MJM, I believe Piti is not allowed in Italy, or am I wrong?
anyway, i hope birillo or nibs can make it!

If Valverde is cleared by TAS, I can't see how they can prevent him riding in Italy. I could foresee a case going to the European court if CONI tried that! And if TAS do clear him, then Valverde might - just might - choose to ride the Giro to stick two fingers up at CONI. I doubt it though

Oooh another early one. Question is, who will ride. They had Bertie on, yesterday an he had this to say:
"The Giro is suited to me: the time trial, the mountain time trial, stages to Plans de Corones, Zoncolan, Gavia and Mortirolo,"
Of course, what he doesn't say, is whether he is even contemplating the ride.
Has to be said, the Giro IS ideal prep for the Tour, if it doesn't kill you, as the route planning is so similar.
Other than that, I'd go for a man in pale green, just no sure which....

That would mean Dertie changing his whole training/race program for the season. I am not sure three days in Holland in early may is his idea of a good time.

But on the plus side if AC rode and won it, then he would be collecting a lot of publicity off the texan.
What has AC got so far, 4 GT's I think and the possibility of starting the TDF as a 5 time GT winner and the media hype, that he could make it 6 in July.
I think it would be worth while to do that and have pharmstrong on the back foot from the start of July and the pressure to prove he is not a Has Been.
So Juicy and I do hope AC rides and wins the Giro like the other Spaniard did (3 times) as preperation for the TDF.

Apparently not

Armstrong neither (or is that old news?)

reading 2nd link properly, it's hard to know what's actually factual and what's speculation. The headline is unsupported by the text.

I went for Nibali, assuming that Contador will not be targeting the Giro. Menchov and Pellizotti should push him close though...

Bartali

I can't believe no one is throwing Basso into the equation. Two top 5 GT placings in his first year back is encouraging IMO. All he has to do is recover his ITT form and he'll be a real force again.

I hate to keep dogging you on this issue, Bartali, but it would be borderline criminal not to give Pellizotti leadership next Giro. What else does this guy have to do after the last two Giros? He was clearly the stronger of the two this year and unless something startling happens between now and May, it would really be a mistake to make Basso the leader for the Giro. What we saw from Basso in the Giro and the Vuelta is what you're going to get from Basso, post-Puerto. And I don't think the parcours of the 2010 Giro suit him well, at all.
Honestly, Basso would be my number four choice out of all the Liquigas GT riders if you lined all of them up.

I agree with this. He seems reluctant to get back on the sauce, this will keep him from becoming a true champion!

I think that this would create a very exciting situation as well, but due to Sastre and Menchovs' performances in the Tour this year, I'm afraid that racing to win the Giro may be detrimental to peak performance in July.
Added: I want Alberto in top form in July!

This is the worst kind of spamming as it's stuck in the thread at least when they create a new topic you can ignore it.

The change cannot come soon enough. Having to scroll through half a page of his shit is far worse than avoidable threads.
Has the potential to destroy all debate.
Will Cadel have to ride the Giro, since he's had a nice invite and what will they pay him to appear?

I voted for Basso. Not because he'll rediscover his ITT form but after a year of being a clean(ish), not-quite contender, he'll bow to the inevitable and start thinking about doping properly again. Only thinking, mind, but he went PDQ on thoughts alone in the old days.
