idea:

Race read against a book on tape

you read a book while at the same time, you listen to the same book on tape. the idea to finish before the tape.

of course, the flaw here is abridged version. damn them to hell.

I'm not a big fan of Formula 1 Motor Racing but found this gem on the BBC website coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix today:

"There's a huge cheer for Kimi Raikkonen, with a lot of Finnish fans making the short trip to Hungary for this race."

According to Michelin route planner, the "short trip" from Helsinki to Budapest is 1,722 kms and takes 27 hours 16 minutes by car!

a thought when reading an article on legalisation of prostitution by the irish times economics editor.

he mentioned that the clients would pay Vat on the prostituition services. i assume its a service i.e.

my question is which of the service rates should it be 13.5% or 9%. 9% is used for tourist related activities although some crazy stuff is also in it (newspapers, cinema tickets, hairdressing as long as golf fees, hotels, restaurants etc etc)

so i'm thinking 9% would be more appropriate rate

I'm also reminded of a conversation with a work colleague after I started my first job and writing a letter to the revenue.

nolte: i have dear sir/madam at start of the letter
colleague: i think you only refer to prostitutes as madam.
nolte: never having met a prostitute, i wouldn't know that.

i saw an update in the news paper laqst week for revised deposit interest rates.

Bank of Ireland on their smartsaver deposit account are offering 0.01% on balances from €0 to €99,999.99 and 0.03% on balances above €100,000.

with such a rate offering an amazing €9.99 for deposits of €99,999.99, maybe the smart in the name of the account is threw people off.

Spoiler:

what actually happening is that people leave their savings in a product at a special rate, when the term of the products initial period expires, they either get stuck with a far lower rate or they should go to their bank and have the money moved to a new account

i am aware of this

something interesting. last june, i decided on a quota of female written books to buy and read of 25% so 1 in every 4 books i would buy would be written by females, as i found i didn't read alot of females.

the result of this quota, is that i have bought more than the 25% of the books from females since this.

november 2 females 3 males
december 3 females 4 males
february 3 females 3 males

just interesting.

a problem with a quota is tokenism but as i am buying more than the quota, this makes it non-tokenistic.

i did a good deed yesterday.

when i was doing the post, a person asked me directions to the bookmakers. i gave him directions to the gamblers anonymous meetings that take place in the parochial hall

Spoiler:

i am lying. i did give him the directions to the bookmakers. in fairness if in my town, you don't know were bookmakers are, you wouldn't have a gambling problem unless of course you aren't use to the  town

idea for april fools joke

- put your birth of date on facebook as 1st April and see how many people wish you a happy birthday because mark zuckerberg told them to do so. especially funny/horribly depressing if the person has gone out for your birthday and is at a very different time of year

----

one positive thing about google glasses - you won't get those people holding their phone up all during a gig to record it. now they can just stare straight on at the stage

------

advertising slogan for google glasses - pirating your favourite films straight from the cinema has never been easier.

my parents were looking at those house renovations shows which every second week is a church i think

it really seems to me to bring bad luck to a project when trying to renovated an old church. it always seems to be an over run.

or maybe it is bad luck to appear on those shows?

i have had this theory in the past also about a shop in my town which took over the old church, and any business that took it over has always failed

With the news of heavy snow in Northern New York State (Buffalo) and the reported Ice conditions throughout the USA. (even Hawaii we are led to believe)
So when it thaws it becomes water.

Did you know that for some time there is a severe Drought in South West USA which has made farms "Dust Bowls" and worst hit is California.
People in neighbouring States scoff at Californians for whinging and say that they have such a big coast line which they could use for desalination plants.
However another traveler says that the Golf courses and gardens are kept a lovely green.

I thought it was all due to agriculture demand rather than private consumers.
A lot of water is required to grow almonds, that sweet, small, hard nut (wonder how that compares to the Californian wine industry ?)
USA produces the majority of the almonds in the world Surprised and it exports most of its almonds to China.

So really they are exporting their water to China.

Just think what the trade deficit would be without it though.
