Touristy bit. Tonnerre is on the banks of the beautiful canal de Bourgogne - started a French canal holiday there many years agao.

Does that connect to the canal du midi? Or am I totally in the wrong area?I'm so jealous and have always wanted to do a canal boat holiday. Is canal boating as idyllic as it sounds?

You can get to the Canal du Midi from the Canal de Bourgogne, but to do so you would have to travel down the river Rhône (scary), and get on to the Canal du Rhône à Sète, before joining the Canal du Midi. I have also spent a holiday on the Canal du Midi, which is wonderful, but rather busy. On the MIdi, we met a Welsh couple, who had brought their yacht across the channel down the noerthern canals to Paris, and then down through Burgundy and the Rhône to the southern canals. they were planning to sail over to Majorca in the autumn to spend the winter there.
Of all the holidays I've had, the canal holidays (several, all in France) have been the most memorable. You get to hunt out small local restaurants in tiny villages, discover obscure vineyards (!) etc. Although I belive it's rather more commercialised nowadays. Recommended reading Hugh McKnight's 'Cruising French Waterways' - I have an old well-read copy, although I understand he's updated it recently.

Sounds fantastic - must add it to my ever growing list of Things to Do!

'Long Dog to Carcassonne' by Terry Darlington is a good read too.
Complete novice who crossed the Channel then toured Europe and down to the Canal du Midi in a narrowboat.
Bill Davies has a good blog about narrowboating too, loads of it in France.

Cav's just beaten Hushovd in an intermediary sprint; I suspected he would end up getting dragged into a dogfight for the green jersey.

Is there a bike race on?

i did think about apologising for interrupting the conversation... looks like it's another "Duffers" day. Quite seriously, that's one of the things I love about cycling, the interaction of a race happening with places which hold memories or significance for people.

I was fooled by these finish graphics yesterday.
Today's uphill finish has a gain of 15m over the last 1000m = 1.5%

I shall hunt out that book on Amazon or Ebay - sounds good. Although I would prefer something more comfortable than a narrowboat on the wide French canals.
Edit - I have ordered it, for 1p, plus P&P of course! For anyone else's reference, it appears to be called, 'Narrow Dog to Carcassonne'.
Yes, there is a race on - hopefully on TV soon.

Clearly you don't enjoy the sprinting. I used to feel that way. Until I started racing, which changed my outlook on sprinting forever. Now I love every stage. Go get on your bike and try to get up to 35 mph just for the hell of it.

Good call!
Kloden back there, too.
Evans hurt his hand a bit, but is smiling, so.....
Leipheimer, not sure
Pretty fast corner to get taken out on....
Of course, no replays.

Rinaldo Nocentini –
“It would be great to wear it in Italy but…” His not exactly the coincidental leader
but Rinaldo Nocentini admits that his days in the yellow jersey could be numbered… | Quote: | | “I am very happy to keep the yellow jersey for another day. My team has worked well for this and I’ve taken it a little step further. I know that it will be very difficult on Friday and it’s already not so sure that I could keep it after this stage. But I’m in good condition, so I can believe in something. Of course it would be great to be able to wear it in Italy but to do this I’ll have to defend it on the climb to Verbier and with just a six second lead over Contador and Armstrong at eight seconds, it will be difficult.” | good luck.. and bring on friday..
if he keeps it friday then he will see Italy in yellow

I'm celebrating Tyler Farrar's 77th place finish today by power myself with a burrito from Chipotle.
Yum.
I think Columbia should have gone for stage win today, instead of riding like they were defending green.

I was just making note of the important point you made. He really wants green in Paris.

Oh I like the sprinting alright, but the lack of real competition for Cavendish makes them a bit ho hum - not that that's his fault, you can only compete against what's there as has already been stated.
Enjoyed Sorenson's win today - his face really said it all about how important it is to win on the biggest stage of all.

In all seriousness I'm in the camp that says any cycling on TV is better than no cycling on TV ... and I am appreciative of the hours of coverage we have these days compared to 20 years ago.
But (there's always a but) I am so so disappointed by the lack of GC action ... or even potential action. Still, on the plus side the Alps are nearly here

It's certainly been a long old week. I would echo BG's comment about Sorenson though - it is alway a pleasure to see an unheralded rider get a stage win and you can see it means a huge amount to them. Does anyone remember Joel Pelier winning a stage from a long breakaway sometime around 1990? I don't think I've seen someone cry so much before or since
