Stage 13 TdF: Sat, Jul 14th: 3 Châteaux - Cap d'Agde 217km

Not a Piece of Cake

Another long stage. This one stretches 217 km from Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux to Cap d'Agde, where the bunch will embrace the Mediterranean. A treasure trove of beautiful TV pictures... and the prospect of a sprint finish, at least among those fast men who have managed not to lose contact on the climb up the Mont-Saint-Clair, 23 kilometres from the finish. In other words, the stage is not a piece of cake and the race could go crazy. Moreover, the wind is always a menace near the Mediterranean, and we already saw what it can do when the Tour visited La Grande Motte in 2009...

On the FP front I was thinking Bastille Day, might as well plump for a French breakaway, but then I looked at the profile. What were the organisers thinking?

Wind might have been a surprise tomorrow . . . cycled along the Med coast tonight and I was feeling it - biggest waves I've seen for quite a number of weeks. Wrong direction though (even if I am hundreds of kms away making it all irrelevant).

We seem to have wind from the northwest at about 15kph, with gusts a bit higher.  Not what we call serious wind around here.

Are you going to the stage, Fontfroide?  I did think about making the trip, but seems a bit much just to see them whizz up Mont St Clair once - might be different if it was the stage finish!

The Manx missile needs some points.  Where I live here the wind conditions are very much like what we're seeing today.  We don't have any real climbs for 150 miles, so gentle uphills + wind = good training.  At the Tour, the wind could help a Frenchman.

They don't seem to want the break to get away today!

split peloton!

Might have a bit of excitement to come home to then. In the playground at the moment.

Not a lot of action today.

But I live about 45 minutes north.  If they show some hills in the north, that's me.

Thought you might be there today!

Wiggins working for Eddy Bos...

Not much ado about nothing.
Rubbish weekend stage.
Wiggins looks incredibly strong but EBH was always going to come 3rd out of those 3.

I thought the last 25km or so was quite good... a few people trying to get away, and the sprint finish. Climb was interesting too - why on earth was Evans trying to attack?

What's up with Luisle Sanchez?

I beg @bradwiggins' pardon. He is the leader of the race so he and his team have the right to do whatever they want. See you.

post race interview he was bitching at Wiggo being the one who chased him down - which was expanded on by Breukink as being unsportsmanlike because EBH has been hammering on the front for 5 days, and would never in a million sprints contest with Sagan or Greipel.

I think he thought Sky were being a bit greedy, with the MJ trying to set up EBH for the win and not being content with 1-2 in GC.  He was clearly pissed off with Wiggins for making the catch and trying to set up their specialist climbing domestique for a flat stage win Wink
Fontfroide

When caught by the entire peloton which includes Wiggo out for a wee pipe blowout, LLS could be a bit more gracious.  And EBH might one day beat one of those guys.  Or might not.  One really does have a reasonable case for giving it a go.  Maybe EBH will be the eternal third of fourth in a sprint with a small group.  Maybe not.

I think this hides a huge amount of anti-Sky and anti-Anglo anger, prejudice or dislike.  But I guess we all knew that.
MS

Noticed LLS turn around and point/glare when he was caught. Seemed to be looking at Wiggins. Looks like turnabout is fair play as far as glares in within the peloton are concerned.
Severo

Personally I think Sanchez should be more concerned about why Rabobank are being useless.

I think they've been the worst team in the race, shortly ahead of Euskaltel and Lampre.
