Beer, lots of it most likely a porter!
sheeponabike

Hey Bergar, that sounds too sensible to me!

Agent Futura, you mean you can buy Porter in the states?
I'm a northern Englishman - ever drunk Jubilee Stout?
Sooty

It's cider for me. 500 years plus Wiltshire ancestry, hardly surprising really.
And then I had a curry.... lovely!
Oddly there's a prog on TV at present about cider making - apparently it's been drunk in Britain for 2000 years plus.
Slapshot

I know, but I'm knackered!!!
tommie81

Got to be at work at 6 tommorrow morning (up at 5:15), so it there will be no alcohol for me. Tommorrow night I might have one or two either bok beers (darker beers that are available here at this time of year) and otherwise a trappiste or duvel.
sheeponabike

Bergar, why are you Knackered?
Do you race?

So Sooty You're a cider man......cheers!
Would that be scrumpy?
Slapshot

I wish!!!!!

To busy at work this week!!!!

Tommie81

Trappiste - that's Belgian stuff isn't it?
Had some once

See, too busy hating us stupid americans to realize just how far we have come! Wink

On second thought, a stout sounds good...I'll make it an Oatmeal

This is the place....

http://www.bristolbrewing.com/our_beers.asp?brs_id=11

buy it in growlers for take home drinking pleasure!

Never had Jubilee Stout. This is what's available in Colorado...Samuel Smith's, Bass, Guiness...that what I can think of now
sheeponabike

Hey Futura YOU HAVE BASS!! That's my local brew! Made in Burton-on-Trent just near where I come from. THE BEST BEER IN THE WORLD.
tommie81

sheeponabike:

Yep, thats the stuff. Normally between 6 and 9%, so its not something you down in one go. But the beer should be enjoyed.

La Chouffe is also a VERY nice beer, if you ever get the chance to try that, do (providing your into special beers, otherwise don't: we don't want it wasted!)
sheeponabike

Yeah it's strong stuff, but i'm English so i'm used to drinking 10 without falling over, so I need something less strong.

Are you Dutch or English ex pat?

BASS is a damn good beer but I have to give "Props" to my locals....in America, particularly in Colorado, Craft brewing has exploded and there are some great US beers, stouts, porters, amber ales, IPAs the list goes on..... You would be surprised
sheeponabike

Well, as long as it's better than Budweiser.......

Neither. My mums Dutch, my dads English. I lived with my parents in Britain until I was 16 and then I moved to the Netherlands. I consider myself more Dutch than English though. Speak both languages fluently, have two passports (though haven't used my British one for ages).

The american or the Czech?????

The Czech is quite good...
sheeponabike

My kids have British and French passports, although the French don't like this. They think you should decide your nationality at 18 and keep it like that. WTF who cares about authority? When I contacted the British embassy about it they weren't bothered either way.

Isn't Holland a bit crowded these days? Would love to visit Amsterdam one day though.
sheeponabike

Bergar, I was in Austria this year and saw original Bud on the shelves and thought it was Austrian....so it's Czech then?

I was refering to the American version which is worse than horse piss.
tommie81

I think the Dutch are trying to tighten the laws on dual nationality as well, after a bit of trouble with children from Moroccan and Turkish immigrants with dual nationality. But as you say, neither side is relly bothered. If I had to choose I'd probably drop my British nationality as I'm living and settled here.

Holland is in places crowded, especially the Randstad (Utrecht-Amsterdam-Leiden-Den Haag-Rotterdam) The north and east though are okay though. the advantage about it is that you can get everywhere on public transport!

Well, going to call it a night now. Some people have to be up early tomorrow.....
Slapshot

Yes, it is Czech!

What about Franciscaner? (spelled wrong probably)

Come to Kent and have some Biddenden- excellent stuff
bianchigirl

sheep, where in France are you? Used to live near Saumur.

mine's a half price bottle of cava from Sainsbury's (handily situated at the bottom of the road) - but a sauvignon blanc, sancerre rose, campari soda, G&T or good bloody mary all hit the spot....
crash48

bergaretxebe

What about Spanish cider. Love that stuff.

