Prologue TdF: Sat, June 30: Liege - Liege 6.4km

I'll start the Tour stage thread ball rolling, but I hope folks aren't going to rely on me doing the lot.

it's what? 6 corners?

I really think Sagan is going to surprise. He has announced in Slovak News that this is one of his objectives for the Tour.

Probably Leaky want to get him in yellow... and he'll be ideally placed to milk the publicity the team want, for at least the first week. So a  prologue win for Sagan, or at least, close enough so he can strike on stages 1 and 3 and get Yellow.

Fingers Crossed!

I reckon Tony Martin can get himself into yellow. Which other sprinters stand a chance?   This woulda been perfect for Hushovd.

I would be happy enough to do do some stages but this time of the year is busy for me at work (someone has to keep the Irish farmer in bearings and chain - it is the only industry we have left), maybe the third week would suit if thats ok?
smarauder68

This board is dead...Where's MsJM to come after my insidious FP's? Is he/she serving a suspension?

Vanished. Not just here, but in other places, too.

Your FPs look fine to me; maybe a little on the slow side......but not if it's wet. Besides, you have 20 names in your top 10! Laughing
All bases covered, I'd say.

Oh and yeah, the boards are pretty slow.

Maybe these days, we are all too mellow? Wink

I'm happy enough to do the whole thing. I'll more or less add one a day now and we're a week ahead of schedule now.

Actually, I'll do another burst this weekend as next Sunday I'm in the Juras Smile

Hopefully with my new bike which I collect tomorrow Very Happy

Any theories on this?  Maybe Sooty tracked her down?
Slapshot 3

I believe MJM is now resident in another country and does not post in any of the usual haunts...pity at this time of year!

Kicked off 20 minutes ago. Current top 4

1. Andriy Grivko (Astana) 7:28
2. Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEdge) +0:14
3. Tom Veelers (Argos-Shimano)  +0:19
4. Martin Velits (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) +0:21
HuwB

Dry and sunny. Quite a surprise, given the forecast for the coming week.
Suggests winning time will be sub 7'-20".

Now, will DH mention the latest LA developments? He's only got to survive about 100 hours of commentary. Rolling Eyes
Boogerd_Fan

Sagan @ 16:50 CET

ready to make history?
this is a really big day for Slovakia - even the national STV2 station has bought the TV package from ASO to broadcast live coverage.

I think his chance comes tomorrow. Today is about him getting close enough to be in with a shout. I think scratch

I reckon he will tuck his Lancelogue in around nice dull stage 5... Saint-Quentin might be very apt Wink
smarauder68

Weatherman let me down.

How many will beat Grivko's time?  I reckon about 7.

Nobody talking up Tony Martin on the NBC coverage....they think it's coming down to Sagan vs Cancellara.
maffy

at least dh is not shooting his mouth off without thinking again in his passionate inimitable "passionate" way (just like tms, donchakno)
managed three whole minutes of the pees before going back to fr2. cummings rides for teamskyteam it seems. shame, as imlach and boardman could do a good job.

note to self - record itv4 and watch the bits around the adverts.
kathy

OUt to lunch - so only an hour late for the coverage!
gerry12ie

Liege looks well in the sun.  The Palais is impressive for sure and Guillemins is a fine train station.  Sprinters doing well - Greipel dying after 6k was mildly amusing
HuwB

So far, I have to say that RSNT are looking pretty good for a bunch of ancients.
Mind you, the race is a bit longer than 6kms.
Nice ride from EBH.
Winning time around 7'-15", I reckon.
Biosphere

TV has been commandeered by little people. Will kick them off for the pointy end. Must say I'm disappointed that my tough love approach to instilling respect and admiration for the bike is not paying dividends Wink

Click to make little people a bit bigger
HuwB

Chavanel takes it down to 7'-20".

Didn't everyone know he was a he?  He still is working as an academic, as far as I know.

Noticed that Chavenel didn't get a mention in your top twenty.

Cute little guys.  They ride yet?
kathy

In Brad's interview, he was a bit ambivalent as to whether he wanted to win the prologue.  I guess S'tky would prefer he didn't!

He's ihn Romania according Facebook page.
maffy

the old keep the show-off red tyres spick and span dilemna. not riding in britain prolly helps, but i used to struggle with the catnip and fish placement. did the new bike arrivee?
gerry12ie

Bit of a stinker from Rolland
Bartali

Nice pic Bio ... Cute lads.
Biosphere

Later for new bike. Italian shop times are 4 to 8 for pomeriggio/sera.

So Gilbert looking like he has notions about yellow tomorrow.
Fontfroide

Glad I didn't put Levi on any of my teams.  One would think he would have done better.

