Moving to Heidelberg, Germany!

Anybody ever been to this mid-evil town?

I've only visited a couple of times but really looking forward to moving there in 3 weeks(Mid April).

Looking forward to getting a new bike and tackling the roads behind that castle. [/img]

Nice to see you back Scott.

Heidelberg is a lovely place old and new wrapped into one, been there four or five times it was just on the edge of a nice weekend drive for us. A bit jealous of you we'd love to move back to Germany unfortunately the Job is in Scotland...

Spent some time in Heidelberg in the early nineties when doing the studenty European tour thing. stayed in the most bizarre B&B where we had the loft space (we were on a tight budget). Elderly lady who owned it had decorated the whole place with golden cherubs! Remember that at breakfast there was a serving hatch at floor level! always had visions of the midget from 'Don't look back' being down there. It was a bit disturbing.

On the plus side the City itself was beautiful, lovely walks up into the black forest. Also remember a bar that had 100 different types of beer! Steer clear of the 'Stark Brau' Ouch!

A strange thing happened while having dinner last night...The normally quaint and charming "altstadt" region of Heidelberg erupted with sounds of whistles and protesters marching and eventually running at police barricades... I just happened to be having dinner in a sidewalk restaurant and snapped this photo.

It seems students from the university here were protesting tuition hikes...I heard they have to pay 600 euros per semester now...They outta try getting a degree with that in the states...lol

Still not resolved? I saw loads of signs/stickers complaining against student tuition fees when I was working in Germany last summer. Seems to me it's one of those generational issues: when you're a student you think someone else should pay for your education, and when you're already paying taxes for every idiotic scheme your government dreams up, then you think the students should bloody well pay for themselves  Rolling Eyes

Wie geht's in Heidelberg?

Life is great in Heidelberg, apart from the mid-may temps in the single digits(C) and heavy doses of rain and drizzle.  The trade off is that everything is soooooo green and beautiful here and it makes you appreciate the few sunny days we get even more.

I love this place!

Sweet !!

I lived in the Odenwald...near Bensheim, just down the road from H.Berg (33km)

My village- right next to the Felsenmeer

Is Heidleberg more of wine town than beer? I could go for a crisp, bone dry, reisling.

Looks very hilly for cycling.

Heidelberg is a beautiful place. My wife often travels to Germany as she is an interpreter and has been to Heidelberg 4 times already this year. Her company pays for everything including her accommodation in Germany so shes gets a pretty cooshti deal! I went to visit her in August and would definitely recommend the Hackteufel Restaurant if you get a chance to go! Can't find an official link for them but theres information on this website. Very traditional German food and quite a cosy atmosphere so head there if you can!