Pour if from the roof with the glass on the floor!

I get it from a stand at the Portobello market.
Slapshot

he he he!!!

very nice indeed!!!! it is very tipical from Asturias or the Basque Country.

There are special restaurants called "sidrerias" where you can only drink cider, they have a huge barrel and you can drink as much as you like......
crash48

I have been in many cider houses where you have a whole chicken and all the cider you can drink.

I try and pour it the correct way at home when friends come over, but I waste a fair bit.

I had to come back to this one. Talk about sterotyping! We Yanks eat Big Macs too, everyday!!!!

Budweiser sucks and we Americans aren't as homogenized as you think! I'm not starting a cyber brawl over beer because I'd never pass up a Sammy Smith's Winter Wecome Ale but as a betting man like Marador (or whoever) I could line up some American beer that would put you cats under the table! 785 Micro and Craft breweries in the U.S. and they ain't serving up pilsner!

I'm drinking a Fat Tire 1554 right now and I have 5 more to go. In a blind taste test I bet you would pick the 1554 over Guiness hands down. I've had both so I know!

You will know too because when you all wake up you'll notice how my posts have digressed in complete nonsense! Smile
naspa

Budvar is the Czech beer. Likewise, Pilsner is from from the town of Pilsner which is also in the Czech Republic.

There was controversy after 1989 when East European beers started to be marketted in the West. Budvar predated Budweiser and there was a row about who had the rights to the name.

Sadly the Czech brewery was bought up by Budweiser. IMO the quality of it has gone down since then. Most of the breweries are now owned by mulinationals Sad

I am not sure why but I can drink far more beer in Eastern Europe without getting a headache or feeling shit in the morning.

Favourite beers: Ursus, Ciuc, Silva, Timişoreana (Romanian), Żywiec (Poland), and Skopsko (Macedonia).
caligirl147

I'm not a connoiseur of alcoholic drinks, but I've had some tasty sips in my lifetime...

Toohey's New, Coopers Pale Ale, Leffe Blonde, and plain old Fat TIre for beer type drinks;
a nice Shiraz does well for wine;
Drambuie in a flask on a cold winter's eve has never let me down;
and silver agave tequila neat is a thing of mystery and beauty.

But when I'm really effing thirsty, just give me lots and lots of water!

Hi people, anybody got a hangover?

Went to pick-up a traylor load of wood this morning, and my mate was hung over too. He hit the Tequila last night.

I kind of like it here in the Coffe Lounge, even if it's spelt wrongly. Infact it should be left like that - makes easier to cope with somehow.
naspa

A Chetnik breakfast?
sheeponabike

Oh Christ, what's that?
naspa

A large shot of Slivovitz.

Mind you a friend of mine told me that someone (an Albanian) told him that the way to cure a cold was to snort rakija - which he did. He said his eyeballs near fell out!
sheeponabike

Well I don't know what Rakija is, but maybe it wouldn't be a good idea at the moment.

Hey come on Naspa, was there really a band called Sheep on Drugs? Rapid that...
naspa

Raikja is grape brandy. Normally home distilled.

Sheep on Drugs - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheep_on_Drugs

late to this thread but when I visited your fair land, I was APPALLED to see what was being charged for that swill Shocked . In fact the reason the brewery has so many Clydesdale horses is not to pull their advertising wagons, but rather to fill the beer bottles it foists on an unsuspecting public.

AND AF -- That Stone's Vertical Epic Ale was pretty damn good Wink

plenty of great beers from the states, more than bud and Colorado Kool-Aid (otherwise known as coors light).

These folks love there beer though....that is for sure!

I loved Beamish Black when I visited in 2000 but when I came back in 04 I couldn't find it anywhere. I definitely need to do not a choir tour of the UK but a beer drinking tour.

