TDF Stage 19 - Modane Valfréjus to Alpe-d’Huez 109.5km 22/7

Stage 19 - Modane Valfréjus Alpe-d’Huez 109.5 km

Mountains

Mountain passes & Hills

Modane Valfréjus Alpe-d’Huez - 109.5 km

   * Km 26.5 - Col du Télégraphe (1 566 m) - 11.9 km climb to 7.1 % - Category 1
   * Km 48.5 - Col du Galibier (2 556m) - 16.7 km climb to 6.8 % - Category H
   * Km 109.5 - Alpe d'Huez (1 850 m) - 13.8 km climb to 7.9 % - Category H

Quote:
JEAN-FRANÇOIS PESCHEUX’S ANALYSIS : The stage everyone is afraid of

“Today’s route runs in the opposite direction to yesterday’s. The riders tackle the successive climbs of the Col du Télégraphe and the Galibier, and then finish with the climb to Alpe d’Huez, which returns after an absence of three years. It is a short stage. Nevertheless, all of the riders will be afraid of it. Those who aren’t going so well will be concerned about the cut-off time for elimination and the favourites will know that they will pay a heavy cost for any sign of weakness. The shortness of the stage allows the climbers to attack from very early on, which is not something they will be used to. This stage will be thrilling and, bearing in mind that it comes on the back of two other tough days, there is a chance that a lot of damage will be done today.”

So will the French cancel the Alps for a hometown win Wink

Geraint

Stage 18 looked a lot like 2008. Andy riding off instead of Sastre and Evans looking around for a wheel to suck, then realising he has to chase. Hopefully, that tired him out. Without the 50 seconds lucky break Evans got because of the rain, the tour could be almost over already. Frank will do the attack this time, but Andy could use another 30 seconds lead to give him a decent advantage in the TT.

does anybody seriously think basso has a hope?

Basso doesn't have the jump in his legs to gain enough time tomorrow...he could in theory win the stage, but he'll never win by more than a minute...He would need to win by 2 minutes and then ride a great TT.
Bartali

Basso has had a good Tour really, but he lost too much time in the TTT and his poor descending on Tuesday and Wednesday have cost him dearly.  Still, he's looking capable of a top 5 finish which is not a complete disaster.
Nolte

i'd say Basso's best hope is to try to do what Sastre did in 2007 and attack at the very bottom just at the start. if successful, he'd be able to take the whole climb at his own pace

Wasn't Sastre's ride in 2008?  Or am I confused?

Either way, I don't think Basso has the burst neccessary to leave the Schlecks, Evans or TV behind.
Nolte

yes you are right.

when you get to my age, all the years sort of blend into one Wink
Bartali

If anyone want's to upset the applecart now they have to thrash the peloton over the telegraph and all the way to Plan Lachet; and then attack on the last 8km of the Galibier.
gerry12ie

I see an alliance continuing between Leopard and OPL tomorrow that started with the soft-pedalling at LBL.  It suits Vanendert to work with the Schlecks tomorrow as he could lose the KOM to AS and Gilbert could make a nuisance of himself on the lower slopes of ADH if he is around - and of course he is in ALL the shop windows...
HuwB

Frank's turn to stick the boot into Cadel. No question and no help forth coming.
The Schleck brothers to be to Le Tour, what the Williams sisters were to Wimbledon.
ullrichfan

As it's a short stage, isn't there a good chance a sizeable break will get away over the Telegraphe/Galibier and possibly hang on?
Geraint

Something heartwarming about chipmunk getting worked over by the Suxo/Leopard Trek boys and not having a wheel to suck. In 08 Sastre took constant shit for being weak and not dominating the race. Suck that wheel good Andy.

I agree with you! After 6 plus hours yesterday, I wonder how much energy will the elite guys have left in the tank today? I think there's a good chance the elite will be too knackered to put on a show today.

