Winter Photos

Now that spring appears to be slowly edging it's way towards us....any good winter images from anyone??

Starter for ten...

Even a face in there if you look

Where were the photos taken Cadence?

Been mucking round with some photos (snow's a pain in the *** to expose properly) from the last few months (which were coincidently taken not too far from Romandie) and was reminded of this thread.

And in the spirit of a Farmer's market, here's something local and seasonal

Banff National park Canada, Salzburg Austria, Budapest and the Coast of California.  Banff has some tremendous scenery, the coast of California, namely Big Sur, is also fantastic…..the California photos were taken during a February storm….you can see the sand blowing like dust across the beach.

Anyone got anything good from this year?

Main reason for posting was I came across this and thought it was pretty cool.

Move the photo stuff over here, but before I go off topic

Can a beach in December be classed as a winter photo?

At least this is less ambiguous

Did you use the full machine-gun 8fps, or will I get away with my meagre 4fps? I'm a bit bolloxed on the AF selection though, only have a paltry 9 AF points..... Rolling Eyes  Rolling Eyes

Full Gun?? no need, I've only ever used the 8fps at air shows or on rally stages and even then never really needed it, even motorcycle racing is only on slow speed.

I was told at a very early stage by the guy who is easily the best trials photographer on the planet that burst or your fastest transit was only used by snapper who were not confident in getting the shot, the theory being you'll never miss anything.

The other huge limitation with this mode is the write speed of the modern cameras, if you shoot raw, which I tend to do, the camera buffer can only handle about 1 seconds worth of shots at full speed therefore you risk missing more than you would by trying to frame your shots.....unless you're using PRO level cameras, Canon Eos 1D or Nikon D3 of course...

TNG. I was in high speed mode, but I shoot in bursts of 3 or 4 rather than filling buffer. An uphill cyclist won't be that fast so you'll be fine with a measly 6fps Wink

9 AF points are fine too IMO. All of yours are crossed on the 40D so they're reliable. I think the bigger thing is to use the bright and contrasty helmet as the focus target rather than the face. Just make sure you've got the DOF. I over exposed by a 1/3 as well to lift the shadows on the face a bit. The other thing was I was trying to keep the shutter speed above 1/640, which was fine when it was sunny, but trickier when it was cloudy and I was also looking to overexpose. Shot wide open at ISO 640 and that was pretty good (when it was sunny it was no problem to break 1/1000 at ISO 100 and f/4.

SS. I find the full gun can be very useful. When kids are giggling away, it's amazing how quickly they change expression. I use it a lot, but I do wait for the right moment before I fire off a burst. I also think that Canon wouldn't have brought out a 1.3 crop pretty much for the reason of fps for the pros if there wasn't a need for it. Agreed for an uphill cyclist it's overkill, or probably any event where the competitor is following a trajectory that's obvious in advance.

For other sports though there's a big speed difference between 8fps and 4fps, which is the choice I have. This is my cousin at 8fps. That ball is moving quickly Very Happy

A bit flary as it's into the sun, but you get the idea.

Thanks, Bio. Useful information, much appreciated.

The dilemma is which body to use....in theory I kept the 40D because it was going to be more suited to this kind of photography, but I really like the 5D2!  Rolling Eyes

Expect I'll end up taking both (plus my son to carry the bag!)....wondering if anybody would notice if the 40D somehow got swapped out for a 7D later this year?  Very Happy

One of my favorite sites. None of the photos are mine.
Though, I have visited most of these places.

We still have much snow on the ground and temps that are below
zero (both Celsius/Fahrenheit).

Enjoy!

Is Mrs TNG that gullible mate?? Of course she'll notice!!

The 5 should be enough for cycling and it is that good bit better than the 40

Especially if Canon refresh a two year old model a month after you upgrade and you're then moping around the house with a bad dose of buyers remorse  Wink

I liked them all Smile Especially the PDM Chrome Cassettes caps!

Tis a bit weird you revived this thread today, as yesterday we went up the mountain with the frozen waterfall I posted above for the first time since then!

Yesterdays effort - bit blurry as I'm hanging the camera out of a moving gondola and not much light approaching 5pm in the evening.
