Stage 15 TdF: Mon, Jul 16th: Samatan - Pau 159km

A Strategic Place

A tip of the hat to provincial France, the France of the Tour. Our caravan will set off from Samatan, a large town with 2,200 inhabitants which is the main town of the Gers canton. It will probably be a calm start, as the stage is not particularly tough. A sprint finish would be the logical outcome, and I actually hope it happens, because pure sprinters will not get many chances to shine in this Tour. The finish in Pau will be beautiful, like always. This is the 64th time that the Tour visits this city, which is almost a record. Let us pay homage to this city, which we see as a stronghold and a strategic place.

Better bump this up.  Looks like a nice escape stage.

Surely the sprinters teams will fancy it today though, seeing as they even have a rest tomorrow?
Nolte

that would be my thinking also.
although considering that, they aren't letting a breakaway away. too strong riders and concern about bringing them back in the end?

It's looking a like a sprint for now. Presumably Sky are keeping the break under control for Cavendish.

In all the talk about Froome working for Wiggin's this year in return for support next year, where does that leave Cavendish year after year? Green and Yellow are seemingly a stretch (but the Olympics is maybe distorting things this year?), so will he keep missing out on the Green if Sky are focussed on Yellow in future years?
Fontfroide

Bernadeau and Chavanel and van Hummel out.

Getting to be a small peloton and we haven't even got to the last mountains.

5 more riders quit today...this will go down as the least competitive tour in my memory. Everybody has basically quit. No intermediate sprints, no battles for GC, KoM, Green, White or Team. They might as well declare this tour over and go home.

Sagan was autographs for the ladies this morning. No wonder he doesn't want Nibali cramping his style at the Sauna parties.

kathy

Break got over 8min now - pity my pick's not there!
Fontfroide

Sadly SM, doubt a sprint today.

Mountains still up for grabs SM.  Pinot can still catch Sagan, especially with some hills ahead.

And two big stages plus the TT, so don't give up yet.  Although you are probably right.

vandevelde's day?
Fontfroide

Dumoulin is the fastest normally.

Is it Fedrigo's birthday today?

30 November

Yes, I just checked.  It's actually Greipel's birthday.  Commentators are confusing me - always talking about the two of them in the same sentence -d on't know why.

Very beautiful travelogue today.
Quintessential rural France, in gorgeous weather...................but a cycle race it ain't.

Been sleeping badly, so I've been comatose for 100km, until now.
Fontfroide

Oh dear Huw.

Still there will be TWO finishes today.

And of course the Tour is actually funded by the French Tourist Board.  through a long secret connection.  You didn't know that?
HuwB

Of course, I picked Fedrigo for yesterday's stage. Embarassed
Fontfroide

Sorry, I forgot already who won.
Fontfroide

Britain 4 - France 4
MS

That may have been the worst sprint I have ever seen.
Fontfroide

I reckon Cav, my pick, won't even race at the end.  Who will?
HuwB

LOL: Voeckler whining about the non-French not working.
That's rich, coming from him.

Fedrigo nose how to win from a break. He's almost unbeakable. Razz
Fontfroide

Rather samish this "second finish".
smarauder68

CVV's only hope was to use his Time Trial power and surge away from Fedrigo in the final 3km and try to hold a gap....I'm surprised he opted for the sprint. He must have known he was always coming 2nd in a sprint. Poor tactics.
