Pretty amazed Renshaw is only a reserve - I thought the course might have suited him!
Sagan for me. His nous to get in the right wheels in the last few Km, means that it doesnt matter so much that he's only joined by the Velits brothers in Team Slovakia.
At least, thats who i'll be routing for

Ickle diddums got a sore tooth and might not make the worlds...no loss there then!!
Slow healing from tooth operation causes problems
Having been forced to miss the Canadian WorldTour races because of a necessary operation on his wisdom tooth, Andy Schleck is facing further disruption to his racing schedule. He was due to return to action in today’s GP de Wallonie, but will miss this race plus two more events planned for this week.
“Andy won’t yet return to racing because of the operation of the wisdom tooth,” Leopard Trek spokesman Tim Vanderjeugd told VeloNation this morning. “The healing is going slower than expected and his training schedule has been disturbed because of this.
“He will not do the GP de la Somme and the GP Isbergues either [on Friday and Sunday – ed.]. Fränk is doing all these races.”
Last month the UCI released the qualification details for the world championships and, under that, Luxembourg was deemed entitled to start six riders. Despite a largely flat course for this year’s worlds, both Schlecks were working towards that target, with these late-season races acting as a mechanism to build form for Copenhagen and Lombardy.
Schleck’s cancelling of five events [the Canadian races plus this week’s contests] makes his preparation more difficult. Vanderjeugd said that it remains to be seen if the rider will compete in Denmark.
“If the healing picks up, Andy should be ready for the worlds. But this is not certain,” he explained.

So out of curiosity is there a cut off between junior and U23, or is it just about stepping up when ready?
I thought I had found a gap in the FP market for Phinney in the U23 ITT, but seems like he's not on start list. Going for the Elite instead?

Professionals are restricted to Elite races, regardless of age.

So, who is Eleanor Barker, who has just won a silver for GB in Women Junior TT?

Blimey, there's been some very inexperienced stuff happening at the start of this blokes U23 ITT.

Just been looking at the start times for this afternoon. They're really stretching the day out - seems a bit odd in that it gives the weather more chance to make a lottery of it.

Hepburn was going like a train.
Over cooks one corner, then repeats the error and comes down.
90 seconds between riders seems about right to me.
A lot of riders in this field.

If I read it right, there seem to be 4 half hour breaks which was what I was a bit surprised about.
I only ever recall big breaks like that on mountain ITTs when support vehicles are getting 'trapped' at the top, but I don't usually pay a lot of attention to this things so maybe it's more normal than I thought?

Harmon gave the "breaks" as 7 minutes. It is going on a bit, though.
Still, it's better than nowt and I'm more or less stuck in and the weather is foul (not as bad as Prato, yesterday, though)
Miffed over Elinor B earlier, cos she's from Cerdiff and was going to ride for Abergavenny ladies at one point.
Couldn't KOD her, so I messed up on both 1 and 2.

I can imagine it's gutting. Lunchtime reading made me realise she was Welsh lass and there was only a 3 second spread on the podium this morning
CN claim 32 minute breaks for this afternoon.

Durbridge's figure from the "reliable" source of the CN forum.
49.4kph and 456 watts.........................

Hepburn obviously did very well considering he went down, should have really been an Aussie 1-2 but nice to see a home boy get silver

Well that's the last time I FP someone on the basis of an amusing sounding name. Australia continue being the team to stuck the pin in when the Ouija board fails.

TT has started. Roads are wet, and commentators say no-one will get a dry ride today.

I guess Mr Zignoli bought his own ticket? Not the most athletic specimen
Take out Martin - either because he's doped or simply just miles ahead - and there was a cracking race between Wiggo, Grabsch and Cancellara who went for different pacing strategies.
The race had everything - an IP by Bobridge, who obviously forgot that there was an extra 40k today and a sprint finsih between Bobridge and Brajkovic.
The King is dead but that's been on the cards for about two years now. We await young Durbridge to put it up to Martin
I was quite struck by the Phinney/Talansky duo too, also quite young for the USA. Both still kids, but ready to move up.
When you have been around for a few decades, the transitions become no big deal, so much a part of life's rich pageant. Love watching the young guys move up.
HuwB
Had to play catch up.
Wiggo the biggest surprise.
Canc got ragged and it cost a packet.
Martin is just on another level.
I'd have thought a pan-flat course would be ideal for him and he was a similar time behind Martin as he was in the Vuelta. In fact, one might have expected Wiggo to do relatively better here as Martin was coasting other than the TTs in the Vuelta whereas Wiggo was riding for the GC and was presumably less rested than Martin.
Cancellara might have been expected to do better, but he's not been his usual self this season so Wiggo beating him isn't a real surprise.
Well, I wasn't expecting it. Thought he might be a bit tired.
3rd ITT in a row that Brad had beaten Fab, so, not surprising, then
Fastest ever World ITT by Martin.
Well, I wasn't expecting it. Thought he might be a bit tired.
I was hoping for a strong performance from Wiggo today rather than expecting it. I guess it's only really unsurprising after the event. Mind you, him doing badly wouldn't have been a surprise either, in which case I'd have said he was tired after the Vuelta.

