Today's Injury List

O'Grady has 3 fractured vertebra, 5 broken ribs, fractured right shoulder blade and a punctured lung.

Patrick Sinkewitz collided with a spectator on the way to his hotel - he has a broke nose (an open fracture) and the spectator is in a coma in a serious condition.
naspa

Fucking hell. Those sound nasty.

Hope they all recover soon.

Crappy day for the Aussies, with Rogers out too Sad
crash48

It was like Gallipoli out there for the Australians-except there was no inept generals choosing to command the whole thing from a ship rather than the ground. Smile

Just as well Evans did not have to lead the attack Wink

Bloody inept mechanics, what with Rogers tyres coming off.

Stuart O'Grady escaped serious spinal injuries after a horrendous eighth stage for Australians at the Tour de France with Michael Rogers and Robbie McEwen's campaigns also ending today.

O'Grady's Tour ended when he crashed on the descent of the Cormet de Roselend climb, which took a costly toll on the peloton.

After being put on a special stretcher, used in case of eventual spinal injuries, he was taken immediately to hospital in nearby Moutiers where he underwent x-rays and was undergoing an MRI scan.

According to hospital officials O'Grady suffered fractures on five of his front ribs, three fractures in his back lower ribs, a punctured lung and a shoulder fracture.

X-rays and an MRI scan ruled out any spinal damage.

Earlier, his compatriot Rogers, of T-Mobile, was left with hand, knee and shoulder injuries after a crash near the bottom of the descent.

He was also forced out of the race.

Rogers was in the virtual yellow jersey and travelling in excess of 60km/h when a sudden braking manoeuvre brought him down on a left hand bend.

He was later diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder.

Fuck me ... sounds very nasty!

Stuey will be up and riding for the tour of denmark Razz
figgskzoo

DAMN!~~ I saw Rogers' crash, but I missed Stuey bite it...sounds brutal.

Well, time for the prime-time Bobke and Lurch show. I'll check in after the Disco-suckers finish their commentary.
CapeRoadie

WOW! SHITE! F!

Poor Stuey. Bad week for the Aussies. A shame, really. Just a reminder of how dangerous the sport of cycling can be.

is it just me.. are we not seeing.. more injuires than usual..
even for a TDF.. serious injuries to boot.. only 1/3 through..

the giro had spills.. but hardly this amount of carnage..
this TDF has already.. left a bad taste.. in my mouth..
it's becomie almost unenjoyable.. anticipating the next wipeout..

can guess sadists love this stuff.. unable to look away.. not me.. Sad
as a consequence.. increasing tv ratings.. more 3WF's watching.. more $$$..

and that's just shite..Mad
shimouma

There does seem to have been a lot of injuries - maybe, the lack of PEDs has resulted in not only slowed racing, but slowed reactions too?
bianchigirl

Interesting theory, shim
sheeponabike

Jesus, what a day.
Hope O'Grady recovers well - he's one of the good guys.
naspa

It might be that the crashes of the first week have made riders more nervous, more nervous riders means more mistakes and crashes, making the riders more nervous... and so on and so forth.

Even Vino looked a bit trigger shy on saturday's descent.
Monty

And according to CN, Didi was attacked by a cow
HuwB

The Cormet de Roseland is such a tough decent, always crashes.

The climb isn't too steep, averaging 6 to 7 percent. The 1967-metre climb starts already at an altitude of 800 metres so the height difference is bearable. Eleven years ago on July 6, 1996 Johan Bruyneel enjoyed some scary moments on the descent of the Roselend. Back then the Belgian was part of the Rabobank team and he enjoyed one of his better days in the mountains as he was still in the front group.

So, not all bad news. Think it's here, Zuelle crashed twice.
T'was the day that Big Mig finally cracked, took a water bottle inside the final 10k's and got a time penalty......talking of which......all quiet on the leipheimer front.

