Rest Day! July 17 2012

Yawn!
MAILLOT JAUNE

Has anyone seen the Devil (Didi Senft) yet? Or is he waiting to make his appearance in the Pyrenees?

He's been ill and had surgery, I believe.
Told to rest and not go to the Tour by his Doctors.
Nevertheless, he was on the Kitzbuhel Horn during the Tour of Austria,
early in the month. Wink

Did the French police get up early, this morning? Razz
Fontfroide

I swear I saw him once on the tour, maybe twice.  But I might be an unreliable witness.  Or more accurately, becoming unreliable.  But I have not seen him every day, like I used to.

Also heard he was ill, like Huw.
Fontfroide

I am going swimming this afternoon, or riding a bike, or anything except staying in a darkened room.

No blog tonight either.

But bring on the next two days.  I am ready.

Didn't ASO sort of turn against him as he was getting commercial backing and was wearing sponsored clothing so the "ambush marketing" was not acceptable - TV cameras would cut away from him etc.?

I'd heard something like that too..... however, Mrs Ventoux was delighted that he was happy to pose for a photo with her some years ago now.... and, most appropriately, on Mont Ventoux  Very Happy

On a dull rest we might be forgiven for mulling over that this might be the worst Tour since 2005 or 2002 or 1996 or 1990... fill in the gaps.  Regardless, it has been dreadfully lifeless with only Sagan to light it up...
Nolte

interesting, with the 6 withdrawals yesterday, this brings the number of riders left in the tour to 156, less than 2010 and 2011 and one more than 2009 (when 180 started)

Teams from the Netherlands have been particularly decimated - Vacansoleil - 4 riders, Dundalk Argos - 5 riders and Rabobank - 4

Fontfroide took a photo of me with Didi in Montpellier three or four years ago as well.  Very pleasant man (Didi and FF!!)

Excellent Ventoux!

And Kathy, picture? Did you post it? Inquiring minds want to see it. Smile (or should this be directed at FF)
kathy

OK, found it!  Don't all laugh at once!

KarenP

Wondeful, Kathy!
berck

Great picture Kathy!

What's the Devil's first language? What's his story anyway?
MAILLOT JAUNE

Here's his wiki entry:

Love the pic kathy - great!
kathy

Thank you!  Think Didi's German, but he did speak English - and French!
Fontfroide

As far as riders dropping out…

1948 44 out of 120  36.67%
1998 (Festina and TVM) 96 out of 189  50.79%
2003  147 left, huge heat wave.

167 left last year
The record was 2010 with 170 finishing, apparently.  86.87%

This year, 156 left out of 198  78.78%  Five stages to go, including the big mountains.

So they say in today's paper, if I copied the figures correctly.
Fontfroide

Just for the record, although I do agree some stages are a little slow, and I do agree that it wold be more interesting withAndy (in form) and Alberto, I don't think is has been as boring as some of you.

I really enjoy the continentals, the old guard having to deal with Sky and Wiggins.  It is hard for them.  All Wiggo has to do to win their hearts and training habits is to win tomorrow or the next day.

Notice I have not mentioned anything illegal, just pretended that everyone is riding on water.

Frank Schleck positive for Xipamide (banned diuretic)

My understanding is he's German too (which Bio's link confirms). This reminds me of something.

If Didi would be considered multi-lingual, and somebody knowing two languages as bi-lingual. What would you call somebody that knows only one language?
Severo

Monolingual.

Technically, yes. But the correct answer is American. Wink
Severo

Or, indeed, British, or probably anyone who speaks English as a first language Sad

That'll teach him to complain about not being paid!!   Shocked
MAILLOT JAUNE

I think he took it deliberately, not to enhance performance but just to get kick out as he was missing his wee brother Andy!

Nah. It's going to be like Prison Break. Andy will walk into the UCI foyer and transfuse himself in broad daylight.
MAILLOT JAUNE

Schleck has requested his B Sample to be tested and if that's positive he'll claim that he was poisoned!!!!!  Rolling Eyes

Words fail me!
Fontfroide

For me the most important fact about this latest Schleck story is ….

That there is an excellent stage on TV now.  Good riddance to Frank, innocent of guilty in the end.  Those Schlecks have not contributed anything to my happiness as a cycling fan in years.
MAILLOT JAUNE

I'm with you there ff. I know they both made it to the podium last year but I just do not rate them at all. They add nothing to the peloton.

The Dolphins did it.

Isn't he going to claim that it was "Spanish Beef" that did him in? Wink

maffy

lovely didi pic kathy.

always figured he'd welded up a tardis or something, as he seems to be fond of the horn. might have mentioned it aforenow.

2010

2011

2012

he'd turned up at letour in 2010 by st10, it's on the bigpicture. someone should freezeframe through bruxelles-spa to check for evidence of timeshifting. maybe he just really blames wiggly orange. andy hamilton for doppelganger?
Biosphere

Kathy, been meaning to post (and bearing in mind that I'm of the school of thought that thinks men in neon green and pink lycra can actually look fashionable) that it's a lovely photo and you look very well in it. The devil gets all the best ladies - or something like that Smile
