Some non-news about the Vuelta route. The Nationalist parties in the Basque paliament have turned down a tentative suggestion that there should be a stage of the 2009 Vuelta in the Basque Country (which hasn't happened for many years because of security problems). The Parties turned down the idea because 'The Basque country isn't part of Spain'..These same political parties have applied to have a stage of the 2013 Tour de France in Bilbao.

I read that, too.
Come Wednesday and we'll have the third route of three. Hope it's not a Kelly third route.

Some real news about the Vuelta route at last:
A summary from As.com
Los detalles
Contrarreloj. Habrá tres: Assen (1ª etapa, 5 km), Valencia (7ª, 35 km) y Toledo (20ª, 30 km).
Five mountain top finishes - 1st paragraph above. They are not going to the Pyrenees or the Asturian mountians this year. Three of the mountain finishes will be on consecutive days. There will also be two more mountain stages.
Three short time trials, none longer than 35km, one is in Valencia and the decisive one in Toledo
The Vuelta will start in Holland with three stages there and then one in Belgium ( ). It looks like the closest it will get to my necck of the woods is Almería.
It will only be the second time the Vuelta has started outside of Sapin. The first time was in Portugal.
There will be 20 or 21 teams to be announced later. All must have the biological passports.

Four and a half Mountaintops, I'd say.
Cati may be known as the "Wall", but it's more like a giant Muy de Huy, than an altitude jaunt.
I like the climb, though.
Are they finishing atop, or doing the usual Eladio Jimenez rundown?
This means Harmon will have to be reminded of O'Grady, Friere and Zabel's breakaway, again. (not by me!)
What's that about tv coverage? Don't like the sound of that.

no I don't like the sound of the TV coverage either Weekends only??? Will see if I can find out more.
There are five mountain finishes plus two more mountain stages, so I assme all five will finish at the top.

Stage 11
I think I can safely say I will be in Caravaca that day.
I see Avila gets a stage finish this year

Seems they have beefed up this edition. Some speculation it's the best in years. Very little ITTing, so no chance of an Armstrong treble!

IMO, only two things wrong. Light last week again....could get dull and that tv issue.
Will it be TVE playing silly buggers again, or is this what to expect from Antenna? in the future? Cycling. tv will have a revenue issue, as this is a seperate little earner for them.

I think next years route is, probably, the most exciting and interesting in years.
There is (in spain) this stupid argument about the route, with things like, if it´s called the Vuelta a España, why does start in Holland? and crap like that, also many people think that becouse there aren´t any stages in the Pyrenees and Asturias (Angliru) the route is crap, etc...
but I am sure it will be wonderfull to watch

As Basque that I am, that decision is totally bullshit, I don´t understand in any way, how these fucking snobs (politicians) have to decide anything to do with cycling.
Cycling supporters in the Basque Area, and there are many, are dying to have a mayor cycling event (apart from the Tour of The Basque Country etc...) like a stage of the Tour, Vuelta, or the world champs, track or route.
The only reason why they did come up with such childish excuse for not having the Vuelta through basque roads, is because the idea came from the Partido Popular (PP) which is the Ultra Right wing party of Spain.
Conclusion, Politicians Sucks!

Haven't we heard about interesting and exciting Vueltas for a while now?? Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the last couple Vueltas. The last week of 07 was a good one as far as I recall......then I do like Sastre. I always hope the Vuelta will be a cracking race so it gets some deserved respect, but then they gotta make it happen.!!

That was my first thought again this year as well. But stage 19 has a cat 1 climb just before the finish and stage 18 finishes in Avila so there will be a bit more to spice it up next year.
Also nice to see la Pandera again. Valverde's win there in 2003 was one of my most memorable Vuelta moments of this decade. He came out of nowhere to catch Heras and Cardenas in the last km or so. The look on Roberto's face was priceless when Piti unexpectedly overtook him.

Time to move on ... this looks like it could be the best GT of the year. Is Bertie riding? Sastre? Basso we know is riding.

Well, I shall be in Caravaca de la Cruz (stage 11), to see them go through and then the finish (it's 20km from where I live). I'm trying to work out what other stages I would like to see. I would love to go to Avila, but that might be complicated, as I'm going to a friend's 'special' birthday party that week. I will have to get organised!

Xorret del Catí is short and sharp, just under 4km but just over 11%. Eladio Jimenez won there in 2004 and 2000. The latter also also notable because it was the stage where Cipo gave someone a whack & was expelled from the race.
The only mountain stage were Basso would look to be vulnerable, the other four MTFs play to his advantage.
Couple of time trials, one a pan-flat 30km effort which finishes at the Valencia race track. Toledo is 25km and 'suited to the specilists', so pretty flat.
