Study about Tour riders longevity.

Just found this today. A study shows that Tour de France riders live longer than the general population. The study is based on French riders.

So, I've just read the link and not the study, but does it not just say that people with good physical attributes who trained and dieted to achieve high levels of fitness were healthier and lived longer than the average Joe on the sofa? I get the doping didn't seem to do them harm or maybe that's the main point?
Bartali

This is just french TdF riders of course ... not sure whether that can be extrapolated to other countries.

I thought that it was well known that great climbers die young.  Have the french ever had any great climbers?

Indeed ... but I wouldn't include Virenque in my list of 10 top climbers.  Would you?
MAILLOT JAUNE

I wouldn't even include him in my top 10 of anything.......oh, wait, yes I would, he'd be my top 10 of w*nkers !!!!!!

Best French climber of "modern times"? - Hinault/Fignon, Mottet, J-F Bernard, Moncoutié...?
Bartali

Hinault ... maybe Fignon.

Thanks for pointing that out Berck - glad you understood my subtle sarcasm.

I agree.

Virenque is the most well preserved and protected mythical great cyclist in my lifetime.  A guy who won a jersey no one else competed for (except one year), and which he won in a style which is boring disturbing and was copied by a few other French guys who were clearly not even remotely the best climber.  I don't even like the way he talks.

Useless as a cyclist, but rather wise and clever in deciding what to do and executing his plan.

Having said all those nasty things, he did actually win the jersey seven times.  Focussed.

He should have been stripped of those jerseys when he was found guilty after the Festina Affair.

He won four of them while with Festina. He won that last three after being suspended.

Whatever you say.
Not one of you could hold his wheel on a downhill mountain descent.
Sheer poetry and guts.

How to win the KOM  was copied from Robert Millar and others.
