I reckon a good rule of thumb is get the deal with the 'best' frame and wheels you can afford as they are the most expensive to start upgrading.
If you're riding recreationally, why not get an audax or full tourer? The geometry will make the recreation a whole lot more enjoyable than a compact frame with yer knees up round your ears when you're in the drops I would have thought.
