Stealing UKIP's Roads

This is doing the rounds, and very funny it is too (but in a disturbing way).  The responses from the UKIP local election candidate to questions from the Cambridge cycling campaign seem to mainly focus on the predictably hoary road tax issue - again and again...

Quote:
Q. Cambridge is seeing massive housing growth, with tens of thousands of new journeys into the city expected daily. Given that building tunnels, knocking down houses, or providing new public transport is very expensive, would you agree that creating very high-quality cycling routes to encourage new people to cycle offers by far the best cost-benefit ratio for transport improvements that facilitate growth of the City and surrounding areas?

A.  You are asking for benefits paid for by other road users.
I would prefer more car parks.

Q.  London’s Mayor has launched plans for proper prioritisation of space for cycling in London, with a 15-mile substantially-segregated route by removing traffic lanes from cars, three ‘mini-Hollands’ and more. Do you and your party support a new London-style bike plan for Cambridgeshire?

A.  No. This proposal amounts to theft from the people who pay to use roads and the benefit given to those who don't.

Etc, etc...

It IS disturbing.  I keep wondering why it is that so many people, who should know better, think the taxes we pay for cars, are all spent on roads.  They aren't, but people keep thinking they are.  It is one of those examples of something pretty simple and innocuous, not highly partisan, a fact that simply is not true.  Seriously disturbs any sense I might have of trying to tell a different story.  Not that the whole argument makes much sense.  Taxes and social choices are often made for things I don't actually use.  I mean, not everyone goes to a library.  Or the Olympics.

That guy is really quite sad.  But then I seldom have heard anything from the UKIP that really grabs my positive attention.

Well I've now sent an email to UKIP regarding this.

Pointed out that cyclists were on the roads before cars and road tax money just goes to the exchequer anyway.
That they must be desperate for candidates to have an Idiot like Burkinshaw to represent them.

The only way to redeem this man is to have him ride a cycle through a busy town center several times to find what damage a cycle will do to his precious roads.

Typical UKIP pillock! Twisted Evil

The unfortunate fact is that in most countries in Europe cyclists are viewed by law and society as legitimate road users and in these islands they are viewed by many drivers as taking up road space that they pay for.  Of course this view is utterly wrong but the UKIP candidate unfortunately represents the views of a sizeable minority of drivers.

I'm sure every cyclist in the UK or Ireland has been harrassed in some form for simply trying to hold a safe line on the road, and the general ignorance about riding two abreast is astonishing and dangerous.  There was a recent spate of TV ads here that highlighted cyclists road rights but regrettably we need alot more information put out there to force a change in opinion and behavior.

I must have auto-corrected 'road tax' with 'vehicle tax' hundreds of times in conversations and it doesn't make a blind bit of difference, and I won't even mention the abuse that race marshalls get.

Not really related, but the notion of buying policy of the shelf made me smile and I loved the bit where one of the party strategists assesses the membership

Quote:
"The charm and frustration of Ukip is we have doctors who fancy themselves as tax experts, painters and decorators who know all about strategic defence issues and … retired dentists who understand the most intricate political solutions for the nation."

On the other hand, I'm not sure it's much different from any other party when it comes to membership?
Biosphere

Again not strictly related but . . .

Some examples of bad UK cycle lanes etc. I wonder if the bike ranks run over by a truck was deliberate Smile

I'd've thought Ukip will be overwhelmingly white, male, middle class and over 50. Coincidentally, this is the profile of the Lib Dem membership (and MPs).
Mrs John Murphy

I'm shocked that he didn't suggest that keeping out all East European and brown people is the best solution to congestion.

Well your the one educating them to come here, so we can look forward to another pile of your handiwork arriving here to sit on pavements with a small child "Begging". Thanks for nothing.
Come home and pay Taxes before you spread more of your Bigot views.

On Topic.
I remember the first cycle lanes I encountered were on the old Crawley By Pass with broken glass and rubbish.
We stopped and lifted our bikes across the grass onto the Dual Carriageway and continued to Brighton.
OK things have got busier these days and by the look of those pictures they still don't sweep the cycle lanes.
Whenever I get involved with bureaucracy I always make the point that club cyclists will ride two abreast.
This is exactly the same as a car driver with a passenger at his side.
Cyclists were on the roads (tracks maybe) First before cars.
Mrs John Murphy

I'll do some educating now.

It's 'You're' not 'your'. Cheers Mr Bigot.

As for complaining about paying taxes, has Wiggins paid his taxes yet or is he still using off shore accounts?

Oh sorry my mistake, only brown people and those with the wrong sort of passport are the people who tax dodge. Not brave clean English boys.

Oswald is calling you my boy. You'd best goosestep down to the nearest polling station to vote for the paramilitary wing of the rotary club, or are you more of a BNP boy? Who knows you might even find some brown people or some Europeans to hate on your way. You'll feel a lot better after your daily hate.

Both probably. Now he's got the knighthood, he can't lose it for minimising his tax bill.

The reference was about your opinions and not what you are.
Teach em proper english fer christs sake, well somebodies. strewth.
Mrs John Murphy

Were you looking in the mirror when you said that?  You meant 'you are' but said 'your'. It's not my fault you can't speak or write English. Maybe you can find a nice brown person to teach you.

Don't cry now, the nurse'll be along soon to clean your rectum of your opinions soon.
