Oscar Freire and Julian Dean Shot!I kid you not.
Oscar Freire and Julian Dean have been hit during Tdf Stage 13 by an air gun.
Juan Manual Garate heard 3 shots, and suddenly Freire was screaming in pain. He had been hit right above the knee. Julian Dean has been hit in his hand.
The incident happened at 165km after the start of the 13th stage. Rabo team doctor Dion Van Bommel had to remove a metal ball in Freire's upper leg after the stage. Apart from that, he is fine.
Truly unbelievable. Lunatic/s. Look the culprit/s up and throw away the key.

Unbelievable.
I can't believe LA would have these two shot. Surely they weren't a serious threat to him?

If the ridders were targeted, and if the targets were hit, I would look for a Columbia job myself. But most likely it was a backwoods guy with a gun. There are millions of them in France. Problably was not aiming at anyone.
This is ridiculous. Why do I even believe it? Actually it is believable, but do we have a good source. Where did you get this Huw?

It's all over the net. Team doctor carried out an op on Freire.

For once source.

For another.
Worse yet.
Nick Roche was thought to have been shot, with an air gun, at the "Ville Depart" rider's enclosure, a day or two ago, but the UCI said an ice making machine had exploded......

This is always something I've been concerned about but never voiced it. What can they do - wear body armour.
F'ing nutters out there and I'm surprised it's never happened before.
Saw OF being interviewed afterwards - fortunately he seems OK and I hoepe he can continue.
There are some seriously f'd up freaks out there. Sickening, truly sickening.

What sort of moron would do something like that? It just appears to have been random shooting at the riders - I can't think of any reason why Freire and Dean should be targetted, unless it was someon with a psychopathic hatred of sprinters, in which case, Cav in his green jersey would have been a much easier target. I hope they catch whoever was responsible.

BG is on holiday, does she have an alibi, I'm betting she was shooting at Lance and missed.

I heard a statistic some years ago that 5,000 chasseurs (hunters) are killed every year by other hunters. The figure sounds a bit high but as they are all rat-arsed after lunch could be possible. They are now obliged to wear high-visibility orange waistcoats while hunting. Last year there was an accident involving someone picking mushrooms!
Since 1st January cyclotourists are legally obliged to wear high-visibility yellow waistcoats in foggy conditions. I haven't heard of any accidents but it's only a matter of time.
The TdF is rather obvious but they let some complete nutters carry guns here, not just 12-bore shotguns like the UK but guns to kill deer and wild boar.

On cyclingnews I found the story below the more eye-catching headlines "NRC heads to Idaho" and "Gerdemann unsuccessful after bold move".

I got hit yesterday while riding. I had a yellow jacket hit my knee while I was traveling about 25mph. The sucker stung me and wouldn't get off until I knocked her off. It still hurts a bit today.

Evans had a promotional structure fall on his head, wish I could have seen it.

Given that all the victims have been sprinters the obvious conclusion is that it is a mentally deranged Frodo fan and there are plenty of them around
If I were Thor or Farrar I'd be bricking it.
In someways it is probably lucky that it was the rider that was hit not the tire. A blow out on a descent in the rain could have been very nasty.

Given that they are sprinters, you would have thought they could have sprinted out of the way to dodge the bullets
The culprit could have been someone on a "grassy knoll"

I was hit by one last Thursday night in the face and I almost crashed. BAM! But no sting. Amazing how hard those little things feel when you're going fast, too.

Apparently two teenage boys have been arrested for the shooting incident.

Oh, that's alright then is it? I want to see what will happen if I shoot you in the eye at point blank range - now remember afterwards, it's just "boys being boys"