FP for Stage 19:

1)Roy...Finally survives in a break and gets the KOM jersey and stage win.
2)LL Sanchez...@14 secs
3)Chavanel....@31 secs
4)Casar........@44 secs
5)F.Schleck...@1:48
6)Evans........@2:22
7)A.Schleck...@2:25
8)Contador...@2:25
9)Sanchez....@2:25
10)Basso.....@2:44
11)Cunego...@2:55
12)Danielson @3:15
19)Voeckler..@3:44

Voeckler finally relinquishes yellow!
Bartali

Jonny Barbedwire attacks from the gun!! Smile

Is he still in with a KOM shout? I know I could look it up, but I'm really posting so we get closer to page two and I can actually read the posts without a 48" screen Smile

Do they not have scroll buttons in Italy?
HuwB

All go down the valley.

Now, here's an interesting little debate.

Take the TTT out of the race and with it,
Tommy V's then unnecessary kamikaze Pinerolo descent
and the current GC would look like this:

1) Thomas Voeckler
2) Andy Schleck        @ 1'-01"
3) Frank Schleck       @ 1'-54"
4) Cadel Evans          @ 1'-58"

Those pescky, dang team time trials!
smarauder68

A group of 12 riders have joined Hoogerland....I'm expecting Roy to be among them as he is on 45 points and actually could take the KOM lead by winning the first 2 climbs today.

I hadn't realized that Jerome Pineau's uncle had fallen into the river, in Gap and died.
Jerome is utterly depressed and ready to be hors delay, this evening.

But he's in the break, isn't he?

That's ok because we don't have resize large jpgs of profiles here in Ro otherwise I would have made into a smaller size.
smarauder68

The Schlecks were ready....not many others bothered...
smarauder68

Looks like Contador worked a deal with Barredo today....

Nice job by Voeckler!
smarauder68

Sanchez, Basso and Cunego didn't bother chasing....
Boogerd_Fan

chapeau to Tommy to dragging himself back up there - perhaps being tactically astute as he is, he knows those Bertie digs are 100m and then sit down again. But he won't be able to make too many more of those efforts if Bertie keeps stopping/starting.

Evans, Voeckler are not going to be greatful for this... but Andy looks comfortable.

Ha... Frank gone!
Bartali

FFS ... this is interesting!

Liguria. Sul mare. Very Happy
Bartali

He's killed Frank Shrek!!
Bartali

TV will pop soon!
Boogerd_Fan

I can only assume he's after the KOM jersey... if Andy's ride of 60km was unbelievable, what to say of Contador's 100km attack over 3 mountains? haha

Altho that 2nd acceleration did break him, Frank is keeping his powder dry for the Alpe i reckon. They surely will catch this lot on the descent of Galibier?
Bartali

Gap coming down .. am I talking to myself?
Bartali

They'll catch them by Plan Lachat at this rate ...
HuwB

Beefy Bert lights up another stage.
Can this last?

Dead Frank, Cuddles on elastic. I hope so!
Fontfroide

No matter what happens, this is the best Tour in ages.  And me arguing about cut off points.  I should know better.  My apologies.  Great tour.
Boogerd_Fan

intriguing stuff, but again Bertie's team did not last long when he bridged across. At least Leopard guys yesterday maintained some pace.

liquigas pulling them back together
Bartali

Down to 45 seconds from nearly 2 minutes ...
Boogerd_Fan

obviously Contador disliked Cav's behaviour yesterday as well. Making sure he misses the cut today too - its the ONLY explanation Very Happy Wink
Bartali

I'm talking crap ... looking at the wrong time gap

TV and Evans popped!
Bartali

Yup ... happens to me all the time Cadel ... its ya legs mate not the bike!!
HuwB

Bang bang, Evans and Voeckler killed.
Cuddles has a mechanical, too.
SlowRower

Evans mechanical?

Not sure. Looked like the old "Is my back brake rubbing?" gag.

Either way, Andy conspicuously didn't even pause for breath to wait...

Changed bike - must be a mechanical.
Boogerd_Fan

WHAT THE HECK!?!

Evans in meltdown!
gerry12ie

This is amazing stuff in a truly memorable Tour.  Gotta go now or else Aer Lingus will dock me 20 points...

Enjoy the rest of this ciao
smarauder68

This is a throwback to 1985!

I love it!
HuwB

Evans at 1'-06"
Severo

Where's Rolland? Not helping TV because he can't or because he's going for the white jersey?
Bartali

Here come the Leakygas cavalry
smarauder68

Can the Liqigas, Evans group bring them back on the descent???
Bartali

Severo wrote:

Because TV lost his head and charged after contador rather than waiting
Bartali

smarauder68 wrote:

First 8km of the Galibier Scott.  The Tele descent is too short ..

