Stage 10 TdF: Wed, Jul 11th: Mâcon - Bel.-s.-Valserine 195km

Break Away and Come Together

Jean-François Pescheux wrote:
Back to the mountains. On paper, the Grand Colombier is a monster. In my opinion, it is the toughest mountain in France, with sections at 12%. Nevertheless, its location 43 km from the finish changes the story altogether. Rather than a single devastating attack, I see a group of five or six strong riders break away and then come together before the finish. This is a classical but always exciting scenario, especially if one of the big names is missing from the breakaway. Look out just before the riders reach Bellegarde-sur-Valserine: we found a small bump which could very well make things easier for the finish line judge...

Fine day for a 5 man breakaway to mostly stay away. In the end I'll take Roy going it alone over the Columbier and then holding off his fellow escapees and the top 10 in GC.
kathy

I think someone like Nibali, Schleck, or even Zubeldia, Valverde or Samu will have a real go tomorrow to drop the top three!  Well, I hope so anyway - would make it more exciting!
ullrichfan

Erm... Samu?

No doubt they will make half hearted attempts on the Columbier, but between Froome and Wiggo, they'll always be reeled in quite easily in my opinion. Even if they lose a minute, they know they can use their superior Time Trial skills to real them back in on the descents and run to the finish.

The leading men in the tour know this and will probably decide to save their legs for another for a MTF.  Any efforts in Stage 10 will surely be wasted.

Look for a long break to succeed with guys over 10 minutes down on GC allowed to win the day.
ullrichfan

Looks like a stage for Pierrick Fedrigo to me: 80/1 at William Hill.

The one hope I have on a bit of life remaining in this is that Sky's training runs this year (PN, TdR, DL) were all finished on the equivalent of Stage 8. They still had nearly two weeks to go at that point on Sunday so if people take the fight to them, then funny things can start to happen in someone's head. . .
Fontfroide

Sorry Kathy, I really must change my bet.  I notice that they don't even GIVE odds on Rui Costa, so he must not have a chance.  Money talks.  Rather than double or triple up on the usual suspects, I am going to go for another totally ridiculous choice, but one that will PAY BIG if I win.

Johnny Hoogerland.

Thanks for changing my choice.

Why is there a lack of guesses today.  Maybe nobody has a clue.

+1

I like that Nibs has already gone public with his search for some cohorts for today's stage. Can't wait to see what they cook up to test the Sky train!

Mega break about 4 mins up the road:

Burghardt and Cummings (BMC); Popovych and Voigt (RNT): Arashiro (EUC): Martinez (EUS); Sagan (LIQ); Scarponi (LAM); Millar and Zabriskie (GRS); Peraud (ALM); Jeandesboz (SAU); Horrach (KAT); Casar, Hutarovich and Ladagnous (FDJ); Sanchez (RAB); Kroon and Morkov (STB); Fofonov and Grivko (AST); Devenyns (OPQ); and Gerrans and Goss (OGE)
Boogerd_Fan

sweet.. Goss and Sagan going to shoot out @ the intermediate sprint Very Happy
HuwB

Gap now 6 and a half minutes and they are on the 2nd cat, while we await live pictures.....
kathy

Who from the break has best chance of getting over the colombier ahead of the peloton? Scarponj, I suppose[/video]
HuwB

Lotto blow up much of the peloton and most of their own team.
EBH diesling along.
smarauder68

Who can hang with Scarponi today? Casar, Martinez and Sanchez?
Fontfroide

Or who can chase down LL?
smarauder68

Meanwhile in the Peleton, nothing from Nibali, Evans or Menchov. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....
kathy

Menchov won't do anything!
Severo

45km out is quite far to attack considering how much of the Tour is left.
kathy

Voeckler doing his thing again!
Fontfroide

And petit thibaut
smarauder68

Is Voeckler content with the KOM Jersey or will he go for the stage win too? You would think Scarponi would easily be the best climber of this group, but then again, Italians kinda suck in France, ever since the days of Elofantino.
kathy

Rogers has a problem
HuwB

Sagibili lighting it up!
Fontfroide

Anyone spotted EBH lately?
Fontfroide

That was something to watch.

