Unpainted/Bare Metal Road Bike

So, after my "experience" with ordering on-line (See my post on Help! incompetent student seeks a road bike) I did find that I want a non-painted/bare metal road bike, the one I had bought was painted silver and I don't really like the look of painted silver.I've seen a few Ti ones, but don't think my budget will stretch that far. Looking to spend about 1000GBP (€1200).

I haven't a clue what type of metals used for bikes can be left unpainted without rusting (jeez, I'm an engineer, you'd think I'd know)- I've googled and most of the stuff comes up with unpainted seat posts or frames that require painting.

Since my on-line purchase I've also seen a few bikes on the road that I like, but I wasn't fast enough to catch them on my run-around bike to ask them what type of bike they had -extremely frustrating.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

unpainted metal for a bike frame is really Ti only.  Al corrodes and gets nasty without paint.  Steel also out. im not sure if there is an Al alloy that would do better, but my guess is youd be looking at a real custom frame, and very expensive...of course you can leave carbon nude...right bartali!!!!!????!!!!

Search the web, Im sure something you like will turn up for model and color.

I agree with HW unpainted has to be ti but,
Ive seen those frames in my local dealers. They might be what you are looking for. Its Al but you can see the metal. It looks unpainted, but has a clear coating on it. I never asked about the frame or how the bike rides but a few lads have one and I've heard no complaints. Also, I think the trek 1200 is the same deal its a clear coat aluminium frame.
In any case try to see the bike you want in the flesh first.

This got me to thinking about a mtn bike frame my hubby built about 25+ years ago and never painted.  It is a steel frame that although lives in the desert, has been through all types of terrain and weather conditions:








and it made me wonder why you couldn't clear coat a steel road bike frame?

yes, nice brazing and also, i love the patina on that steel.

Reynolds 953 could be the way to go - google it, but I think it is essentially stainless steel.

Like I said, I've seen some "bare metal" bikes, but they might be coated in clear laquer, which I don't mind.

well hubby's definitely isn't clear coated.........but surely that would be an option for you and bare steel.

Jack - Reynolds 953 is effectively stainless steel

betsy sand blast that with baking soda, then clear coat it.. i help a freind do it and frame looks great..ciao

after 25+ years, I think MrB is kinda happy with the way it is.  Besides he is building another road frame at the moment and the mtn bike is hanging on a hook.

If you don't want Ti, you can get annodized aluminum.  Ellsworth offers several different colors, including silver.  The model name and company logo are laser etched through the annodization instead of using decals.

Ice Hockey groupies the world over are known as puckbunnies, only I couldn't get an email verified quickly enough to so the testing hence the reason Betarider appeared.