How many points were available at the top there? Does it put Schlekette into the spotty jumper?

Yes.
Bartali

Yup!  I think so.
smarauder68

the gap to Evans is only 1:10....plenty of time to pull them back...I think AC and AS might be dead on the Alpe.....
Bartali

I agree ... they've only just done the Cat 1 climb.

As long as Cuddles and TV are dead too, advantage Frank Schleck.
kathy

Gap going out now!
Biosphere

If I trust the CN ticker, there are 5 Iberians in the lead group. Might be interesting Smile
smarauder68

Can Contador push the gap out to 3 or 4 minutes on the Galibier??? I think he'll need 3 or 4 minutes to prevent being caught on the long descent.
HuwB

Gap at 1'-40".
Andy has reverted to Mr Conservative.
If Bertie blows up, a golden opportunity to take minutes into the ITT could go out of the window.
Stop doing your Levi Leipheimer impression.

when he couldnt follow the 2nd burst from AC i think thats exactly why he sat up.
meanwhile AS is winning the Tour (unless they get pulled back, then it is who can last longest on Alpe without team mates.. and i must say AS looks fresher than TV or Evans).
berck

Got to head to work. Too many fireworks happening already! I'll be around again in 45 minutes...

Stop doing your Levi Leipheimer impression.

Today was probably meant to be get Frank into Yellow day.
So Andy isn't allowed to ride for himself.

Of course he may just take off once AC drags him all the way down the mountain.
Bartali

So where are the BMC boys when you need them?
HuwB

Andy gets the nod from the DS and that spells disaster for the chasers.
mazda

Flecha takes a pull for Voeckler.
So no hard feelings from the car crash day.
Boogerd_Fan

BMC Boys hiding behind some big turns from the Liquigas Lads.

The weakness in the support is again exposed - i have to say that applies to Basso as well as Evans to be honest. Gap pulling out to 2 mins on the lower slopes.

I wonder how Bertie will be feeling over the top where it hits the 9-10%? He wasn't too comfortable yesterday or in the pyranees at those gradients.

TV was crazy to attempt to follow AC and AS. Now caught in no-mans-land for 80km? haha

edit/ gap back down to 1m30.. so some co-operation behind chase is getting organized now.
mazda

Anyone know who is in the Evans/Basso group ?

Yes.

Nothing has been won yet, but the general and mountains classification have not been won by the same rider since Merckx in 1970. A full list:

Bartali 1938, 1948
Maes 1939
Coppi 1949, 1952
Bahamontes 1959
Merckz 1969, 1970

Some of the other great climbers won them both but not in the same year.

Just out of curiosity, the general and points classification double is the more elusive one, won by just two riders:

Merckx 1969, 1971, 1972
Hinault 1982

Not many people will need reminding that Merckx is the only one to win all three in 1969. Merckx also won the combativity and combination classifications; his team won the team's competition.
cyclingtv

imo.. TV should of gone back into the evans/basso/frank group.. big mistake..
maffy

i thought that too. on the  other hand, ctv, he's holding the gap at the moment better than one would expect.
cyclingtv

yes but he's going to be gassed and probably
bonk on the alpe.. maybe sooner..

but what do I know Wink
maffy

sensible take it easy back to the group means you've got to have befief that the group's got the cahunas to get back
smarauder68

Can Basso and Evans get gritty and minimize losses on Galibier??? The gap is hovering around 1:51....if they can keep it under 2 minutes, I think they'll make the catch....
mazda

Does Voeckler think this is his only real chance of winning the whole thing - keep ahead of Evans and somehow catch AS and AC ?

Voeckler is hoping to make the catch on the descent and then finish ahead of the Evans group...It looks like the Evans group is maintaining a 1:45 to 1;50 gap.....they should make the catch before the Alpe....
smarauder68

Looks like contador is cracking again...gap down to 1;20 suddenly...
mazda

All good for Frank, if he has anything that is.
HuwB

Bye bye Basso.
smarauder68

Evans doing huge work again to pull back AC...
cyclingtv

poor AC seems disturbed no one else will pull.. duh..
