Why I haven't tried one yet.

It's a shame, because it's such a cool jersey, but I have resisted buying one for the same reason! May as well have a target on your back every time the road heads even vaguely upwards! Often thought a green jersey would be a good choice as a pre-emptive strike - 'you may be dropping me on this hill, but if I catch you up at some point on the flat, I'll demonstrate my expert wheel-sucking, then you'll be sorry'
CapeRoadie

Think this one would make you a target?

CapeRoadie

Here's the new one:

kellyrocheearly

i have the 1996 Mapei Jersey and 1974 Molteni Jersey
Plus i have my old club jersey from Ireland and i quite lilke my new club jersey here as its a nice blue & white design with the Boston skyline across it.
I used to have a KAS, PDM and Cafe de Columbia jerseys but they all got too old or too small for me

Like the Green jersey idea! The mountains jersey was a present for my 40th birthday. I was really flattered that my freinds thought I was a decent climber (which they do), but terrified to wear it in public.

Yep! Shirts you can take or leave, but when your but is sitting on a 69g slither of carbon fibre for several hours you need the best shorts going. Assos are the best I've tried by a country mile.

BARTALI -- I made that jersey for training for the Best Buddies Challenge ride that I am doing to raise funds for Best Buddies. Although I cannot wear it on the ride, I have worn it to motivate me for this ride.

I thought I was doing a good job fund raising until I read a read a report from RAAM (Race Across America) where the Lon Haldiman Award went to someone I know here in Arizona. He and his team raised over $600,000 for their appointed charity. Now that is some fund raising Shocked

Can anyone recommend socks, gloves, jacket, hat for under helmet for really cold weather. I'm talking -2C/25-30F with wind chill on top of that.
Gonna experience my first full winter in that kinda cold so want to be prepared.
I got away with layers last February/March on a few real cold days but my gloves & socks were not good enough

KRE, you'll find more advice than I can give you here:

But if I were you I'd go for overshoes rather than waterproof socks.

KRE - I have the Assos AirJack 851 which is good for zero degrees - and its a great bit of kit. However, the Fugujack is good for -6 to +6.

Dude, that shit's way overpriced! I'd take a Mountain Hardware or ArcTeryx climbing jacket over that any day. MH makes one with a rear zip for cycling.

Cape

Each to their own and all that, but I think SSLs and Carbon rims are pretty pricey too Laughing
kellyrocheearly

unfortunately we all have an expensive hobby!
For winter training i need to get new brake blocks and tyres for the training bike plus hat, gloves, jacket & socks. Not to mention the 3 or 4 books i want for winter reading.
Then i'm saving for a new set of wheel for the racing bike next spring.....it never ends
Boogerd_Fan

Expensive indeed, as the government here just made helmets compulsory from Jan 1st.. i need to update my model... however, maybe that lady i just headbutted is quite glad i was riding without today Smile

At the risk of incurring the wrath of Sooty .... I was talking to a bloke at work today who played golf at wentworth at the w/e. Think he said 285 for a round!!! That's about 4 hours of game time!!

Now that's expensive! scratch

Friend of a friend has his blood type and contact details stencilled on his helmet.

Am wondering if that is being sensible or overly pessimistic. Does anyone else do that?
Boogerd_Fan

My previous model also came with that type of sticker pack... although to put those details on the inside of the helmet is a bit irrelevant, when one of the things i wouldn't want to do after a serious crash would be remove my helmet. Never mind someone else doing so, to find my details.

nah you need a bit of cold and rain to toughen you up for the racing season

but if you can pedal through this ungodly heat (ever seen dried out shoe leather? talk about tough), a bit of wet and cold is nirvana like Wink

I don't usually buy team jerseys. I've mainly purchased plain ones from pearl or bought ones from rides I've done. I usually look for sales, and buy good quality and at a low price. I've come to the conclusion that I want colors that help we stand out. I've nearly been hit a couple of times, so I thought it would help.

I broke down this year and purchased two Tour of California jerseys. The climber and leader ones. They are bright and don't seem to ignite the same type of trouble I could get with an official yellow or polka dot of the TdF.

