Women's World Cup

It's been pretty hard to watch so far....Anybody notice the North Koreans all had the same haircut? Now, that's unity! Smile I wonder if Kim Jung Il rented out some more Chinese to pose as fans???

For what its worth I think the gap is rapidly closing between the top 3 teams and the rest of the world.

Anybody watching?

I've got better boobs than 90% of the women in the World Cup... Shocked

Looks like the English women have learned a few things from Rooney, Lampard and Co....Smile

Oh dear, and I thought this might have been a serious thread about the Women's World Cup, which I have been vaguely watching Twisted Evil

i'm disappointed. I was looking at eurosport time schedules and this is interfering with their highlights of tour de france stages on evenings. some nights next week i will have to stay up until 11:20pm Crying or Very sad

i'm feeling blue. anyone know of a group for blue men? brilsmurf

I'll probably take some flak from the women on this site, but I have a serious question about women's skill level in this World Cup.

I've noticed that while the tactics of the women seem to be the same as men and the keepers seem to be improving over the pathetic showing 4 years ago in China...I couldn't help but notice that the "first touch" of the women (generalizing) often seems to be the biggest problem that creates numerous turnovers and lost scoring chances.

I honestly don't notice the first touch being such a big problem in the men's game.  Some differences such as size, strength and speed are to be expected but I can't seem to grasp why the "touch" would be such an issue...that seems like an aquired skill and not down to gender....

Anybody care to offer any opinions on this?

At first I thought it was maybe just a matter of women not playing as long as men, but in actuality the women have been playing at least 20 years in most nations if not longer.

if the keepers have improved then 4 years go mustve been shocking. no positional play, flapping at everything, no hopers!!! Thats from what ive seen this week!

At what level? I've seen plenty of players with the first touch of a brick wall.

I'm talking the World Class levels...Why should women be any worse than the men in something like touch and feel???

The Japs beat the Germans in an original axis of evil match that went 120 minutes. Good game, great result for Japanese...German fans stunned but they clearly weren't as good as they've been in the last two world cups.

Winner of the USA/Brazil match will now be favored but nobody seems dominant.

two North Korean ladies provide the second and third positive tests of the tournament on friday after a Colombian goal keeper tested positive.

aparently after the positive tests and the final game against Colombia, the whole team were tested http://www.fifa.com/womensworldcu...n/media/newsid=1470844/index.html

I'm no expert on soccer/football, but I like the result of the USA v Brazil match today.  Maybe it wasn't the best show of skills, but the Americans kept at it for every minute of the game. I hope they can settle down for the semis on Wednesday.
smarauder68

Probably the most entertaining womens match I've ever witnessed...great drama...
SAP

I agree smarauder68.

I thought it was a well established fact that PEDs were of no benefit use at all in a skill based game like football.   Rolling Eyes  Rolling Eyes

Nobody mentioning the England v France match??????

England had it for the taking - and then blew it by letting in a late minute goal, failing to deliver in extra time, England looked knackered and totally wiping out on penalties. It was such a shame for them  - what is it they say - snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Please English Women's team - don't try and emulate the England Men's squad.

Foe some strange reason, as a Scot, I'm quite happy supporting the England Women's Team, but when it comes to supporting England's Men's Team, well, don't even get me started.......

I saw the England v France game and wasn't surprised the French equalized when they did...They were dominating the game, but England were unlucky to concede so late.

Kinda funny that the manager called her players "Cowards" -- I can't believe she asked for volunteers...lol...Seems very ameturish...

Japan vs USA in 1 hour from Frankfurt...

I'm expecting a 0-0 game and plenty of drama...I reckon the USA will win this in Penalties...

3 more positives from the testing opf the whole squad http://www.fifa.com/womensworldcu...n/media/newsid=1475877/index.html

What's OPF?
kathy

Japan have just beaten the USA in the final on penalties.
SAP

Excellent game.  The Japanese came back twice and did an great job on the penalty kicks.  The US had plenty of chances, especially in the first half,  and missed every time.

Funny discussion on American sports talk radio regarding possible alternatives to Penalties for deciding games still drawn after 120 minutes.

Among the best:

Corners...Each team gets 5 corners and the play isn't considered cleared until the defensive team sends the ball out past the midfield stripe....that could go on for hours...lol

Free Kicks(no wall or defenders): Starting at 30m and getting closer in increments of 5, until needing PK's.

Removing 1 player for every 10 minutes of extra time...Eventually you could have 6 on 6 deciding it if nobody scores.

Which would you opt for?

Extra time should start 11 on 11, with one player withdrawn every three minutes. First to score wins. When it's 1 on 1, keep playing until someone scores. If it got to 1 on 1, the winner would be the fittest, if not the best which feels better than the slightly random aspect to a penalty shootout.

within 24 hours 3 inferior teams disposed of more talented teams in FIFA tournaments....Uruguay beat Argentina, Paraguay beat Brazil and Japan women beat the USA...Pretty odd to see that within a 24 hour period.

I think every 3 minutes would be kinda odd...how about every 15 minutes? I reckon most games wouldn't last long at 9 on 9 or 8 on 8.

I have the same attention-span for footy as I do for cycling!

15 minutes could result in 2.5 hrs of extra time before we had the two goalies slugging it out.

There's no way it would get to that...Maybe 7 on 7 if you eliminated a player every 15 min....
