Windows 8

Was wondering if anyone has tried Windows 8. The massive discount (off the top of my head I think prices are going up by 500%) is ending on Jan 31 so I was considering at least buying a license before then and wait to see what the anticipated servicepack brought before actually upgrading.

I've played with it a shop for 5 mins and wasn't that impressed with the interface in that limited period, but then I read that 3rd party add ons like classic shell can sort that. Anyone tried it. Does it eventually hang together OK without having the touch interface that it's designed for (quite why I would want to cover my nice 24" desktop monitor with finger grease is beyond me).

People say you get used to it, but that doesn't sound like an endorsement and I'm hesitant as I still don't like the ribbon in the office suite and it certainly hasn't improved my productivity.

The Idiot Son hates it, he wants to retro 7 on his machine but he's kind of limited in how he does it.

He hates the interface because there's nothing intuitive about it. The one I set up for some older folk my wife knows would back that up, I couldn't get to grips with it at all and did my best to set it up such that it looked like what we know, Its not good!!

I'm avoiding it. I have to use Win7 for work, and they aren't doing any upgrades for a while. Otherwise, my default systems are now Linux, Mac OS X and mobile devices (Android and iOS).

Re: Windows 8

Not much interest here, only just got the missus off XP, even that was only because her laptop died so she pinched mine....but I refused to downgrade it to XP! So on past performance it'll be another 10 years before she'll consider more change.

Will probably buy a copy though....at 14.99 for the pro version it would be silly not to.

Couldn't agree more! Not going to smear my pair of 24 inch wide-gamut monitors, besides which how uncomfortable would that be trying to keep the arm stretched out horizontally at shoulder height while trying to navigate around the system. I've got enough aches and pains without adding to them by doing that!

Touch on a tablet is great, but can't somehow see it on a proper desktop monitor.

I think it's 24.99 for the pro version, unless you've very recently bought a Win 7 machine (or maybe license?).

I suppose I will probably buy a cheap copy now in the hope that they listen to all the complaints and the service pack lets desktops be desktops. The annoying thing is that under the hood, it's supposed to be a big improvement . . .  Rolling Eyes

I get the impression there is a push for a generic software package in Windows 8, something that'll do everything on every machine. I don't want my tablet to do the same stuff as my laptop or the house desktop, certainly don't want my daughters' greasy fingerprints all over screens!!

Upgraded son's Desktop last year, so qualify for the 14.99 special. Just got to go looking for his Win7 product key... Rolling Eyes