A week ago, I noticed a sale on Rabobank jerseys. I decided to buy that and the bib shorts because I felt that the outfit stands out. I put it on today for the first time during my lunch break and walked out to my bike. I've been riding from this office for over a year, and I got my first comment on an outfit today. She said, "You look bright today".
forza_petacchi

I got a kit (shorts + jersey) from some small semi-pro team that a friend of my parents' is on. The shorts have a super-nice Girodana chamois. Very Happy It makes a huge difference. (Oh and got = for free Very Happy )

Wheel update:

btw, forza, they are Neuvation C-50 wheels and the rims are made for Zipp by the same company.

The creaking and flexing sound was a result of thin bladed spokes and NTG (not-too-good) hubs. I am having the wheels rebuilt (in the Land of Mordor--they will be evil) with DT Swiss hubs (hi headwind) and round spokes which won't flex under my heavy poundage (210 currently).

Total cost: $500.

Getting closer tot he Zipp prices but still less. Plus, my wheels will be better than the equivalent Zipps.

Any good sites for buying jersyes. The selection in the shops here is nothing short of crap. I mean some reliable and reasonably priced sites.
I got Credit Agricole, T Mobile, a few ordinary blue red etc ones (pearl izumi, and I can't think of the other company name but its Italian.) and a TDF 07 yellow which I've never worn, not been brave enough. But I will some day.
Bartali

paperman wrote:

Strange that. I have a polka dot that I don't dare wear ... but I wear my maglia rosa's all the time. Never really thought about it until I read your post. Strange world!
berck

I don't think the TdF leaders jersey is a big deal. There are many yellow jerseys and most people won't notice you have the right one until they com up on you. Now, the polka dot jersey can be seen for miles, and every decent rider knows what it means Wink
paperman

I've seen people out wearing the polka dot, to be honest a drag i.e a tiny bit of an uprising on the road would present a challenge to them. Being passed on a climb would not be an issue. But each to their own. My attitude is if you want to wear it, wear it. Any one who laughs or pokes fun its their problem, not yours. Its just I'm not sure of wearing my yellow jersey out. Ohhh how's Lance Armstrong today?? Ha ha etc etc.... I can hear the neighbours already. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Veloclothes.com : you might have to wait until February for the sales on this year's gear, but they have a few Unibet and Lanbouwkreit (sp?) jerseys from last season for <$60 A friend got a 2006 Credit Agricole jersey for $50 in June. I'm hoping they'll put the Milram jerseys on sale before Christmas.

Hi,

First post here. Paperman, try this site:

http://www.prendas.co.uk/

They have some pretty reasonable (and very cool retro) stuff.

I'm currently on the St Raphael jersey - awesome!

http://www.prendas.co.uk/details.asp?typ=tea&fkid=27&ID=1220
redster73

I've seen the Prendas site as well. Can't seem to shift the Sinkewitz jerseys but like the retro stuff
T-Mob kit
QuickStep white world champ jersey (Asian repro piece of shit but nice and bright)
Just picked up Lotto shirt for a tenner of eBay
Various Endura jerseys
Endura bibs

Giro Pneumo

Sidi genius

Condor and a steel Cougar (lotto win gets me a cervelo)

I wear only bright shirts so a TDF yellow would suit. But would look terrible in a skinsuit!
paperman

I'll be getting a few bits from prendas, thanks. Cheaper than the rip off in cycling shops here.

I do around 6 miles daily so couldn't wear a proper jersey without feeling like an idiot, so compromise with this http://www.prendas.co.uk/view-pic.asp?ID=988 Smile
paperman

I never wear my proper jerseys going to work. I look like one of those inner city couriers on my commute to and from the daily grind.
prendas site has some nice stuff.
redster73

I'm with you paperman just wear plain jerseys for commute. It's no good donning my Quickstep rainbow jersey for some sod on a Brompton to fly by me!

eBay's a pretty good source for old jerseys although I can't get over how much people pay for Rapha Condor kit and people who by used bibs!
Bartali

Do a google search on 'convicts of the road' - some great old continental jersey's and at a good price.

Like Red - I draw the line at used Bibs!
redster73

Now you've done it, they're an eBay shop so were all be bidding against each other whilst Mr Convict rubs his hands with glee! Very Happy
