Vuelta Stage 4 Baza > Sierra Nevada 170.2 km 23rd Aug

Stage 4 Tuesday 23 August Baza > Sierra Nevada 170,2 km

Nolte

i see the final 2KM are very flat Very Happy

first 31KM to my calculation is 4% gradient
the 21km before the relatively flat bit is about 6.2% according to my calculator
HuwB

According to Rein Taaramae, who himself was suffering from stomach cramps, Igor Anton was dropped on yesterday's final climb and got back, on the descent.
Igor GdG reckons he's not got his 2010 form.

Smokescreen?
kathy

Another victim of the stomach bug, I think.

CN reckons the heat will be a factor despite the medium gradient.

I would have picked VDB (other) but I was too late for poll. Would have been tempted by Weird Yan Brankovic though Wink

What's with the green route on the maps? Caravan route? Express route for those that have to leave the start after the start and get to the finish before the finish.
Boogerd_Fan

I picked VDB2 for the SM trophy, simply cos he did a good job already in the TTT and i think he's got a point to prove, this is the first chance he has with the road going up.

Got the afternoon off work, ready for the fireworks!
kathy

It is a power climb.  Perhaps I shouldn't have picked Scarponi (particularly seeing as Huw has picked him as well Laughing ).  If Basso was riding, I would have picked him!
kathy

Teledeporte - quick poll of fans at the finish.  Favourite to win - Purito, followed by Nibs and Anton (don't think they realise Anton is sick!)

My best guess is that it is the route the press and others can take if they want to be at the finish in plenty of time to get to the press tent with their connections and watch the rest of the race on TV.  It would be on roads that are big roads and not clogged up with caravans or cars or fans.  Just a guess.  They have those maps and routes on the Tour, in the road book.

Cav abandons!

Quite a shock. He'll need to get some racing in somehwere before the worlds.
Trouble is, there's not much about in September.

Well that buggers up my fantasy team....bollocks!!
Fontfroide

Oh dear, on some of my teams I have only one more sprinter.
kathy

Cav was the only sprinter in my top team! Evil or Very Mad
HuwB

Now Anton is starting to look like Cav..........
kathy

Interview on TDP with Gorka G, DS of EE.  Igor not feeling well and doesn't like the 37deg heat!
smarauder68

How's my longshot Kasheckin looking?
kathy

IN a word, Scott, he's struggling!
Fontfroide

Often at this stage the commentators and fans wonder if there is going to be a serious attack, or if there will be a sprint at 500 metres.  Sadly one cannot be guaranteed a battle.

I picked Anton for the GC and the points.  Hmmm.
Biosphere

What's the weather forecast over the next few days like Kathy? It seems to be causing problems with quiet a few.
HuwB

Bye bye Igor. More fantasy hell.
Slapshot 3

Anton.....bugger!
kathy

Think it will get cooler, Bio.

Nibs attacks, Igor dropped!
smarauder68

Nibali for the stage win and overall lead?
kathy

Igor 40sec behind the favourites.  If Chavanel can hang on to the peloton he will take the GC today.
kathy

Or Nico Roche in red?
Biosphere

That's not as bad as hI was expecting from the CN ticker
smarauder68

Peloton making the catch or not?
HuwB

Sierra Nevada delivers it's usual fare and result.

Spanish director fucks up the important finish.

Chavanel into red by 43".
kathy

¿Que?

Mimosa in red?

Moreno from Chris Anker and Dan Martin for stage
smarauder68

Fugalsong might be good value now for the overall...he's over 100-1 odds and proved to be pretty solid in the mountains in France...
kathy

Igor 2'44" down on leader Mimosa.  But Nieve came in with the favourites.  What happened to Nico Roche?  Looks like he lost a fair amount!

No chance. Top 10 at best.

It is a shame Kruiswijk somehow lost time yesterday, otherwise he'd be quite comfortably sitting same time as Mollema and a double-barrelled dutch assault in the mountains can begin.

Both looked comfortable today. I'm hoping one can hang tough with the climbers on angliru and TT safely enough to a podium. They have potentially got the legs if they match it with good tactics (not counting todays flogging the whole team in the valley to the foot of the S. Nevada!)

Anton's only about 90 seconds down on Nibs... that is recoverable on a MTF... but i guess it requires some form too, what wasn't so evident today.
Bartali

Playing catch up but saw the last 8pm today. Seemed like a non-event apart from Anton losing time. My man nibs is well placed even after tomorrow's stage.

Still think Fugalsong has no chance???
Boogerd_Fan

Yep. He will only lose time from now on. No more TT gifts.
