When the pedals stopYesterday evening I had just crested a small hill, meaning I wasn't cranking very fast (ha ha), when my pedals seized completely! I think I would have hurt myself, and probably crashed too, if I was going faster.
One of the bolts holding on my granny ring came halfway out, somehow it did it very suddenly, and was sticking out far enough to smash into the frame on the upswing and stopped me in my tracks. The ring is twisted beyond repair I assume. A bit un-nerving as I didn't have an allen wrench to check to see if all the other bolts were snug.
I was 6 miles into a planned 24? mile pub loop and decide to keep going as I didn't need that ring anyway and I really like pubs.

I like that mantra - 'well, I didn't need that and anyway I really like that'

I wonder if I can justify a new bike out of this.

Granny ring? True riders have never heard of such a thing. The smallest should only be a 39!
Seriously though, I'm glad you didn't get hurt.

being the inner most ring the bolt is from the inside, so however it managed to pop out that far that fast (within one turn of the pedals) it was far enough to catch the frame and jam the cranks (and twist the ring). It must have been loose a long time I guess.

I'm no true rider, just a fat slob that cycles to the pub

How's the frame Jack? Sounds like you need a whole new bike to me

The incident did put a gouge in the frame, and it is very dusty too.
My chain is stretched as well.
There is one hill in my regular travels that I have to have that granny gear, or I walk it

I enjoy my triple. I'm a big rider being 220lbs (100kg), and I've had a few knee issues when griding below 60 rpms. I have no allusions of riding with the pros.
