It takes 7 weeks for the drugs to work? I would have thought they kick in a lot quicker!
Get the Cyclists training bible if you want a serious book on training without any hype. It is easy to understand and is aimed at all levels.

I have this too.. some basics in here... altho i must admit i read it first just before i started to ride seriously in mountainous wales, and so the descending tips were duly noted.
Its stuff regurgitated in a lot of the same style books... and the performance plan itself is little more than common sense, and a introduction to using a training diary.
I'd say its good for a beginner, but a more observant cyclist, could use the principles carmichael lays out, to make a more specific training plan over a 2 month period to suit their needs, with greater accuracy.

I've seen this book and it was hard to keep track of all the jokes/jabs/stick that came to mind.
If you want something that actually works, try Joel Friel's Cyclist Training Bible. It will actually give you an idea of how to train/plan/set goals, etc.
I use a power meter for training and found Andy Coggan & Hunter Allens "training & racing with a power meter" to be invaluable.
