New HelmetI'm in the process of looking for a new road helmet to replace my old one (a Trek MTB helmet ). Remember that cost is an important factor, but not the only one....

What's the deal with the Atmos, weight, comfort, flashy colours?

That's why I'm leaning toward the Ghisallo. With Giro, you're paying $30-$40 just for the name.

I like Giro - always ridden with them. The Atmos is pretty light and very comfortable. Lots of vents so very cool. Don't know about flashy colours? You can get lots of LA special editions, but mine is plain black.

I'd jump on that, but I'm probably a large....

Id even look at a Giro Pneumo. I had one for 4 years and it was also excellent.
Lots of vents. Fit is fantsastic. Adjustibility is excellent. I took a big fall and it worked perfectly. I think the Giro products are without peer in the lid game.

Also mine. Had to use my REI Dividend to afford it in 2005, though.

I should add this into the mix as well:
Specialized Decibel ($85) Link

I understand the venting and the coolness factor, but don't they all have to be ASTM (or whatever the standard is) rated? Obviously you don't want a clunker so is it the lightness/cooling factor or what drives the choice?
|
CapeRoadie

Yup, bb. Lightness, ventilation and coolness (as in "that's fu**ing "cool").
|
forza_petacchi

The coolness factor is very important....I need a blue helmet to go with my jerseys

I miss the days of the old "campagnolo" painter caps....Those said "serious cyclist"....

I hate helmets, but have been forced to buy one because some of the sportives I want to do won't let me enter without one.
One of the reasons I hate them is that they're hot and uncomfortable. I therefore spent quite a while trying them on in large numbers. The Specialized decibel and the Giro atmos were easily the most comfortable and best ventilated. I went with the atmos. I continue to wear it only when I have no choice, however.

I don't know where you live, but here in NYC a helmet is absolutely indispensable. If it weren't for mine, I'd be dead several times over.

i love it there...you ride CP then or head out of town?

I've gotten sick of CP, especially this time of year when there are 5 million tourists who cross the road in front of you, so I do Piermont/Nyack most of the time.

I regularly ride in heavy traffic, and it isn't long since I used to commute by bike in London. We've had the debate in here before. I'm unconvinced that helmets make you safer. I realise I'm in the minority, but my head is still intact.

Thanks BB.
I had put this picture in my post but deleted the darn thing when it didn't work.
Anyhoo. My post relates to the fact that I've just realised in a few short weeks time my commute will involve regularly being assaulted by these babies! Time to reconsider my own helmet (or lack of) position.
As for the dog? Border collie maybe?

You're right there. London cabs, even in these degenerate days, have the lowest accident rate of any form of public transport in the UK.
Be that as it may, and despite my unreconstructed naturism when it comes to bare-headedness, I'd go for the Atmos or the Decibel, depending on which you find more appealing.

I once hit my head on a bike crash and my old Giro really did protect me. I've come to the conclusion that when it comes to helmets, cost should never be the deciding factor. Useablity and protection should be in the for front and the Giro helmets really do go over board on both. I highly recommend the Pnuemo or Atmos. I have both and they are wonderful helmets.
