Poor Nelson Mandela

I really do feel sorry for him - one of the most important figures of the twentieth/twenty-first century. And what does he get from Britain for his 90th birthday? Amy Crackhouse, the Sugarbabes, X-Factor winner and Johnny fucking Borell.

That is like opening a present on your birthday only to find that you've been given a steaming turd.

I think that anyone appearing at a concert like this should be made to take a history test just so we can be sure that they actually know who Nelson Mandela is and what he did. I really do think that if you were to ask some of the people who performed tonight if they know about Nelson Mandela your question would be met by silence and furtive looking at the press agent to help them with the answers.

not great celebs i agree.
long walk to freedom my fave book of all time

So I guess the memory of Steve Biko might be even less important to that crowd?  I will try to have faith in the goodness of people regardless.

Absolutely MrsJ,

We just wheel Nelson out to dilute the history - hands up who's heard of Robert Sobukwe or his 'one day of action'?

When Mandela dies, there will be a bloodbath in RSA.

+1+1+1
Total agreement Missus.  It says something about the state of things when worthless celebrities are presented to us alongside such a great man.  I remember when the Spice Girls and Nelson Mandela "got together".... even now I'm still lost for words to describe my state of disbelief.

Far more appropriate would be a birthday celebration concert from Africa - with a line up of African music legends.  Not only would the music be 50 times more real, but these musicians would most certainly know who Nelson Mandela is.

Still, he did have Eddy Grant to tap his feet to...

You can always try and ignore the music and the gushing tributes, but pretending to be interested in Mr. Brown's small talk, that must be tough at the age of 90  Confused

I feel sorry that after having spent the best years of his life in prison, having strived for peace and tolerance, he gets a load of bandwagon jumping politicians and celebrities. Without a doubt there are people like Peter Gabriel who have a very long track record of political activism, but can someone remind me again what the Sugarbabes political activism was?

I wonder how much the promoters made for this concert?

I find the idea of rich pop stars telling me to contribute to charity to be more than a little bit hypocritical. As someone said at the time of live aid - if these pop stars gave their money to charity rather than to flunkies and dealers then the problem would be solved a whole lot faster.

Maybe he enjoyed it? Strange as it seems he claimed meeting the Spice Girls was one of the greatest moments of his life. I'm certainly not going to tell him that he should be listening to African music to enjoy himself though.

I've more sympathy with the moans about celebrities, but that's got to be offset against raising awareness/funds for Madela's charity. These things are always shades of grey. Provided the likes of the Sugarbabes aren't pocketing a wedge on the night, then I don't feel too negative about it, but either way they'll benefit through increased record sales. Hmmm.  Confused

The question is why are the Sugarbabes performing there? Is it because they have a track record of political activism or because they think it will help sell a few more records?

Remind me again, why are Queen allowed to perform? This is the same Queen who broke the cultural boycott, took the money and performed at Sun City during the apartheid era? FFS

Well I did say I sympathise with the moans about celebrities, but felt less negative about the Sugarbabes if it raised some awareness. I didn't watch and didn't even know Queen played.

Oh Christ here we go again.

It's about "MONEY" how many more Times

This was a "Charity Do" organised for his "AIDS Foundation"

The Birthday Bit is just an excuse to collect Money

They will not collect as much with Afro Music perhaps.

Still, in the bestest possible taste, young Amy (ah, bless her...) used the stage to plead for the release of her Blake, languishing in a British jail....  you can see the connection, can't you? Nelson spends 25 years in jail for fighting apartheid, while Blake... oh, fuck it... there is no connection at all... unless you count the fact that Nelson had a mad woman on the outside....  Wink  Wink

Be grateful that she didn't try to climb into the audience and lamp Nelson.

Do you think in 20 years we'll laugh about Winehouse being there the same way we'll laugh at Banarama being included in the "Band Aid" song?

Well George Bush has taken Mandela off the terrorist list as a 90 year old birthday present. The ANC, Mandela's party apparently was listed in the African terrorist group ny the U.N.
