Good hard stage this.  I think they'll be back together though for the sprint...
gerry12ie

And not only a good day's racing, but the dream commentary team of Hatch and Kelly  Razz
Nolte

Good watching. They did come bring back the time slightly towards the end but good days racing

Was out for lunch again.
Well, that wasn't the average, flat sprint stage.
When the wind blows, Paris-Nice always delivers.

Bardet disqualified for a lot of moto assist to rejoin his group.
Or maybe he was dqf'd for dropping Bertie on a 600 metre drag.

I missed some of the race, but it seems Romain Bardet has been kicked off the race for following cars on his way back after a fall.  He certainly did that, I saw him.  I also saw two others following him back through the cars.  Maybe they got busted too, it was only a small item on the bottom of the TV screen.  I didn't know they were cracking down on this, I thought it was cycle paths and trottoirs they were opposed to.  But they have set a dangerous precedent, as TV shots will always show riders going back through the cars.  I do hope they tell them how t make sure they don't "follow" the cars and which side they should be on when the wind blows.  I thought it was OK, if strictly illegal.  Should make the rules is "rules is rules people" amongst you happy.  Not me though, I picked him for my PN team!

In case you wondered, L'Equipe ranks the riders as follows.
five stars  Porte, Contador
four  Bardet, Henao, Zakarin
three Alphilippe, Gallopin
two Ulissi, D. Martin, Kruiswijk, J. Izaguirre
one T. Martin, Barguil, Fuglesang, S. Yates, Latour

Already this appears to be in interesting race. I think we will love it.

EDIT  Turns out he was caught actually hanging on to his team car, which is definitely naughty.  So it is still semi-legal to ride back through the cars, taking a wee tow now and again....... that's good.  I always feel sorry for any  GC rider who has a fall close to the line.

The curse of my fps strike again Sad
I was surprised that he did regain the second chasing back with no team mates to help. Maybe that explains how he did so.

Alaphillipe looking pretty strong.  I guess "we" are all waiting to see if he of the quality of Sagan, or in the next rung.

I thought, and many people thought it would be a mass sprint, but the roads were littered with sprinters who could not keep up.  Bravo to Demare, he too seems to be on a quite high level, but still not quite on the topmost level.  Maybe Demare, with his shining white teeth and smile, IS the real deal.
mazda

I know what you mean.
Strictly speaking nobody is on the same rung as Sagan.
But, to me, with a slightly different set of strenghts, Alaphilippe has already proved himself good enough to win this kind of week long race, especially if you give him a decent head start.
He's also the most likely to go and mop-up more bonus seconds if he feels he needs them.
Nolte

Demare was very strong today, getting back to alaphillippe and working through. Impressive performance.

The pace of the day as a whole did it for the other sprinters.

Another day of carnage on the Race to the Sun, more rain, snow and wind and echelons from very early on, Contador's group a minute plus back, Richie Porte over 5 minutes back....... fantastic!

Early season North European racing.... Just Brilliant!
gerry12ie

One especially for FF...

Quote:
News is that Nacer Bouhanni has climbed off. He's the third today after Bonifazio and Bouet.

Very Happy

Well, it would have been, if we had been able to see it.
As it was, we had to make do with Phil Gil trying to hold the bunch off into a headwind.
Awful coverage. France tv must be broke.
Sonny Cobrelli taking the top sprinting honour in this field was impressive.
"Bruiser" Bouhanni iis a flake.
gerry12ie

I have Colbrelli in my Velogames team  Wink

I also had Bouhanni  Laughing

Mine?
Bardet, Bouhanni and Bonifazio. Embarassed
Porte too.
So, I've already lost all interest.
Nolte

not been a good race for riders with B's at start of their surnames

as well as bardet, bouhanni and bonifazio, also retired are buchman, bono and bouet. 6 of the 9 retirees so far begin with b.

there is a 10 second clip of bardet's tow on http://www.stickybottle.com/lates...disqualified-from-paris-nice-for/

yes, the highlights for eurosport showed the last 25 or so km but that wasn't where the action was.

Croikey mate, Dickie Doors dropped nearly 15 minutes yesterday.

How to get destroyed by echelons 101, watched some of the early stuff online last night - CARNAGE!! That big group did amazingly well to pull it back

Porte's group had it well managed at about 5mins for most of the stage, then lost a further 10mins in the short final circuit. Weird.

Alaphilippe pulls out a worldy TT display.. 1min advantage on most of the "real" climbers, gonna be interesting for the weekend Smile
Nolte

So they both had time trials on Wednesday, now on the same day, they not have mountain top finish.

If I was a teacher, I'd say someone was copying someone else's work

Oh well, can't complain.
Biosphere

Yes, but today they timed it nicely to watch one and then the other. Sky bossing the front of the peloton with 12km to go.
Biosphere

The size of the Tag Heuer logo is just too big. Hadn't realised till now that Assos were the jersey supplier. Porte takes the stage, and D Martin nicks 3rd in the last 5m.
Nolte

Henao
Martin @ 30 seconds
Contador at 31 seconds
Gorka izaguirre at 1 minute
Allaphillippe at 1'22

A valuable snatch of third on the stage for dan
Fontfroide

Just caught up with the stage.  While Pierre Latour got the worst result possible for FPers like me, seventh, it is rather impressive who he beat up that  hill.  The question for all French supporters is whether he is the real deal, or just a flash in the pan, capable of something now and again.  He is a bit young, so no pressure.  But he beat Zakarin, Nieve, Izagarri, Barguil, Simon Yates etc.  Probably one should not read too much into this, but It was moderately impressive nonetheless.

Still remember him riding up that climb cut into the side of a big hill, going on forever, fowling Quintana and Contador with no apparent difficulty.
HuwB

A bit of a war of attrition that.
Porte completes one of the least fearless doubles possible for me, today.
He did look by far the most comfortable though.
Could be a real threat come, Le Tour, if he can avoid his usual, multi-disaster in the final kms.
Can Henao still snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, when Contador goes on another final day, kamikaze attack?

Just about!!! Contador now with nearly as many moral victories as legitimate ones. Great finish to a great edition of a race that had a bit for everyone - and you can't ask too much more of a bike race than that...
Nolte

Yes it has been a great edition of the race.
HuwB

That was even more exciting and unpredictable than last year's stage.
Incredible viewing.
Bahrain now facing the wrath that was reserved for Tony Gallopin, last year.
Chapeau Contador for making the race so thrilling, but oh those fans of yours.......
Fontfroide

That was a pleasure to watch, although I did miss a lot of it, and had to watch re-runs, which I don't like.  Still, seem to be a lot quite fine riders around.  The season promises a lot.  I do like watching the young lads coming through, especially if I have never h heard of them before, like the Spanish climber called .....

I might also add that I like that there is so much to look at for a French supporter that it is a massive pleasure.  Makes FPS easier too.  When in doubt pick a French rider, AND they might actually win.