I did consider him, but he's 38 now and no longer has access to JBs anti ageing serum.
Fontfroide

Zabriskie's gear looks like it was designed by Marvel Comics.  Reminds of of Captain America, the original.
Beasley

Good time by Froome - 7'29"
HuwB

Sagan almost crashes in the Prologue.
What would Boogie do? Laughing

Shocker from Captain America.
Beasley

Half a minute down for Frank. He's got work to do!

Mechanical for Tony Martin.
Fontfroide

Amazed no one has yet beat Sylvain.  Someone will, but still.
Fontfroide

Watching Martin's bike wobble under the power of his last metres was awesome.
maffy

sylvchav - didn't you watch the 4 jours?
Bartali

Nice ride by Menchov
kathy

Good time for Menchov
Bartali

Well well well ... looked like Wiggins tried to throw that on the line!
Bartali

What's TV wearing on his head?  A giant melon??
HuwB

Well, well, Wiggo
6 seconds down..........to up.
Bartali

Nice ride Nibs .... steady as she goes.
smarauder68

Shame for Martin...he would have won by 5 secs easy.
maffy

not vs canc, sm
Bartali

Ouch!!!  The big swiss keeps is 100% prologue record!
Beasley

That was swift...
kathy

And El Spartaco shows them how it's done!
smarauder68

Teejay into White? Great ride for him.
maffy

meh.teejay at 100 was the only bet i took today. yep. good ride.
smarauder68

Teejay with a KOM and White Jersey before hitting 25. Maybe he is the next big thing...
smarauder68

How many secs did Martin lose with his mechanical? 30ish?  I think he woulda pipped Spartacus. Certainly no worse than 2nd.  Looks like Fabian keeps yellow for 7 days now.
HuwB

smarauder68 wrote:

Well, it has been said, but he's still coming up a little short in the big mountains.
Time will tell.

Big losers today: Samu and Schleck.
In the balance: Gesink, VDV, Levi etc.
...............Cadel Evans, Nibali....................
In the pound seats: Wiggins and Menchov.
smarauder68

A shocker from Samu...lost 43 secs in just 4 miles.
Beasley

smarauder68 wrote:

Less.

All told, inc. slowing down, the bike change & getting back up to race pace, probably about 15-20s.

He would have edged Wiggins, but not Fab Can.
Severo

From Evans: Valverde +18s, Sami Sanchez +23s Cobo +27s

Dan Martin and Nico Roche 55th and 56th separated by just 1s.

heart in mouth moment indeed... but he saved it well... 24s off yellow.. i guess a stage win tomorrow is the best hope now, to get his tour back on track. The MJ is probably too far out of reach.
Bartali

An aging Basso 1s off Levi and faster than Valverde and Samu???  Interesting.
maffy

to be fair, bart, basso did surprisingly well in the giro prologue and even his most ardent admirers probably wouldn't go so far as to suggest that the resulting three weeks were made particularly interesting by the phenomenon. no reason it might not work here, though. nice end of page post. Cool

more impressive was the way that the itv4 highlights package made it seem as though the pees were talking some sort of sense.
MS

I remember back in 2003, Gibo did a top 15 in the prologue and people started thinking he might be able to make good on his promises.

Keep these prologue results in perspective.

I think there's a general trend towards overlooking Hesjedal a bit too easily. I'd be surprised if he won, but I'd be just as surprised at some of the above.

Very Happy

They were talking some utter drivel in the live coverage.

Good to note that Gary Imlach mentioned the USPS/doping/Lance situation, if only in passing, in the highlights programme.

Good work by Wiggo. It's hard to take a man seriously with sideburns like his, but he's going to be very hard to beat this year.
Bartali

At the risk of being berated by those who still think the BLRC was a bit avant garde, I hope that if Wiggins wins this thing it doesn't end up being the most boring Tour ever!

Hesjedal?  Umm .... I'll be surprised if he does anything this Tour.
maffy

touche. Laughing  was wiffling on in a pub last monday night about jf bernard's headbands and the significance of yellow and green caps myself. black alpaca for the win. bloke in a pub falling out of a timewarp shoehorning his own hobbyhorse into a stable it doesn't want to go in? blame beer at £1.80 a pint. reckon saur or argos have a hamper full of yellow magic hats in the luggage?

it's tough to see how a wiggins win with the obvious tactics could be anything but a little bit dull. all depends on how ambitiously attacky the attackers are. enjoy a bit of downhill attacking myself. here's hoping. there are four blokes who won the last gt they rode riding. it was only the prologue, as ms said.
