Tour 2014, Stages 8-10: Tarte Flambée, 12th-14th July

I think I'm backing myself into a corner with French dishes, but for the weekend I serve up an Alsatian Tarte Flambée (or Flammekueche as it's called on this side of the border). An easygoing pizza styled meal to reflect a tranquilo Italian in yellow.

Meanwhile, Thierry Gouvenou seems to have abandoned the ASO website (or been bumped off by the teams for a harsh 10 opening days) and there are no longer his words of wisdom as to what they hoped from the route.

Here are some profiles

Stage 8, Saturday, July 12th: Tomblaine / Gérardmer La Mauselaine - 161km

Let's add today's stage 8 climbs as they are significant:

Mrs John Murphy

I suspect today will be a Dirty Day.
Biosphere

Ta for today's profiles. Some nasty ramps in there. If these 3 days play out in a competitive attacking way, then it's going to have been an extremely tough opening 10 days. Toughest opening to a GT I can remember - but I'm sure people will point out ones I've forgotten Smile
Mrs John Murphy

After an hour

5 man break:

Chavenel
Terpstra
Yates
Kadri
Petit

Peloton @ 6 mins 36
berck

Nearly 11 minutes for the break.
HuwB

Yates should be the best climber on those ramps, but there's a lot of experience in that break.
Petit seems a shoe in for 5th. Smile

Check out the latest doping news, MJM. Wink
Mrs John Murphy

Menchov? Very bizarre but he's been retired for what a year now? Only seems to relate to the TDF
berck

Looks like the break will last. Still nearly 11 minutes and 60km. Rain in the lead group too.
Mrs John Murphy

Rain, Frank Schleck will be putting on his brown shorts.
gerry12ie

Interesting to see if Kadri can outbox Yates here...
berck

I see Europe has micro climates too. Wink

But the micro climates in the States are bigger, right? Wink  Wink

Only if you're from Texas. Wink
HuwB

And they aren't even in the Vosges, yet.
I wonder who has drawn the crash and abandon straw
for today's stage?
Those descents are going to be hairy.

FP - Schleck F
berck

I was thinking about those descents too Huw.
Mrs John Murphy

Is Cancellara going to decide that they are too dangerous and neutralise the stage?
berck

Astana riders have already been telling riders to take it easy. They showed a clip of them moving their hands down to the other riders trying to go by.

They said it's raining 'buckets' at the finish line.
gerry12ie

Katasha certainly ain't going piano anyway. Three minutes clipped off the lead in just a few kms
berck

I stepped away for 10 minutes and now it's four minutes off. Maybe the breakaway won't make it...
gerry12ie

Saxo stringing it out now. Four and a half minutes only now to Chava and Kadri
kathy

Will they catch them?
gerry12ie

It's steady now at four and a half minutes, looks like it is there for Kadri if he stays cool. I must say I do like him
gerry12ie

Kadri does a nice variation of Voecklerface
berck

It will be nice to see a breakaway succeed.
Contador trying to put time on Nibali, but Nibali is sitting on his wheel.
Mrs John Murphy

Dirty Mick drinking from the Andreas Kloeden fountain of youth
gerry12ie

Nibali isolated now - Allez Kadri
Mrs John Murphy

LOL Schleck at the back on the descent
berck

Talansky has gone down, again.
berck

Nibali maybe isolated, but he's still sitting on Contador's wheel.
berck

Condator goes, with Nibali on his wheel still.
berck

Chapeau Kadri!
Mrs John Murphy

A lot of effort from Dertie for a couple of seconds.
gerry12ie

That was a huge amount of fun, now back to that front mech Twisted Evil
HuwB

Great finishing 30kms spoiled by French coverage (understandably) of French riders.
Hate it when the breakaway gets in the way of the GC battle.
Great ride by Kadri, though.

Astana looked frail, in the end, Nibali looked pale.
Two more weeks of getting attacked?
Porte podium possibility confirmed.

Panache man Piti almost falls at the first hurdle.
Just hasn't got what it takes to be a great GC champion.

Talansky...... Embarassed
(Geraint down in the same crash)
CapeRoadie

Chris Horner on NBC Sports is slurring words and sounds drunk or doped.

If he would just put on one of those new domestique vests and load it with lead...
Bartali

That surprised me.  I thought he could have taken Bertie whenever he wanted ... then he just blew! Sad

I thought at the end it looked like Nibs missed a gear.

