Vuelta al Pais Vasco, starts 1st April

The Vuelta al Pais Vasco starts tomorrow, 1st April.  FP thread with profiles and  startlist here.

HuwB

Finally we have live pictures. Break on a narrow, steep bit of the climb 69kms to go.
Lead of 4 minutes, with Saxo pulling the bunch.
Nolte

obviously working for nicholas roche  Laughing
kathy

It all looks very relaxed now Laughing
Nolte

wake up folks, crash has split the race.
kathy

Gerrans gets it, and Samu loses 5 seconds
HuwB

Pretty intense final 6kms.
Poor old VDB. In the wars and out of contention.
Amazed that Peraud made the 5 second group.
Most GC ambitions still intact.
Gerrans v Velits sprint pretty much in the fping ball park.
berck

Are you getting the feed over the internet or TV?

It's on Eurosport and Rai, so it's tv, but there are a number of net feeds.
Here is as good as anywhere:
http://www.procyclinglive.com/livestream/

This one is currently working and of extremely good quality.

http://88.80.15.211/b00ha/2013033...15847fdc923f773649909-552908.html

There's a full highlights package at about 20-15 CET. ( 75 minutes from post)
Not sure about whether it'll work in the US, though.
Fontfroide

Just for this moment, not very often, with Jens on the hunt, I am looking like a flipping genius.  No doubt get caught, but still.  I am happy.
Fontfroide

Oh well.  Moment of glory.  Nice one Jens.
HuwB

Matthews wins............which I'm pretty pleased about. Wink

No, they called it wrong, it's Darryl Impey, which I'm not so pleased about.
Wtf is Matthews doing at OGE?
kathy

Not Matthews - it's Impey Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
HuwB

What is Matthew's role this year? I am bemused. Why is he in this race, if not for today?
Recent Worlds U 23 have given us Coquard, Demare, Degenkolb and...........Matthews.
Spot the odd bod out.
Biosphere

Pretty countryside today. Saxo try their hand at sticking a train on the front. 21% gradient in the final half km!
HuwB

Mmm, I'm reluctant to say that Henao got that............ Razz
Biosphere

I'm a bit surprised they seem to have given it to him.
HuwB

Got it with the uphill bike throw, while Betancur too busy with his celebration-> complaint.
Colombian territory.
Contador a poor showing, imo. Clearly struggling to dance on those gradients.
Ulissi, once again out shining Damiano.
Spilak is the new phantom of stage racing GCs.
Biosphere

This is nothing to do with your FP (well done), but when you speak of a bike throw, who was he throwing it at Wink Bentacur was not celebrating IMO.

Contador is not what he used to be.

I take it you think Henao should have been DQF'd for squeezing Betancur towards the barriers?
Not reading too much angst on other forums, which is a surprise, given it involved a Sky rider................then again, he's also Colombian.
Maybe the extreme gradient helped him get away with it.
Biosphere

Certainly not a DQF, but I think there was at least a case for him to be considered being bumped back to second. I presume the stewards have done that already so so be it. Exciting to watch.
kathy

But Henao wins Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
HuwB

As soon as I saw today's finale, I remembered this epic finish from a few years back:

http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/ro...05/apr05/paisvasco05/paisvasco052

Riders were hanging over the barriers at the finish, that day.
HuwB

Wet. Sky struggling to hold the break that contains Velits who is under 2 minutes on the GC.
Meanwhile, Harmon announce that Spartacus has had another fall, this time on cobbles recon and has been taken off to hospital..........
Biosphere

RS are saying Cancellara was back on his bike later on and that it was not serious.

Sky should maybe just call bluffs and say he's taking time out of everyone that's in contention? German ES saying that Contador said he's not going to push it and take risks to win this race. The Tour is his big target and doesn't want to break a bone or something this week. No doubt himself and maybe Schleck will be in miraculous form come July Rolling Eyes

Off to collect mother in law from train station Smile
kathy

3 in a row!  Do I get a bonus mark?  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy

Crystal ball woman.
Peraud and Talansky on the deck after the finish.
mazda

Porte and Henao looking a lot like how Froome and Wiggins may pan out as dual leaders ?
Henao gets to go for it while Porte stays in touch and waits for the TT.

Of course that simple, peaceful plan gets ejected from the pram when, like last year, you have the two strongest riders, or like this year they will not have the strongest rider and rider #2 has to bust a gut for rider #1.
mazda

That downhill finish looked a lot like a stage in last years Vuelta - the one where Purito missed out on a win and bonus seconds.
mazda

Rui Costa (54 - Movistar), Herrada (55 - Movistar), Silin (68 - Astana) and Talansky (176 - Garmin) have a 25 second lead.
Making Sky chase.

