Tipster league, Smarauder Trophy 2010 - initial thoughts.First of all, do people want a change? I think many of us got bored with the format this year.
My initial thoughts
1 person picks 2 people 3 people 4/5 6or more
1st 48 points 24 12 6 3
2nd 32 points 16 8 4 2
3rd 16 points 8 4 2 1

KATHY being a bit dim what are the no's after the points for.also i think it would be a good idea to pick more than one person for the race perhaps go for the 123.

That was quick Levi, I was just trying to edit because it didn't tabulate properly. The numbers are points, so for instance - if three people pick Cancellara, and he finishes second, they would all get 8 points.

I liked the simplicity of pick one and the most winners wins.

so it's to encourage more fearleessness into the picking rather than 15 people picking cancellara and 1 person picking some rider with a dutch team

I like what you are proposing kathy, although my brian is fried just trying to understand it so if you are willing to do that then i'll go with it
Thanks again for all the great work

You seem to be making a hell of a lot of work for yourself, but I go with whatever you decide.
I think I've got it and so at next years TDF we have pharmstrong winning and 50 people have voted solely for him.
The points awarded to each would then be 48 over 50 = 0.96 of a point. Oh Dear
Be Lucky.....well you got to laugh, please
Remember as you covered this with 6 or more winners = 3 points

Agreed that awarding far more points for a surprise winner does tend to reward such a bold pick.
Practically speaking though, it sounds like a lot of work to figure out how many people picked who and then tabulate the number of points based on the result.
Perhaps it might be easier to simply make the spread between 1st, 2nd and 3rd bigger. Thus picking the actual winner of a stage or race gets far more points than one's pick ending up in 2nd or 3rd. Thus merely picking someone because they figure to finish top 3 isn't as rewarded as selecting the actual winner.
Anyway, I like the simple pick one format of this year (although I joined the forum late), it was easy to follow and do. Particularly in the stage races, there are many instances where a day of racing will have no favorite or favored rider.

No, if 6 or more pick the same guy and he wins, they get 3 points each regardless of how many more than six have picked him! whatever happens, I'm sticking to whole numbers!
Levi, whilst the idea of being able to pick more than one choice is tempting, that would make far more work than altering the scoring as I've proposed. I did start work on an automated season-long game, but I haven't got far with it yet because of lack of time.
Enchantress - your idea is interesting. The first year we did this (2 years ago), it was simply pick the winner and get a point. Nothing for 2nd and third. People were much more fearless in their predictions then. But I still think we should reward people in some way for picking an unexpected winner, rather than everyone getting lots of points for picking Cav for the sprints, Fabian for the TTs and Berto for the Tour.

Kathy wants it to be a really Fearless Pick again.
I think kathy has the Nolte picks in mind and that when he gets one then it is outstanding and deserves a better score.
I'm happy if I get my each way picks like this year.
Be Lucky......by the way.....How are the eyes now, kathy

Kathy, it all seems a bit complicated for you to work out, I reckon, but the idea is sound.
How about this?:
Only by picking the winner do you get points.
If there's only 1 person to pick that rider: 16 points.
If 2: 8 points.
If 3: 4 points
If 4-5: 2 points
If 6+: 1 point

I am not sure if I will be able to come up with a specific alternative system of scoring. I like the idea of changing it, just to see what happens, how it works for us or for Kathy, just to check out a new system. A thought occurred to me that taking any proposed new system and scoring some Grand Tour, maybe the Tour itself, and comparing the results with what we got using the current system. Then we can while away the dark hours of winter speculating about which system seemed better and why.
If I get a few things done really soon and have some time that gets freed up, I will volunteer to do this comparison of scoring systems. But I don't know if I have the time yet, so I am only suggesting a way of testing the systems more creative people come up with.

This reminds me of an Owner of a factory (I used to know) with 100 employee's.
Every year he took them on a Day Trip to the coast as his gratitude to them and one year they even flew to the Channel Islands.
The thought struck him that they might want to decide where to go and he asked for their suggestions.
He didn't bargain for the Ill will it caused with different factions wanting this while others wanted that trip and in the end he had had enough and cancelled the project.
The following year he made the decision that they would go somewhere and found the damage had been done and so he never offered again. !

I pretty sure you know that it's easy to knock up a template for the automated counting of picks and allocation of points in Excel (if you do go that route), but on the off chance you don't I can help.
Not sure though that a binary power sequence if the best way of ramping up the reward for fearlessness. Is a true FP worth 16 times the safe option? Mind you it's worse than that, cos if someone's truly fearless FP comes up trumps, than the safe option can't simultaneously win.
If we're not careful, we could end up with our very own version of Oscar Pereiro this time next year