EBH dropped half way up Colombier.

Sagan blows

So that's what spurred Nibali on!
Bartali

Come on Nibs ... you little shark you ....
Geraint

USPS train gradually hauling in the breakaway
Geraint

gap of 3 min with 20km left
smarauder68

I reckon Scarponi has to attack before the summit of the the last climb or he's gifting Sanchez the stage win.
Geraint

van Garden off the back
smarauder68

Nibali is effectively caught.

I thought they were to be referred to as UK Postal? Wink
berck

Voeckler will take the KOM jersey today
Geraint

UK Postal it is
berck

Jens making a move. Will it last?
smarauder68

Jens Voigt leading a 5 man chase that could catch the leaders.
Fontfroide

Geraint wrote:

Yeah, I thought if you want to gratuitously connect Sky as a team of dopers or boring cyclists, you are meant to say UK postal.  Brings the Queen into it.
smarauder68

VanDenBroek could take Menchov's 5th spot.
Geraint

Vogt makes his move, what a great rider he has been blah blah

Technically it should be the Royal Mail

Voigt makes the catch...and pushing for the stage win. Sanchez or Voigt?

Off-topic, but wouldn't a "UK Postal" team finish today's stage tomorrow or in the wrong town?
berck

Well, it lasted long enough to get up to the leading four.
Geraint

Franck Shleck said it is impossible for him to finish podium now without Andy to pull for him

Voeckler looks strongest

Laughing You maybe right. I can't remember who referred to them as UK Postal a few stages back. Just seemed to be a better fit than USPS, who can also deliver a day late or wrong location... Wink

Anyone pick him?
Geraint

The little Franco-German is completely knackered. All the housewives of France are swooning.   Sad
kathy

Don't think so
berck

I don't think so, but I think Slap picked Scarponi

EDIT: Nope, Slap picked Scarponi in Stage 7.
berck

I think we all got skunked today Sad

Great ride and effort by Voeckler!

TV: "People say its acting. I dont care what people say about me"

Very Happy   Very Happy
HuwB

VDB sort of got it right, where Nibali sort of got it wrong.
Thanks to Vince and Pete for making it entertaining.
Evans times his sprint to perfection.Rolling Eyes

Voeckler the consummate con man.
Fontfroide

Geraint, he has never been the housewives' choice, but the choice of ALL French people.  Not really a lady's choice.  Just a bit of cultural info.
Geraint

Vogt or TV who has the more enormous heart? Who  has the larger, rounder gonads? Who inspires more journalistic cliches?  Very Happy

When is France going to make a GC contender?
Boogerd_Fan

What was the biggest gap that Nibs got? 45s?

He should've gone when JVDB did. To claw that back on the final descent rather than the one before.

Kudos for trying that though!
smarauder68

Home road advantage plays a role once in awhile. I can't help but think Voeckler woulda faded if this were the Giro or Vuelta.  And Scarponi never woulda lost this in Italia.

Scarponi's gotta be kicking himself a bit...He beats Voeckler 9 outta 10 times up that finishing hill. Today was the 1 when we he didn't.
HuwB

Sagan on Nibali:
"He had to try. If you don't try, you can't win."

Hope he and VDB didn't go too deep and don't suffer tomorrow, so they can animated the stage.

I can't see anything coming early from other quarters.

I get the impression that we will have Conservative Cadel, until he's got clear podium daylight, by hanging with the Sky pair, then hoping they will fade come the Pyrenees.
Nolte

good for nibali for trying although you get the real sense that he went on the descent too early. what's the real target for nibali on these descends is to make wiggins and sky make a mistake. that i feel is the goal.

i have the feeling that if scarponi tried to follow voeckleur's final attack, they would have started looking at each other and jens voight would have had the win. egoi martinez should really have followed voigt down the climb Smile
Boogerd_Fan

on all the descents Nibs just needs to go hell for leather if he wants to force some mistakes... but this move on the climb to Colomber... probably would've been better played on the Moinard as per JVDB's move, which stuck for 30 or so seconds.

Shame he didn't stay clear until the final descent, otherwise that lead could've been increased by the finish line!