I think the expectation was that JF wouldn't go out the back so quickly. I thought that Astana had sent someone back to help him

But on the subject of Surprised results:

75. RODRIGUEZ Joaquim 21 TEAM KATUSHA + 16' 22''
CapeRoadie

Saxo tough team today.

From the CN ticker

Quote:
We finally have names, thanks to LeTour! Leading the charge up the first climb are: Danny Pate (Sky), Jesus Herrada (Movistar), Joaquim Rodriguez and Simon Spilak (Katusha), Sergio Paulinho (Tinkoff), Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale), Laurens ten Dam (Belkin), Jan Bakelants (OPQS), Ben Gastauer (AG2R), Tom Dumoulin (Giant), Kristjan Durasek (Lampre), Arthur Vichot (FDJ), Tony Gallopin (Lotto), Amaël Moinard (BMC), Perrig Quémeneur, Cyril Gautier and Thomas Voeckler (Europcar), Dani Navarro and Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), Michael Albasini (Orica), Danilo Wyss (IAM), Leo König and José Mendes (NetApp) and Brice Feillu (Bretagne). they have a whole 13 seconds in hand....
HuwB

Tony Martin finishes a 100km 2 up TT to go off on a 60km ITT.
Gun to tape. Totally nuts.
mazda

Might have expected a bit more effort from some of the climbers in the large escape group behind.
But once Martin was at the top there wasn't any doubt.
Biosphere

The InnerRing FPed Martin as a possibility for doing this today.

It's saying something that despite the climbs today, it's probably been the most straightforward stage since they crossed the channel.
HuwB

Your average Briancon, Pau stage.
OK in the hills, but fireworks free and then the long run to home.
Roll on tomorrow.
gerry12ie

Tony Martin is properly a horse of a man. I slept through most of it but today shouldn't take anything from a hell of a first week.

They were caught after the first climb, Martin and Marchi went and then the chasing break went later.
Fontfroide

Caught part of the stage today, and am going home for a day to see more of tomorrow on a big screen.  Facilities on the "city break" are not that good.  I have to say that when I went to a pal yesterday to help him "understand" the Tour and what was happening on the day, I had a great time, and thought you all of you a few times.  I did not have my laptop with me.

I think is has been as interesting a Tour, with as much event (good and bad) as any Tour recently.  With the start of the mountains tomorrow, things should begin to look up.  That is, I have no clear idea what will happen, seems exceedingly full of great scenarios.  Even Pierre Rolland, now having some interest in GC, suddenly one day.  Good Tour so far.  Delighted that Blel Kadri won, many meanings at more than one level.  And Tony G of the famous family in yellow.  Nice stories.  Good Tour.

Vive les Francais, for once.
HuwB

I bet they will be queuing up to get in tomorrow's break, with a raft full of
KOM points on offer and Lotto in charge of the peloton chase.

This little wall could we be a launch pad:

This weekend, because it's all about Alsace, I opened a bottle of this:

gerry12ie

Break of the day...

Thomas Voeckler (Team Europcar), Christophe Riblon (AG2R La Mondiale), Lieuwe Westra (Astana Pro Team), Amaël Moinard (BMC Racing Team), Markel Irizar Aranburu (Trek Factory Racing), Arnaud Gerard (Bretagne-Séché Environnement), Giovanni Visconti (Movistar Team), Peter Sagan (Cannondale), Joaquím Rodríguez Oliver (Team Katusha), and Jan Barta (Team NetApp-Endura)

Looking forward to Biosphere's culinary feast for week 2 - and Huw's fruits of the cellar.  The best I could come up with at the weekend was a couple of large Bellerose...

HuwB

Martin doing what he did yesterday.
Already a lot of suffering on the steep slopes of the Petit Ballon.
Tonight, we'll be picking up the pieces.
Potentially the hardest stage of the Tour.
mazda

Riblon, Barta, Voeckler, Westra, Moinard, Visconti and Rodriguez.

IAM and OPQS jumped out of the peloton on the Firstplatz descent and looks like Martin, Kwiatkowski, Wyss, Taaramae will make it across (plus picked up Sagan on the way).