I do get quite cross these days when I see someone I'm 99% sure is doping win.

a really stylish and classy ITT from bradley.
as has been said tho, tony martin on a different level.
really enjoyed it. looking forward to sunday.

Now just because I pick someone for the Junior Women doesn't mean she has to go on a suicide mission halfway through the race!
Lucy Garner is from Leicester, but apparently rides for Maindy Flyers junior club, who now have a gold and silver worlds medal, if true!
(I thought she rode form Leicester ladies)

It has turned into quite a medal fest for GB (or should that be Wales? ) with at least one more to come? Well done

Sheeeyit, my French lass got the chocolate medal. I think there should be points for fourth place i the worlds.

No, wrong info.
I checked with the family. Junior/u23 is a pretty close knit affair.
Amy Roberts is the other Cardiff girl and LG does ride for Leicester ladies.
However, this afternoon, we do have the brother of the ToB, Caerphilly Mountain Santa riding, Luke Rowe.

So looking at the results there were about 40 in a bunch sprint? Is it the same finish for the rest of the week now - i.e. the mildly uphill finish that every pundit keeps talking about?
kathy
Yes, it's the same finish but the senior course is a bit longer.
Take out Martin - either because he's doped or simply just miles ahead -
Just another East German meat grinder.
Micky mouse course that catches out one of the best bike handlers in the sport but in 4th place is the other ageing meat grinder who slows on the corners and is able to get his huge gear up tp speed, to be less than 16 seconds slower than the silver medal or 11 seconds from the bronze.
Yes and it's a gold fp, too.
GB get another medal, so all very good.
That was Becky's best friend's boyfriend's brother on Team GB leadout.

Maybe it is because I got the winner, but I don't think so. That last lap was way more interesting, somehow, than the usual mass sprint. Maybe that there were small teams. Maybe that you could see the strategies unfolding. Maybe because there were not two or three trains dominating. I don't know exactly why, but it seemed a pretty fascinating last lap to me.

Anyone else enjoy it?
I have enjoyed both today's finale far more than the average bunch sprint run in.
However, given this course, there is an air of inevitability over these outcomes. Simply not selective.
Some nice properties appear to have been put into lockdown for this weekend!
Fontfroide
Yes indeed. The end does seem to be rather easy to foretell. To be honest, I don't know why they pick courses like this. Next thing will be a course in Qatar. Not even suburbs there, just desert. It should be a rule that there MUST be a decent hill or two in every world's course. Among other things it seems it might be quite dangerous. A peloton of a hundred and forty barreling down the last few K. Not good. Even if there are sprint finishes that are more or less interesting.
Mrs John Murphy
The point is that having it in Qatar helps 'globalise' the sport. While having a finish that favours certain riders prevents you ending up with a Romāns Vainšteins as world champion.
Fix the races so the money riders win.
Fontfroide
I didn't think Qatar was so much about fixing certain riders to win, but all in all, footie for example, they just buy whatever event they wish, or whatever team they wish. Qatar, a country run by the same family for 150 years, is just a moneybags place. Brutal capitalism married to medieval family politics. They don't even HAVE football stadiums and they got the World Cup. Cycling is small potatoes compared to that.
gerry12ie
Great espoir race, they just went at it for the last 50k. There doesn't seem to be anything in the course to suggest that there will be anything other than a bunch sprint on Sunday, so will the GB train be good enough to hold off allcomers?

I really don't see how this is going to be anything other than a Frodo-fest.
You have to wonder if the other teams over-estimated the difficulty of the course.
The French will be delighted to at last hope they have several young stars who might bring home a bit of bacon. I am happy for my neighbours, even if the rugby team seems a little less than towering.

I shall think of a young man wearing a chef's hat on a bike! There do seem to be a lot of young French hopefuls - let's hope some of the manage to convert to a good pro career. They have just been interviewing one of the young Spanish hopefuls who rode this morning - he sounded pretty well- balanced. I think it was Victor Martin. He said that even if he makes it to the pro ranks, he appreciates that his career will be over by the time he's about 34. And in this day and age, you need something to fall back on. So as well as his cycling, he is contuing with his studies.
Is it my imagination, or are 'different' people taking up cycling now? It was traditionally the realm of the young uneducated peasant trying to make a name for himself, but now there seem to be intelligent young people from better-off families taking up the sport.
I'm rambling a bit - the women's race hasn't woken up yet!
Biosphere
Mrs. and myself wondering who the female guest in the RAI studio is. Weathered look suggests ex cyclist? Any ideas?
