#48 is quite interesting.
Highest speed was back in 1979 and also sub 40kmh.
I'm not too up on my facts about average speeds but isn't the tour always 40+ (and geting faster every year). Defintely averages around 46-47 kmh in the first week every year. Ridiculously fast in anybody's book.

I guess that would be a contribution to the harder climbing everybody talks about with the Giro over the Tour.

I think so. There are generally a lot more flat sprinters stages in the TdF.