See that Sinkewitz has concussion to go with the broken nose. Can he ride with that? Usually a precautionary suspension in sport. If so, Linus is very short of help in the hills..........

I read elsewhere that he got a ten second penalty, a fine of 50 Swiss Francs (about twenty quid, probably less than he earned while he was being towed) and the team was fined 200 Swiss Francs.

Make it fit the crime, right.

Well, it seems to me this Tour might be the cleanest I've ever seen. (And I'm still undecided if that's a good thing or a bad thing Confused )

But, if a lot of these riders are off the juice, then they're obviously going to be that bit more tired. And if you're tired, we all know what happens to your reaction times....
kellyrocheearly

they do all look knackered, i'm loving it as it makes it so unpredictable

A TV crew follows the T-mob DS (brian Holm) inside his car, and we get 5-10 minutes of it the next day. Watching yesterday's stage from that angle was pretty horrendous.

First you see Cavendish pulling out, with that empty look on his face.

Then the Barloworld car nearly edges the entire T-mob car off the road !(and we are talking the Alps, here, remember).

Then Rogers is down, and then up, and then pulls out and just stands there, not listening to all the fuss around him, like his whole life is over, and then just turns and walks away.

And then Sinkewitz and the old man on the road, and the DS bent over them, literally crying, whispering "Fuck cycling. FUCK cycling", and recalling afterwards he was 100% sure they were both dying right in front of him, and vowing never to work in sport again (which of course he will).

I know it's TV and you might question whether they should broadcast it, and its sort of emotional porn, but it sure made an impression...

One could almost imagine Roid sitting in a darkened room somewhere in San Diego sticking pins in wax images - who has he got lined up next Twisted Evil

You might all be pleased to know that the spectator is out of danger now.

I have the impression that the organizer is less organized. I think they picked some really narrow and dangerous routes. At times they made mistakes of when or where to send the team and supporting cars. Most of all, I feel that the camera crews were not as keen as before in capturing some of the important moments. I recall that in previous tours, the cameras always do very throughout shots of riders along the slope. This year thus far, it seemed a bit chaotic IMO!

Any word on what caused Stuey's crash? Nothing here in the U.S. on Versus...can't seem to find a source saying definitively what happened.

Not sure what you mean, Naspa - maybe my English is coming up short here. What I mean by "broadcast" is they showed it on Danish TV on the rest day yesterday.
naspa

Yes that was what I meant.

Is there anyway of linking to the clip. I know it is emotional porn but I'd be interested to see it if possible.
nzovu

Just had a look - nothing that I can find on the web (yet).
Sooty

I remember when Boardman crashed in the TdF in Ireland - mate of mine, who rode in Europe for a few years, said......... "not charged up"

That should get a right argument going.....

Yes, I get the impression that Stuey is a tough nut to crack!

Sinkewitz

Sinkewitz broke his nose and jaw, but his legs and shoulder are OK. The doctors need to have another look at his jaw to see how serious it is, but he hopes to be out of hospital within a week and back for the Tour of Germany.

Tour spectator awakes from coma
The spectator who was injured after being struck by Patrik Sinkewitz (T-Mobile) in a freak accident after Sunday's Stage 8 has come out of a coma, the hospital has announced. The 78 year-old spectator, who hasn't been identified, was airlifted to hospital after Sinkewitz collided with him while returning to the team's hotel.

"The patient has a serious head injury, but his life is not in danger," read a statement from the hospital in Grenoble.

The accident sidelined Sinkewitz from the remainder of the Tour, another blow to the German squad on a day which saw team leader Michael Rogers crash out. Sinkerwitz suffered a broken nose, in addition to a shoulder and cuts and bruises from the accident. "I think it needs to be looked at...what contributed to the situation," T-Mobile manager Bob Stapleton told AP. "This is just the difficulty of managing such a huge sporting event."

Yikes. These guys should at least blood dope to make sure they're staying alert at all times!
