giro either.

It was designed to be like that (the stage).

Quote:
This is a sprinters’ stage, just like the one finishing in Benevento. The fastest riders will have to make it to the finish after clearing a few climbs in the first part of the route, across the province of L’Aquila, and the mountains in the province of Rieti. The route will grow faster and faster past Rieti, culminating in a final sprint in the city of the “Quintana” (a traditional jousting tournament).

Can't see tomorrow being that much different to earlier fare, we will have the GC teams setting the fast pace to try and drop the sprinters.

I quite liked the variety / randomness today. In first hour of racing a group of 50 were ahead thanks to Canondale riding hard and making echelons... They had over 2 mins at one point!

Feel a bit sorry for Kung - he had been in all the breaks today in some form or other and nearly held on until the sprinters teams got their act together. By no means easy run-in - disorder also created by folks like Kittel and Pozzato getting punctures in the final 5km

The loop around Arezzo features this Strade Bianche type climb so not much chance of sprinters. The gravel starts on the 14% section Smile

Bennati being interviewed on Italian TV about his tweet where nails were strewn across the sterrato section earlier.

did nibali have a similar quote 2 years ago when a rider was kicked of the tour
"the mother of the imbecile is always pregnant"

a quote in a novel "birth of a bridge" by maylis de kerangel
Quote:
astana, kazakhstan: the presidential palace unveiled three days earlier was a rplica of the white house. Diderot had delivered the work on time to the local dictator

i guess astana tactics are a bit like astana politics

I think it's the same Italian quote but the dodgy translation is mine. The without words bit is the #senzaparole hashtag.

The fun starts soon.

Total lack of ambition from a lot of this lead group.  Chavez saving himself for a 50m sprint at the top rather than put a shift in.