Had Nibs pulled that much back today, it would've made tomorrow very interesting.

There doesn't look like many flat valley roads between the climbs tomorrow, so it should mean for more of the same. Providing they're not too burned out today.
Boogerd_Fan

btw - i'm officially giving up on Gesink.

Even Sagan has a better GC placing.
kathy

Just had a thought - I've just seen Sylvester Szmyd name in the list of results today.  He's usually leading Liqui up the mountains, but he doesn't seem to be doing much in this race.  What's wrong with him?

my guess would be that he burnt himself out in the giro pacing for basso.
Slapshot 3

Can we call Sky "Going Postal"....bring some Pratchettesque humour in as well?????

Wish I'd Changes to Thomas today, I had a thought about it overnight!!!

Laughing

Just got in, late night.  I love those videos with the funny voices.  Apparently if you can type you can make a video.

As for France and GC.  I don't think they could generate more print if they had a Tour contender than they do now, lamenting the lack of a Tour winner.  They are so sad they don't have one.  Maybe one of these young guys might come through.  Maybe not.

HuwB wrote:

I thought he had got rid of that stereotype last year for sure.  Oh well.  I guess things have ben setup so he will have to prove it again.  I sure hope you are wrong and Cadel makes a move.  But then I hope Nibali will succeed and VDB and even Frank Schleck.  Someone has to make a move or we won't be happy bunnies.  Menchov?  they cannot all just wait and hope Wiggo will blow up.  And Froome.

They did try a bit today.  There was also some interesting racing.  Even by the con-man.  I would never have put money on him to win from that group of four, or five in the end.

Well done.  YOur team is fourth, nice work.

I, on the the hand, jokered S Sanchez today.
smarauder68

Watching a replay of stage 10, as Nibali was reeled in after his brief escape...it occurred to me that Nibali didn't even really fight. Just rode a soft tempo...and i'm thinking, where's the fight??? Where's the grit???

I'm left thinking Nibali is another in a long line of Italian hopes (Cunego comes to mind), who are solid all-around cyclists but lack the cutting edge and tenacity. It can't be taught.

Laughing  I heard about him playing 'water boy' today for Wiggo.
Boogerd_Fan

His attack relied on getting enough time on the descent of Colomber to ride over the Richemond and then kick on again on the next descent.
Once the gap was coming down on the Richemond climb, there was not much point to power on (still with 2km to the summit), as likely the attack would be fruitless even if he put more effort in.

Damage caused today – a bit psychological dig at Sky – “catch me if you can” descending. There will be more of that today.
Wiggo knew it only too well, hence his finger wagging at the finish line. That kind of attitude is surely only going to rile Nibs to try even harder surely?

The interesting thing today is that after 2HC mountains, Nibs can dig again, use the Mollard as a spring board to try something on the final MTF climb.
Personally, I would like to see JVDB attack over the top of the Glandon/Croix de Fer – but likely he’ll also wait until the Mollard.
I’m also interested to see how Sky manage to keep this together over 2HC climbs and THEN still have something left to dela with Mollard and Toussiere.

I did have to chuckle at the quote attributed to Nibali after the stage yesterday: “Wiggins looked at me at the finish and I really did not like the way he did it." He'll soon be complaining that Wiggo gets more sweets off Mum than he does and that it's "not fair" if he's not careful. I know all too well how things end when kids get a funny look off a classmate/sibling/GC rival.

Surely Nibs knows enough cycling history to appreciate the difference between a look and "The Look". Smile
gerry12ie

I liked the way he trotted out the 'disrespect' line true Italian style
Boogerd_Fan

An Italian faffing about disrespect at the Tour?

It's all happening!

nah, Wiggo is not doing himself any favours by acting like a total prick. There is focus on the prize, but he's acting like a malnourished OCD retard.

For sure Wiggo seems to have gone all football yob but really, a Sicilian complaining about hand gestures??

if wiggles* biggest problem during the tour de france is people not being nice on twitter, he's in a very enviable position for a cyclist.

*i prefers wiggles. this is a futurama reference.*
* please don't read anything into my use of the asterix at the end of wiggles name.*