Plus I need to add cider to my repetoire.....

Oranjeboom?!?! Shocked That stuff is foul, just like it Dommelsch! (coincidently, both are owned by interbrew)
bbnaz

I think I will need a beer guide before I come there again. I was quite confused by the apparent (NOTE WORD APPARENT) lack of beer choices. Saw a lot of the same things, which I guess happens here but at least here one can go to a pub that specializes in many different beers....is that possible there? Even in Wales the choices were slim to none....

Help out a fellow beer lover will ya?
CapeRoadie

Oban single malt whiskey.
badbrains

Yes you are correct agent futura!
they have one of the best band names ever and also happen to to be one of the best US punk bands ever along with the new york dolls and iggy and the stooges.

Believe me there is. If you're going to drink a Dutch pilsner, Don't drink Oranjeboom or Dommelsch. The rest, Hein... (fuck it, I'm not going to list them all) are okay. Well, Bavaria isn't brilliant either, but anyway. Hertog Jan is probably the best though.

Single malts, the older the better, primarily Island and Highlands malts though the odd lowland or speyside hits the mark

Good red wines and ports go down rather well

beers well. Can't get it here but Detmolder Pils. When we lived in Germany it was the daily refreshment. Veltins okay
Some of the Belgy stuff as well Duvels is amazing, leffe blond, locval french beers are okay as well.
In the Uk though don't drink bitter unless it's good yorkshire bitter, Theakstones Best, Black Sheep
Scottish mass maketed Lager (light beer for our foreign readers) is crap don't touch it however if you ever venture to Orkney have a go at the Skullsplitter 11% by volume best hangover I ever had....
Morstar

Can't beat the whisky trail as long as you're not driving!

Anybody drink Jaegermeister? I hear it has quite the kick.

I prefer good wines, craft beers (ales in particular) and a really good single malt scotch.

There are plenty of great tequilas but that is another ball of wax entirely.

I find that I can ride my bike most effectively before any of these libations and the ale makes for quite the capper after a desert ride.

Only when I have to, generally to teach the whippersnapper I coach how to drink Wink

I used to, with the lemon juice and salt on the back of the hand, everything, but I got destroyed so often I just couldn't take it any more.

tequila hey?

It is funny how when I have drunk tequila, I have either been arrested, lost 16 hours, or have thrown up in my mates Parents bedroom...with them in it.

Mind you that is some time ago.
Sooty

This will make you laugh.... despite being a a very modest rider in my day, I was teetotal! (And I stayed that way until life became rather more difficult in my thirties....)
And now? Well, I sometimes have the odd bottle of West Country cider - oddly about the only alcohol which doesn't disagree with me - probably my centuries old Wiltshire ancestry. Did you know that my aglab forbears would probably have drunk cider midday, every day, and toiled on through the afternoon..... In many parts of London and the industrial North men commonly drank massive amounts of beer throughout the working day - rather than drink possibly diseased water.
Yes, I know I'm a bit sad....

Got a Departmental party on thursday. Bring a bottle from your region of study. Normally a competition to see who can bring the substance with the highest proof-rating.

Someone brought something made from brambles last time and there was also some stuff that looked like tar from Latvia.

Normally degenerates fairly quickly.
sheeponabike

I like evenings that degenerate quickly.

Made from brambles WTF was that?
naspa

Dunno, it looked like a urine sample. It tasted pretty foul. It was Norwegian. But then some of the stuff the Russianists bring back is equally evil.

Things in unmarked bottles and anything that is described as 'something I bought from a kiosk in...' normally means bad news.

At the last party our DA forgot how to walk.
sheeponabike

Did it steam when it was poured?
I remember trying to distil some rotten wine one night with some mates, using a pressure cooker and plastic tubing coiled through cold water. It turned out kind of milky colour, because as we found out later, we should have passed it through at least 3 times instead of once as we did. Could've sent us blind or something.