Pretty good effort to make up the 2 to 3 mins that the lead group had at the top of the Firstplatz.
Bartali

WTF - how did they let Kwiatkowski go???
Nolte

contador crash. standing but wounded. doctor looking at him at side of road
Bartali

WTF - how did they let Kwiatkowski go???
Bartali

Astana waiting for Bertie ... but Bertie loosing bucket loads of time!
Nolte

contador loses 4 minutes on peloton on getting treatment. peloton is slowed though.

kiwatkowski is the gainer in this
Bartali

4.00 down on the peloton .... surely they won't wait for him???
HuwB

Dramatic stage.
Are we about to lose the second big favourite?
HuwB

Dramatic stage.
Are we about to lose the second big favourite?
Nolte

astana starts working on peloton again.
Bartali

I'm pleased that astana have started riding again.  I'm all for not kicking a man when he's down , but they can't/shouldn't wait for 4 minutes and let K back in to the race.  It is a race after all!!
Bartali

Frame failure .... ouch.  So much for Specialised's millions ...
gerry12ie

Looks like its all gone a bit mental again today!  Have I mentioned I hate work?
Bartali

I'm working at home today ... making the most of it!!
Mrs John Murphy

I'd have more sympathy but for 2010 etc
Nolte

4'40 back for contador on groupe nibali/galloper.
sagan back in the peloton.

the group waited for a short time for contador but any wait has to be reasonable and contador is just uncomfortable
Nolte

contador abandons
Bartali

And he's gone Sad  Sad.
mazda

Astana can't really slow - having given Kwiatkowski 4 mins they can't give him another 3 or 4 waiting for Contador (although that would be the most interesting option going forward for most of us)
HuwB

So, it's now Nibali v Porte?
Is this the best on offer?
About as nice a prospect as the Tour weather.
gerry12ie

Wow, what a first week. Shame, that.
Mrs John Murphy

WOW
mazda

JRod leading KoM now.

I am bit ambivalent about a top rider deliberately having crap days so that they can go for the KoM.
I guess it's not the riders fault, more down to modern day tactics than anything.

Carlton says he is a really nice bloke, so who am I to complain  Question
mazda

Vuelta might have a good lineup if this continues !
Bartali

I'd like to see the peloton close this down a little.  Tony Martin outclimbing the peloton?

Well it's been a combative first week which is more than it usually is and there is every chance of a continued battle as we have seen that  unlike the robots, Nibali can't always stay strong for three weeks
Mrs John Murphy

The Gypsy Killer doing his best Schumacher impression
mazda

Clearly 160km yesterday wasn't far enough to wear him out.
With a rest day looming he clearly wants to burn off a bit more petrol.

I wonder how the riders train properly on public roads for 200km+ in a day.
How do they put enough intensity into it ?
HuwB

When do you think MK is going to take over the pace setting ?
Looking dodgy for a stage win if they don't speed up soon.
mazda

"Back in the field and Trek are setting the pace for Frank Schleck"  Shocked
Mrs John Murphy

The GK is in a hurry to get home to his farm.

QST = Colombia = Telekom = dodgy
Mrs John Murphy

The local travellers have stolen his gas.
gerry12ie

Two queen stages in the opening week? Shocked

Today is hardly the opening week anymore ...

Forza Nibali !!!
Bartali

Come on Nibs ... take it home!!
Bartali

NIBALI

Forza Nibali
Bartali

Poor J-Rod .... polka dots a just reward!!
Mrs John Murphy

Nibs brings it home.

And no doubt much to the annoyance of FF French riders doing well

1. NIBALI Vincenzo
2. PINOT Thibaut + 00' 15''
3. VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro + 00' 20''
4. PÉRAUD Jean-Christophe + 00' 20''
5. BARDET Romain + 00' 22''
6. VAN GARDEREN Tejay + 00' 22''
7. PORTE Richie + 00' 25''
mazda

Great effort by Gallopin - will he stay 2nd on GC ?

edit - maybe not, took a minute or so too long.
Mrs John Murphy

GC:

1. NIBALI Vincenzo
2. PORTE Richie + 02' 23''
3. VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro + 02' 47''
4. BARDET Romain + 03' 01''
5. GALLOPIN Tony + 03' 12''
6. PINOT Thibaut + 03' 47''
7. VAN GARDEREN Tejay + 03' 56''
8. PÉRAUD Jean-Christophe + 03' 57''

without a doubt!!

OK Froome & Bertie are major casualties.. but Nibali's good for his lead at the minute, and 4 French in the top 10 says something too!
Bartali

Easy to feel its a diminished Tour with two major protagonists now missing ... but sometimes they don't even start the race.

Nibali is race wise - a racers racer.  If he had a bad day yesterday he rallyed well and stayed calm throught today.  Sheffield, the pave and today shows great versitility.
