Stage 6 TdF: Fri, July 6th: Épernay - Metz 208km

Something for Everyone

Jean-François Pescheux wrote:
Yet another sprinters' stage. After all, Christian Prudhomme and I want to make sure there is something for everyone. But will the winner in Saint-Quentin be able to triumph in Metz too? One thing is for sure. This is another beautiful stage, with a start which celebrates the Coteaux Champenois, and a 207.5 km course devoid of tough climbs but full of nostalgia, since it comes near the Lac de Madine, where the Grand Prix des Nations used to be held. But once in Metz, all eyes will be set upon the famous "blue line" of the Vosges, where La Planche des Belles Filles awaits the peloton tomorrow...

Well there's not been much to say about the last few days. At least once today is out of the way there are five days of what should be GC action Smile
HuwB

Porte, VDB, Valverde, Gesink, Westra, Greipel and Peraud have all crashed.
Probably fell asleep.
A few bumps and abrasions all round.

Ciao for now. Shall read you all tomorrow.
Boogerd_Fan

Ahhh.... one of the biggest successes of the opening week has been Gesink surviving nearly a whole week staying upright... !
kathy

Thlis looks like a stage where I'm glad I only just got in to watch!
kathy

What on earth was that guy doing with the hosepipe?
Fontfroide

Just got here, did I miss anything? Wink
SAP

Danielson just abandoned after another brutal crash.
gerry12ie

Sounds like absolute carnage today?? Schleck, Mollema, Danielson, Poels, Hesjedal all out or out of the equation yes?
kathy

Valverde, Rolland also losing out!
kathy

And Gesink, Cobo
gerry12ie

Bloody hell.  What is it with these GT riders that they cant ride bikes properly.  They need to start going out earlier in the year...

Seriously though, there wasn't this level of July madness when they used to ride for the full season!
kathy

, Poels, Astarloza also out!
Severo

Poels not out. Who will Goss lose to today?
Fontfroide

Sagan of course

Source: Twitter. They are saying race radio was premature. Doesn't mean he'll finish today... but maybe.
HuwB

Haven't seen the finish, yet, but have seen the crash.

Interesting the shit Movistar took for riding after crash, yet today when GreenEdge, FDJ and BMC do the same and it becomes all about placement.

As a result, a shit small stage, I suspect at this point, ruins the GC battle.
Fontfroide

Certainly takes out a few guys, but it might be interesting and unpredictable and surprising.  Let's wait and see.

I wasn't impressed (esp with GreenEdge), but on the other hand they didn't gobble up the breakaway until quite near the end so couldn't have been going at it too strong?
cyclingtv

what I saw today was an example of poor sportsmanship..

since nearly two thirds the peloton were either caught up or
blocked for a couple of minutes the first 70 or so riders who had
the good fortune to just happen to be in front of the carnage
shouldn't have ridden as hard as they did straight after the crash..

imo.. sad to see and shame on them..
HuwB

Typical Tour madness.
Shove the entire peloton onto small roads for the final 50kms and this is what happens. From dead calm to utter panic, so far from the finish.
Everybody is desperate to ride at the front, so as to stay out of trouble.
Consequently, you have whole teams trying to move forward, surrounding their protected GC man, alongside entire sprint trains, going hell for leather, way too early.
All this on roads, less than 4 metres wide.
I tend to agree, ctv, although the argument that they only just caught the break is sort of valid, if had happened 15kms earlier, I reckon the same teams would have reacted just the same.
I think there were a few kms buffer, to sit up a bit.
Why no Cancellara calming for Schleck, today?
Boogerd_Fan

"RRRRAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR"

is probably how Sagan's 'Hulk' celebration sounded like at the finish line today

SAGAN!!!!
cyclingtv

seems garmin group may have been distracted
and a few hot headed to boot.. as in mr farrar..

Almost all of Garmin’s riders were caught up in the chaos, a day after mayhem led Tyler Farrar to try to storm a rival team bus after feeling aggrieved at tumbling in another smash.

Some riders say team messages through earpieces are distracting them and others have suggested the high number of early crashes are down to teams not riding as teams like normal, meaning individuals have less protection from the “train”.

Team Sky and BMC managed to stay ahead of the carnage to keep race favourite Bradley Wiggins and defending champion Cadel Evans safe, seven and 17 seconds respectively behind Cancellara who expects to lose the lead on Saturday’s first mountain stage.

“It’s the worst I’ve ever been in. It just shouldn’t happen. We were ploughing into each other at 60-70 kph at hour,” Millar said.

“I was lucky I think, I was in the third wave (of the crash) so I started landing on guys and then bikes were hitting me and chains were going off and all over me,” added the Briton, pointing to a long, bloody gash on his arm.

“I think Ryder is out as well, we’ll see.”

Other top names such as RadioShack’s Frank Schleck and world champion Mark Cavendish were also held up by the crash.

