Thanks Bartali,
I have been getting faster and better. I just don't have those quick bursts of speed. I'm working on it though. |

I went out with the fast group again today. I was able to stay with them the whole time on the way out, until we hit the hill. At that point, I stayed for about a half mile, then had to regulate my heart rate for the remaining 2.25 miles. I got up the hill around #10 to 12 out of a group of 20. I was quite pleased.
On the return, I was able to keep the gaps down too, and stay with the main group. We got separated on the last small hill, but I could stay with the third group. Gradually, our small group started engulfing other riders getting too tired to stay with the fastest group. We finally caught the led guys about a mile before our breaking point.
My average speed was 20.6mph this time. I'm improving! |

Finished in the top 1/3 in the Cat 4 cyclocross race yesterday. It was a mudfest Saturday with Jonathan Page taking the win (2nd at Worlds 2-3 years ago). Yesterday local boy Tim Johnson won, with drier conditions. Beautiful course. gearing up for Interbike Providence and three days of racing, back-to-back cross races and a road race on the holiday Monday. Five races, ten days, and the legs are feeling good after 2.
I'll try to post pics from Gloucester soon.
Did a local fundraising race last week and got third. We averaged 27.5 mph for about 45 miles, then slowed to 22 in the hills and wind. Finally able to ride with the faster guys in the club. Still losing weight. Down to 192 lbs at 6' 2". _________________ END THE MADNESS

Nice photos!
Looks as if Saturday's race was what cyclocross is all about -- a regular
Tour de Manure! |

I know i'm going to sound really daft and non-bike savvy now but how can you tell with all the mud? _________________ It is better to try to the utmost, fail and be visible rather than wait and hope |

More hope than know Spoo! Bit of a joke with Cape re Campag and cyclo cross. Cape's a recent convert to cross .... but I have a long-standing dislike of it.
Its the 'steps' in the spider (bit like an aztec pyramid) that make me think its not Campagnolo. Could be wrong though? |

aaaaaah I see, well I hope for your sake its not Campag, as a fine Italian gruppo like that should never be used for something as vulgar as Cross.
It should only be used aboard a fine hand-built Italian steed whilst climbing the majestic Italian Alps, clad entirely in White relying solely on 'feel' and 'panache' to get you there, no? _________________ It is better to try to the utmost, fail and be visible rather than wait and hope |

It's SRAM Red on a Stevens carbon frame. The best, Bartali! Unfortunately not my bike, but the bike of the former U.S. National Juniors 17-18 champion. _________________ END THE MADNESS

I certainly admire the people who do cyclecross and especially those that do so with skill.
I guess like Bartali though, I have something of a dislike for the sport. Although I know it is quite popular now in America with some racers and riders. Plus in europe some of the women, like Marianne Vos, do road and cross as well.
For me though, I'm much happier on the track with a fixed gear than in mud. That's just how I roll |