Gilbert, among others, has abandoned.
HuwB

Awful conditions, including snow, but things now seem to be gradually improving.
Yes, mucho abandons and a long way to go with the sting firmly in the tail of this stage.

Sky seemed to cope yesterday and didn't need to wheel out Kiryienka until close to the end and he was very strong (at one stage his rate of closing of the gap made the time difference look like it was just a clock counting down) until he derailed himself. ES and RAIS2 going live soon.

they must've figured they're not getting any pix before quarter past. think i spotted julian winn's jumper about ten minutes ago on this old giro sprint stage.

Kilómetro 72

1:15 para la fuga de 10.

Silin y Fuglsang (Astana), Ion Izagirre (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Rui Costa, Herrada, Moreno (Movistar), Didier (RadioShack), Cherel (FDJ), Navarro (Cofidis) y Talansky (Garmin)
mazda

Can't see them giving Fuglsang/Herrada much more leeway than that.
Biosphere

Slightly later live coverage than expected. Kiryienka on the front with +70km to go. Porte looked a bit huffy and puffy. I didn't see Henao before they went to ad break. scratch

I'm presently distracted by trying to do a decent CV photo - it will save potential employer the trouble of going to my Facebook page Wink
mazda

Go away for a bit ...
Where did Txurruka come from ?
Looks like he has blown now though.
HuwB

Very much like the final road stage of Tirreno-Adriatico.
Still a long way to go and climbing to be done.
Breakaway already running out of steam.

They even get circuits to do their recon. Expected a celebratory post from Fontfroide when Pinot went  Smile

Tiptoe Pinot? Wink
BMC now have had 5 riders withdraw on this stage..........
Biosphere

I like that  Smile
HuwB

The weather has killed the race.
Biosphere

It's going to take a lot bravery to attack in this weather!
HuwB

So, they left the Porte completely open. Wink
Biosphere

Having FPed Porte for the last two days and being unimaginative was thinking about FPing him tomorrow, so I thought I might as well give him a rest today  Laughing

Sun arrived about an hour late for at least the chance of opening up the stage.

Could be wrong, but I think the 4 seconds gained will not be meaningful tomorrow.

BMC now have had 5 riders withdraw on this stage..........

amael moinard being the only bmc rider left.
cannondale lost 6 riders. cayetano sarimento only finisher.
garmin lost5. talansky and stetina remain.
lotto lost 4. bart de clerq only rider left.
argos lost all their 7 remaining riders. oh well that means 18 worldtour teams will finish the race Very Happy
vacansoleil lost 4. only 2 left in the race

in fairness, you could see with the weather and not really blame them for giving up.

Makes the efforts of the inappropriately named Fraile all the more impressive.

Just been looking at the results to see who's still in for tomorrow. It looks like about half the field finished and half the field didn't. That seems a bit extreme. Even Sky lost 3! Might the circuits have meant that if you were lapped you were pulled?
Nolte

that would be the standard system (poland being an exception) although also with a ttt for riders who might have worked hard today, unless they are a tt specialist, they may not have a purpose to continue.
HuwB

Martin murders the field.
Looks virtually untouchable.
Didn't ride the ITT like this, last year.

2 minutes out of Malori in 2nd
and a full 5 minutes ahead of the current 10th place. Shocked

I expect Porte to get close if not go better. Surprised by Contador's popularity on FP thread. His time trialing has suffered more than his hill climbing since he returned. He's off now so we'll know in half an hour. Talansky now in second a minute and a bit of the pace.

I would have, but I was out doing some shopping and errands which I could not avoid.  Bit sad really, but it happens.

Thibaut is clearly not in utterly great shape.  I was tricked.  Probably one of those French guys for whom The Tour is all.  ALL.  Bit sad, but ….
Biosphere

Porte takes 20 s out of Contador at the intermediate.

Edit: Either I can't subtract or there was a timing error earlier. Porte takes 15s out of Contador and is now in virtual yellow from Henao. Martin looking good for stage.

Edit: I've really messed up. Quintana in virtual yellow!
Biosphere

Quintana second on the stage and wins the overall!
gerry12ie

Movistar must have snapped up Bruyneel's copy of 'Time Trials the ONCE Way' on eBay...

Colombia the new home of the turbo diesel?
Unbelievable: who would have thunk it?

Collectively, Movistar prove by far the strongest team
All did great ITTs.
Maybe explains yesterday's tactic.
Boogerd_Fan

Hmm shock result with Quintana able to TT better than guys known to put in good TT efforts like Bertie & Porte!

Interesting point Bio made about Bertie's TT since coming back. Obviously he's still got the natural physiology to climb relatively well, but off the strong juice his TT isn't as fast /speculation
mr shifter

I've been watching with ES and seen some surprises especially another new kid on the block.
Great stuff but I didn't see the FP challenge thread.   Rolling Eyes
