Rio OlympicsAs much as I hate the IOC for being corrupt, materialistic etc, I do like the idea of the Rio games. Although, I wonder at what cost to the population of Rio itself. Rio's social problems are not exactly few either... should be an interesting 7 years.Amused at the accusations on some US blogs of decades of anti-Americanism by the IOC - seems a bit far-fetched given the US has hosted more games than any other country since 1948. Thoughts on the games? Thoughts on the likely RR course? |

When the commonwealth games came to Manchester, Moss Side and Hulme were cleared and the residents sent to sink estates in north manchester like Milnrow and Langley.
Will the people of the Rio Favelas be deported into the jungle, or are they just going to become 'Disparu' as is traditional in South America? How will a police force more used to anally raping children with soldering irons and generally brutalising its populace, cope with giving directions to tourists laced with dollars and dripping in consumer electronics? Bit too real for me - I think I'll give the 2018 games a miss. |

Brazil is also hosting the football World Cup in 2014, Isn't it?
I expect they'll try to use as much of the existing stadia as possible. Rio hosted the Pan-Am Games a couple of years back, so they have a starting point. Proposed location for the RR is Flamengo Park, but I have no idea what that entails. |

You forgot to add fat and out of shape and rich. With some exceptions or course. Golf. But, follow the money. Pretty soon, Formula One will be an Olympic Sport. | ||

I'm not a big fan of golf either. But I do think there are a lot of stupid(er?) events that shouldn't be there: Equestrian - I thought these were supposed to be human events, though I know squat about it. Gymnastics - Unbelievably difficult and requiring a tremendous amount of physical talent, but an event where the winner is decided based on judging is suspect. Figure skating falls in this category too. Curling - Do I need to say anything about this asinine event? Come on! Table tennis and badminton - Why not lawn darts and croquet? This is the olympics for crying out loud! Any Damn thing were you lay your fat ass on a sled and go down a prebuilt course needn't be in the Olympics. Yeah, the Olympics has definitely evolved into some odd attractions. Despite all that, still mostly fantastic competition. |

I see no reason whatsoever for professional sports to be in what is supposed to be an amateur event? Football, golf, rugby, the road events, ice hockey, tennis etc should not be included - or if included the participants shouldn't be professionals for whom it is 'just another event'. Golf has basically been included to appease Nike who of course have a lot of money invested in the walking billboards. To be honest I would kick out athletics because it is such a farce when it comes to doping. Getting rid of sports with judging - fair enough - but what about sports where human officials are involved? |

Unfair to the amateurs, that's for sure. At their best, they'll be able to take out a few pros, but never end up at the top. Once again professional sports screws everything up, but it is good for the Olympics to represtent the best athletes in the world. The value of a gold medal is watered down for a professional because it is just another event, but for an amateur it is also watered down because they know there are plenty out there that could have beaten them. Aye, doping. No cure, even for amatuers. One day everyone on earth will be implanted with some sort of computer chip which will track our location, vital signs, what we're doing, what is ingested into our bodies, etc... then cheaters will be caught. I can't wait!
The human factor in officiating distorts the outcome to some degree. Basketball comes to mind. I don't think that all the sports with 'flaws" that could create a certain level of unfairness should be eliminated, just gives me a little bit more appreciation for sprinting and jumping and throwing stuff. There's nothing to argue about there. Well, except doping..... |

For most people in the West, the summer Olympic Games is swimming and athletics, with some other stuff thrown in. If athletics goes, then you've effectively got the world swimming championships and a dull second week.
Table tennis and badminton are very popular in the East, so are unlikely to get the chop. I agree that a lot of the new additions (golf and tennis in particular) should be ditched. I like Rugby 7s, though. It will fill the main stadium for the first week, is easy to understand and always exciting (unlike the 15 man version on both counts) and is easy for the minor/poorer nations to put together a decent team. |