U.S. outfit Garmin have been in the news throughout the Tour with management denying part of a report on Thursday which said four of the team had agreed to six-month suspended sentences in return for testimony against Lance Armstrong in a doping probe.
and here I thought race radios made the riders safer.. Confused

Part of Taaramae's stage blog:
Quote:
This was followed by some more pushing and shoving and I was around the 80th place, where about 25km from the finish everybody crashed big on the downhill. The only thing I remember was, that I tucked my head, because otherwise an other bike would've crashed into me. I luckily survived the crash (at speed 65-70km/h) and got into a little bunch with me, Gallopin and Horner - all very good time trial riders. The gap between the bunch was about 200m and even by giving it our all it took us 6km to take back that 200m.

So, they really are GreenDregs, imo. Clearly riding absolutely flat out, yet with no GC man, unless you count Evans.
Apparently, they have said as much.
Boogerd_Fan

I guess they could argue that they wanted to catch the break so that Goss could have a crack at 45 pts for the Green jersey (with no Cav around)...

Evans didn't really benefit that much though - the guys left behind were climbers..

Menchov, Wiggins, Kloden, are still all there on practically the same time.

Big winners today for me were Nibs, Basso &  JVDB. If they want to make the podium a few similarly built good climbers, average TT'ers just got removed from the picture.

Rabobank's tour in tatters. Again.
Bartali

Watching the highlights ...bad form IMO.
HuwB

Dead on the 25km to go mark and the break at just 45 seconds.
That's nothing.

Watch the clock after. Wink

Not hard to see why Danielson abandoned:

Oh and now I read on CN that the commies have hit
Gesink and Kruijswijk with a 20 sec time penalty for drafting.
Nice touch of sympathy, that. Rolling Eyes
HuwB

Freire broken rib and punctured lung
Txurruka broken collar bone.
Rabo Cycling ‏@RaboCycling
Two broken ribs and a perforated lung for @wynants82, unfortunately he's out of the Tour. He will go to the academic hospital of Nancy now.

Peter Cossins ‏@petercossins
Movistar's Ivan Gutierrez says there's 14 other riders in hospital with him. There are more in another hospital in Nancy

weening, used up pulling the bunch to the intsprint, content to push his old mucker with the broken bike behind the frantic chase (with plenty of car help)

it's like vaughters thinking farrar's a proper sprinter. safety radio for the win.
gerry12ie

Very poor form that.  Does safety radio mean 'there's half the field down - it's safe to attack'?  There was a job there to be done by the either the MJ, the champion or the GC team and they all shirked it.  They didn't have to sit up completely, just spread the word to cool the jets but it suited them to let Greenedge drill and reap the reward.

Not even into the second week and there are at least a dozen podium hopefuls out of the frame.  Bah!

Suggestions that Riis thinks Evans and Sky should take some responsibility for the number of crashes but its in Danish - perhaps Tanya could throw some light on it?

gerry12ie

Now thats a narrow road and thats a lot of cyclists...

Beasley

Well, Schleck was down, so I expect Cancellara tried something. But if people don't listen...
Boogerd_Fan

reminds me of Passage de Gois in '99 and Armstrong throwing his team on the front after the crash.
Beasley

I think what Riis's getting at is that it's not their fault per se, but the number of crashes are the result of congestion at the head of the field.

That drives the pace up earlier and what would have been minor bumps turn into significant crashes.

Welcome to the post-HTC world. The armchair warriors may love it, but their darlings sure don't... Laughing
cyclingtv

if that was the tactic used sure stinks to high heaven..

never forget though what's goes round comes round..
Severo

So, why not: Green and yellow jerseys, plus the top 2 "favourites" and their teams say "okay, let's cool it for a few minutes"... if GreenEdge (or whatever team) don't agree, let them take off, just leave Sagan on their wheels as he will beat them in a sprint anyway. Afterwards everyone can publicly criticise the tactics of the team riding away. It only doesn't work if some GC contenders thought that in such a situation, they would try to take time...

There’s been a lot of speculation about what caused the crash, and Hesjedal said he had his own ideas, but did not want to publicly declare what he saw in the bunch on Friday.

“The peloton just exploded,” he said. “In a flash, there were broken bikes, bodies flying, people falling on top of me. We were together as a team and when you get stuck in that crap, you all get it. We all went down at full speed. There was no time to react.”

apparently vigano was the first to go off the road and went
straight away into the ditch as he couldn't get to his brake
lever in time but he was in the ditch to the riders left yet
the garmin lads fell further up the road on the far right Question

video where chris horner explains what he experienced
happening with the peloton straight after the crash..

With the help of his teammates, Chris Horner chases back to the main field
after a massive crash takes out two-thirds of the Tour de France peloton.
seems it was every man for himself and bye bye to poor frank..
Boogerd_Fan

I was thinking something similar yesterday, with Shack riders splattered all over the mountain and Frank left without any support until he caught up to Gallopin's wheel.
