Noisy freehubI just had a new wheelset built for my "good" bike. DT RR 1.1 rims, DT competition spokes, Hope Pro III hubs. Very nice wheels, light, look great, very stiff. I'm a bit disconcerted, though, by the fact that the Hope freehub is so noisy. There's nothing wrong with it - I understand that Hope hubs are notorious for being noisy, and some people like it. But I've been used to silent freehubs and I'm having trouble getting used to it. Any of you mechanics got any tips on quietening a freehub?

Re-lubing the pawls with a light oil would be my guess. Too heavy a grease job and they'll likely be even noisier and could even be dangerous. Make sure the springs or pawls don't need replacing...make sure your cassette is in good shape...
But let me ask you: why do you think that a noisy freehub is a bad thing? It's a GOOD thing, if you ask me.
Love the noise, chasm, love the noise... with pride!

Yes, I know, some people like it. Maybe it just spoils my fantasy self-image of the silent assassin. I daresay I'll get used to it in time.

Sorry 'Silent Assassin', but I am told by the people over on 'weight weenies' that Hope Pro hubs are just about the loudest on the market!

I've heard that about Hope hubs as well.

That is certainly my experience. I haven't heard anything like it since I was 10 and wedged a lollipop stick so that it got flicked by the spokes. Still, I suppose the illusion that I'm being pursued by a swarm of bees might make me go faster. And my wheel-builder assures me that the Hope hubs are excellent, and serviceable.

I wonder if my neighbor had Hope hubs. This explains a lot if he does. He has the loudest free wheel I've ever heard.

Why buy Hope if you want quiet?

Foolishly, I didn't ask about noise when discussing my spec with the wheel builder. Still, as I say, they're beautiful wheels and I'll get used to it. But it's worth others knowing about Hope hubs. Good product, but not in any way self-effacing!

Chasm,
Don't worry you're not the only one with noisy hubs. Mine makes the loudest wheezing sound every time I hit any kind of hill. Weird...

chasm: good day sir. how are you?
wheelbuilder: hello. I'm just great and how are you?
c: ok I guess, btw do you not hear that heart beating sound?
w: excuse me but I don't hear a heart beating sound.
c: oh I get it, you're one of them. Anyways I want a wheelset built.
w: sure I can build anything you like. What did you have in mind?
c: oh I'll leave it up to you. You really can't hear that beating sound?
w: no sir. but I think I can build a wheelset to solve all your problems.
c: damn beating sure is irritating. btw what problems are you talking about.
w: oh nothing. leave it with me. "hope the wheelset hubs you the right way" it's a pun.
c: oh yes ha ha. btw I hope hubs aren't so shiny as to be noticable.
w: guarantee for you, hope hub shine won't be what you'll notice. good day.
c: good day and you should do sometning about that damn noise.
w: oh I wheel.

Strangely enough my Campag hubs have gone silent...although that's the least of my worries in the hub area I fear the worse!
