Ribs FracturedHad a bad crash today and have fractured several ribs on the right side! Rode too close to a sawhorse on the side of the road and caught my bars. I went down fast and hard. It's going to be very difficult to work tomorrow. Racing will be out of the question for a few weeks. I now join the ranks of the walking wounded. Fair amount of pain, too. This completely sucks. Couldn't have happened at a worse time, really.

I broke ribs and the clavicle about this time five years ago. Its not a great time to do so. Fortunately, its just your ribs and you should heal a bit faster.
I'll relay the same information I got from my Ortho during the process. Eat lots of protein. Its the key to building the bones again. Of course he didn't tell me this until two weeks into the process and he wasn't satisfied and how my clavicle was healing.
One thing I remember, it hurts to laugh or sneeze.

Ouch!!!!!!
Hope you recover quickly Cape.
I "crushed" my ribs after someone crashed into me whilst skiing this year - bloomin' sore and they're now indented/deformed.

Capie,
What you did is known in the cycling world as a "Hincapie". As in "Did you see CR hincapie off the saw horse?"
Now if you had clipped a saw horse and then fallen into a ditch it would have been known as a "George Hincapie".
However, the be careful since the syntactical form of 'Hincapie' is irregular. So if you snap your handle bars off, hit a saw horse, and then go into a ditch you must use the phrase 'Triple Hincapie'.

CR.. what a bit of bad luck.. get well asap..
as long as your were wearing your helmet and didn't get your bell rung..
as crashes resulting in concussions.. an injury that truly never heals.. are worse..
as I know too well from crashs/falls I had from before bike helmets were worn..
btw.. always ride at least 2 feet from the edge of the road and
for a while avoid taking deep breaths and laughing out loudly

Don't think its an Americanism after all, pardon my ignorance, I am a mechanical engineer (clanky) type chap, a "chippie" (carpenter) etc would you use one of these http://www.nextag.co.uk/saw-horse/zzukzB1z0--search-html

That does hurt! I am eating protein at every meal. Of course, I treat rib fractures routinely, but I tend to turn into an absolute idiot when I am the patient. Any and all information welcome. Thanks, berck. Today was a hard day.

The odds were against us, bb. I can't imagine what he's going through, given the pain I'm in.
I'll be racing in 2-4 weeks, though. I'm going riding tonight. Fu** it. I can still ride.

Time heals all. My healing time will be reduced with all sorts of therapeutic methods I have planned, including massage.

You should have been. I use arnica, buffered aspirin, L-glutamine and a lot of other stuff. I am sleeping okay once I get properly positioned.

No deformity for me (other than my usual looks), fortunately. Ouch is right!

No concussion. Landed squarely on my right arm with my right elbow tucked, which in turn fractured my ribs. If I forget where the ribs are broken, I simply place my arm at my side and just under the elbow, voila! All I needed was two more inches away from the sawhorse. It was a stupid mistake made when I was overtired. Glad I wasn't in a car.

I don't know if this qualifies as inspiring, but I've heard that Podolski may play tomorrow even though he has a fractured rib.
Good luck and a speedy recovery to you, Cape!

You'll be fixed in no time, Cape. Just don't sneeze!
Incidentally, I've discovered I've been walking (and cycling) around with a broken arm for the last five weeks. It seems I fractured my radial head when crashing on the Tour of Ireland. But it appears to be pretty much fixed now, and there don't seem to be any bone fragments in there, so we're just going to leave it alone.

Thanks again. It's much worse at night and in the morning. Has to do with low HR and muscle cooling/tightness. Only hurts when I breathe, laugh, cough, sneeze, bend, twist, lift, reach, push and pull. So, as long as I don't do any of those, I feel okay.

WHat a year. Just re-reading all this. Seven rib fractures. A low back muscle tear. Over 30 races and one more cyclocross race to go. Why did I take up this sport again?
In fact, how did each of us get into this sport? Time for a new thread.
