Podium Picks with HindsightSee they are doing something similar, elsewhere.
Thought it might be an idea to "compare notes".
No particular order, just pick your three for the podium.
No guessing after Wednesday's stage!
I'll wait and be anonymous.

as said on sunday's topic:
Bert from Andy Schleck from Wiggo.

Contador

Wiggo
Much as it is just now. I'd expect wiggo to drop some time on one mountain stage or other but to haul it back in the TT. Andy Schleck loses out because of the TT

1. Contador

3. Andy Schleck
Very close for second, but Klodi looks rock solid and has 40km to make mincemeat of Andy in the TT.

Ten bucks says Andy Schleck will blow up and lose three to four minutes in the near future. He may not even be the first Schleck on final GC.

Yeah, I've been wondering whether that might happen too. Frank S. didn't look too bad on the Verbier stage.
He even claimed afterwards that he didn't give it full speed when he broke to go after Alberto and Andy (after Nibali and Wiggins came up to him, he slowed down as he didn't want to pull them up). Or so he said.
But I guess his problem will be that he still has to ride for Andy during the coming days, including maybe an attak from far out to upset the Astana tactics. And that will cost him a lot of effort.
I see Carlos now claims he is no longer riding for the podium, but only to win Ventoux. Or so he says. If it's true, it's a little sad. I've always considered him a fighter till the end.... Hopefully it's a smokescreen.
I'm thinking Contador, Nibali as a slight surprise, and then hoping for Andy.

Contador, Wiggins, Armstrong....Schleck will lose another 2 minutes to Armstrong and Wiggins in the ITT and then come up short in his bid for the podium on Ventoux.

Just came across this thread by accident.
Funny how a week before the end, when many of us complained that nothing happened much, most of us still could not get even the names, much less the order of the top three right.
I guess even in this Tour, the Tour of some degree of dullness, there was uncertainty. Otherwise more of us would have got it close to right.

Agreed, primarily second and third places. They were all over the place into the third week, that was a positive but the route didn't do any major favours. After Arcalis nothing short of injury or inter team sabotage was going to stop Berto, that was confirmed at Verbier, then as the week continued Andy Scheck solidified his runner up spot, it was all left to the bottom step. Two boring weeks and a blinder of a third does not make a great tour in my opinion

Bartali

I wouldn't even say a blinder of a third week. The Tour was all about the Ventoux and it was a damp squib - the race was decided at Verbier and the ITT. Two days three at most.
Worst TdF parcours I can remember and there have been a lot of bad ones IMO.

I do agree with both of you, and more with Bartali about the third week being a bit damp, and Ventoux being a total bust for racing. sorry I missed being there, and had to watching the hospital. But it really was not a very good Tour at all, in many racing respects. But there was a bit of uncertainty, Wiggins too, would he do really really well or just really well. the internal drama in Astana was still a good story.

Only the excitement of having Lance back saved the tour. He's the most talked about rider on this forum.
|
Bartali
|
Alternatively, I think many on this forum would argue that without Lance being back we would have had a far more exciting Tour parcours (and Giro for that matter).
Lance is good for Lance and certainly a talking point for many. But I still struggle to see how he is good for cycling or the TdF pe se.
