The perils of Facebook... Apart from, it would seem, killing the FID.
Example:
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2009/02/27/1235237887679.html
| Quote: | Scammers behind the get-rich-quick ads on Facebook have hijacked the identity of a respectable 25-year-old from New York to dupe users into handing over their credit card details.
The man, whose name is Gary Marshall, was in a state of shock when we contacted him overnight to inform him that pictures from a holiday album he had posted online had been downloaded and used in ads and on websites that are part of the scam. |
Not to mention:

Any thoughts?

that's like saying that you shouldn't use the telephone because people have been scammed using it. peoples... only your friends that you select (in my case nearly all i've met face to face barring a few from various cycling forums) can see your page and any info on it. you can choose whatever security you like... even restricting friends from seeing photos etc. yes... the applications can draw info from your profile page IF you use an application... and they can only draw what you put there. you can put nothing if you like.
you guys sound like those puritans warning everyone within earshot about playing with the devil. stalkers... who TF is gunna stalk you? one of your friends?
and drongo... i couldn't work out what the problem was in those two articles. the first scam is only because people chose to befriend and deal with a complete stranger right? the second one was complaining that her friends list could see her relationship status even though she'd erased it?? Big Deal. Sounds like newspapers are xenophobic about internet communication network media and like to propagate scare stories. notwithstanding people like to read about crime and scandal. it's kind of funny witnessing all the naysaying to justify something people don't wanna do anyway.

Aah Crank - you're just staunchly defending Facebook cos it brings you all da laydeeeez...
I kind of agree with you.
I don't have a Facebook account: I spend too much time on the computer as it is, without the need for another reason. But it's pretty clear what Facebook does and doesn't do. If you're willing to put your life on the web; well, you reap what you sow.
Fact is, people don't think about the implications of this stuff before they follow the herd and join up. These articles, silly as they are, point them out for those who don't think for themselves. The only problem is when they say that you should or shouldn't use a particular technology. That's something to work out for yourself.

you' wouldn't like facebook cyclingtv. you wouldn't be able to call someone a loser with anonymity like you can here. it's so refreshing having a civil conversation with people you know and who converse like you're talking face to face. you don't say things hiding behind a screen like you do here (not that anybody has the desire to)... that may earn you a hospital visit in real life.
of course... if one wishes to read and discuss things about cycling... this is the place to be. although facebook has some pretty interesting and diverse community groups... just by weight of numbers and the ease with which one can find them in a search.
facebook is just a network that makes keeping in touch and socialising (albeit in cyberspace) easier.

Still, you have to be careful what you say. The penalty can be stiff.

LOL.
I would have expected that pretty-much every pc in the workplace in the UK is key-logged to protect the companies? The girl's a fool. A fool that should have been working not facebooking hehe.
I use facebook, it's a good way to share family photos.

I agree with Runitout. Facebook may be a great tool if used properly; unfortunately, a lot of people don't realize the consequences of actions that can be seen by the public. If you are an impulsive poster, at the very least, make your profile private!

People will be stupid with or without facebook.

I totally agree but it does give the really stupid ones an opportunity to emphasis stupidity on a grand scale.
Before the internet stupid people could live and died in obscurity and the world never knew.
I am of course excluding politicians, celebrities and some athletes which have had the opportunity to display stupidity in a broad venue for years.
I know that I feel much more secure knowing how many stupid people there are in the world.

I joined Facebook the other day - I was amazed by how many people I know are on there. Even Mark Cavendish came up on the list of suggested 'friends' - haven't a clue why
