most disappointing gc rider so far?

i have to say roman kreuziger.
112th position.
1 hour and 55 mins behind voeckler!
really underachieving performance.
he should be in the top 10.
nicedommie

cancellara has been strangely muted. it will be interesting to see in the ITT if he is under the weather somehow.
Boogerd_Fan

but he won the young rider competition at the Giro and finished 8th.

I would say he's had a good year... last year he was winning 1-week stage races and keeping up in the mountains in GTs'.

This year he was active in Italy (his main goal of the season), and came to the Tour at the last minute to help Vino. The transition to basing his season around a GT and going for overall has just started. I still reckon he'll come good in a few years.

This is surely Roche's last season as team leader.  I can't see how he can continue to get armchair rides around races by not winning.  Gadret had a very good Giro and Peraud has done well in this tour but Nicolas is going backward at a rate of knots.

Wiggins!!!

Exactly !

Hard to disagree, sadly.... finishing behind Cavendish on a bumpy stage like yesterday really isn't on.... he's blaming his injury-hit season, I see, but it's difficult to see him "breaking through" now.... I suspect he'll be with a new team in 2012, but not sure where that'll be...  maybe Deignan will assume the mantle of top Irish GC rider...?
ullrichfan

It's obviously Gesink.
Bartali

Andy Schleck???

He looked pretty good closing that first gap on Contador yesterday.  I think he is just fine, but has a restricted brief for this Tour.  Help the lads.  And for a great champion, he is doing it pretty well, no moaning.

And yes, we will see what he does in the ITT.  He might get beaten by Martin, but if he is not the winner, I will be shocked.
Fontfroide

Pettachi (nothing much, did we think he would be that bad?)
Leipheimer (although I know he is intensely disliked on this forum),
Fuglsang (how often is he with the lads when it goes up)

Just to add to the list above, which I agree with too.

Good choice.  He has not been injured even.

A joke?  Crashes surely don't count.

but the crash at dauphine really upset his preparation for the tour.
looking at ag2r age wise, Roche was born in 1984, Gadret 1980 and Peraud 1977 and Dupont if 1980 so compared to them, Roche still has much more time

injuries seem to be roche's biggest problem
ullrichfan

Exactly FF.  I wouldn't have thought that Petacchi and Cancellera counted as GC riders either which is what the thread is entitled...

Just a slight play on words is how I took it.

Biggest disappointment for Wiggins, not disappointment with Wiggins.
Slapshot 3

Crybaby Schleck.....for all his whining yesterdqy
smarauder68

Gesink...used an early accident as an excuse to "mail-in" his TDF....if he's that hurt, he shouldn't be riding.

i think it looks like; gesink, andy schleck and kreuziger have all disappointed as gc contenders so far. badly.
Boogerd_Fan

Grarrrr.. Roman wasn't even in the Tour for the GC!

Gesink was unlucky, the way Rabo didn't pull him out and save him for the Vuelta is poor management in my view. Expecting him to make a recovery and then give it a go in the Alps is forgetting the fact that he is feeling quite brittle after that first week. Now it looks like he's not trying, i doubt thats the case.

Andy isn't dead and buried yet! He's could still win...
ullrichfan

Yeh, I'm not having Kreuziger as a poor performer either.  He raced a really tough Giro - look at how badly Gadret did in this year's TDF and compare!

Damn, my bad.  I didn't read it closely enough.  I am tired today.

Personally, I consider Andy Schleck to be hands down winner of this title, both on and off the road. Tactics and talk both suck.

However, if crash damage is factored in, I would say Gesink and the whole Radio Shack 4, are head and shoulders above the rest.
Bartali

Levi's still riding well though ... just as long as he's kicking Cunego's arse! Wink

Still think Andy deserves this title? Shocked

Good review of Nic Roche's book at Podium Cafe here http://www.podiumcafe.com/2012/1/...side-the-peloton-by-nicolas-roche that questions how to squeeze five career wins (2 of which are the Irish TT and RR) into 394 pages.  The review confirms that he doesn't have a TT bike, which is absurd for a supposed GT contender.  It's frustrating to think how many wins he might have had he not persevered with the rather prepostourous notion that he has a genuine GT chance, as he can sprint with all but the best, can climb decently, and is strong in a break.  FMK closes the review with this fairly accurate summary:

Quote:
It is a rather bland affair that doesn't really live up to its title and take the reader inside the peloton. It does, though, offer plenty of excuses for Roche's lack of success. Reading those excuses, I did begin to wonder if maybe the book should have actually been called Excuse: Me.

Also, I see Roche Snr has also has a book due next year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his season in the sun.  A brief synopsis might read:

Chapter 1 - Moans about how happy his childhood was

Chapter 2 - Moans about how hard it is in Paris

Chapter 3 - Moans about Kelly winning everything

Chaper 7 - Moans about Visentini, Italians and pasta

Chapter 9 - Moans about Delgado, Bernard and Systeme U

Chapter 10 - Moans about Kelly moaning about how Roche stole the Worlds

Chapters 11-19 - Moans about not getting the respect he deserves
CapeRoadie

Chaps 11-19 might have something to do with Paul Kimmage.  Which is a good thing.
