Solvang Spring DoubleI did the Solvang Spring Double Century (miles) this past Saturday. Turned out to be much faster than I expected. We did the first 100 miles in 5:12 ride time and 5:54 over all. We averaged 19.2 mph for that distance in ride time.
One of our group riders started feeling bad about then. We covered the last 93 miles (only 193 total) in 5:11 ride time and 7:07 overall (17.9 mph average in ride time). We took longer at the breaks to help him recover on the return. We probably could have kept the same average on the way back, but we wanted to help him finish. It was his first double.
It had a lot of little hills, but there was really only one serious climb at the end. Overall, it was about 7,500 ft of climbing. If you look at the profile on-line, it looks more daunting than it really was.
Weather was absolutely beautiful. Temperatures got maybe as high at 75F inland. In the high 60's near the coast. Many beautiful flowers along the way. My only complaint about the ride is that there just weren't enough porta potties at the break points. Seemed like we had a 10 minute wait minimum at nearly every one.
Here is a picture we took at Morro Bay around mile 104.

Big thumbs up! That looks to be a great ride, maybe next year depending on the dates, MrB will come ride it. This year wouldn't have worked as he was doing the MS150.
What a beautiful day!

Bartali,
I'm the one closest to the camera. Thanks too!
BB,
Thanks. It was definitely a great day. Not too hot, not too cold. We woke up the next morning to high fog and some mist. The day we rode was perfect. It has been known to rain at times on this ride.
TT,
I am and so is is my friend in the red. I'm still working off some pounds. My Asian friend is about right. Only 150lbs. He could possibly loose a few, but we are all getting old and its harder to drop the weight. Heck, I'm the only one under 50 in the group, and that's not by much.

If it just wouldn't get in the way while I pedal it would be powerful
Now, if you tell me you've hit over 60mph, then I will concede.
In our group, its between me and big red. Although, my Asian friend can fly too. My Armenian friend is a bit more reserved.

Oh, I forgot to mention. From a style stand point, I was wearing white socks.

My record is the same (technically 59.6). That's why I mentioned 60 because I knew it would best me. I know though, that those speeds take special road to get up that fast. Its not uncommon for me to get just over 50 on some of the routes I ride. Others, I may not ever see anything above 30 because the downhill is just too dangerous.
Sounds like you can fly pretty well there red.

6-8 mph going up 50-59 mph going down says everything about my physique! Can't climb for toffee but coming down there is no finer a descender...
